Actually Jinxing and Reverse Jinxing on forums work..Experienced Match Thead openers are always in demand. There's definitely some science behind it. I would request PK' date=' Professor and yourself to make a formal thesis on it...:icflove:[/quote'] :hmmm: you could be onto something here.. We could make some money off this. :cantstop:

Valid point. I wouldn't be too surprised if the initial judgment classifying astrology as a science was passed during the British era. Who on ICF is familiar with British laws or American laws? Can you tell us how astrology is classified there (if at all)?
Think it's a recent thing. There were some departments of Astrology opened in universities around 8-10 years back which was challenged in the courts and the courts ruled in favor of them. Can't believe tax payers are being made to cough up money for this crap. Being classified as a science also entitles the departments to special grants reserved only for scientific research. What a waste!

Firstly' date=' pseudo means "fake". So pseudo science cannot be a subset of the broader science family as you put it.[/quote'] I know. That was a :P comment. ICF told me that I had crossed my limit of smileys for the day. :P
Secondly, there is more truth to what Outy said than you think (regarding appeasement). There is a lot of faith in the hindu community regarding astrology, and they take it very seriously.
Lets not go down the religion/appeasement road. Let me ask people who are better placed than me to answer this question. After a long day at work, the last thing I want is to be to be told that Indian laws are defunct/ suboptimal. :P

Apparently' date=' the courts' definition of what consitututes 'Science' does not seem consistent with the common-sense definition of what can be called 'Science'. [/quote'] That shouldn't come as a surprise. The way a court understands 'murder' , 'provocation' and 'instigation' are also not a 100% consistent with the common-sense definition of those terms.

I agree with your (and Morris's) point on tax payers money being spent on astrology when it shouldn't be. But that is a totally different issue altogether. I'm not sure a University needs a subject to be classified as a science to grant funds. That will have to be checked up. Let me now put this question back to you, varun, Morris and PK. What about palm reading? Apparently the length of the lines on your hand can predict your life span, wealth etc. In this case it is easy to observe and correlate between the length of the specific line and the life span of an individual. If someone can show a high degree of correlation between the predicted and the real, will you classify this practice as a science?

I have a even more accurate way predicting how long a person will live: Its called measuring your waistline. :P All these astrogloy/palmistry/vaathu shaastra/pranic healing malarkey are quite clearly, fabricated out of thin air several centuries ago, at a time when subsistence farming, artisanship, builders etc were the only real job possibilities. People simply made stuff up to a)work on something other than those that are listed and b)make some money. Unfortunately, times have moved on and yet, we’re still saddled with these by-products of the medevial age.

Of those you mentioned, pranic healing and vastu shastra are useful sciences.

Well, there are several ways to first make such a claim. Lets take 2 lines: The Life line and the wealth line. At first glance, the observation could involve (This is obviously all purely theoretical lol) Observations Life Line: First, study the hands of 10,000 different corpses taken at random all over the world in mortuaries. Check the "life line" on their hands, and note down their life-span. I am not sure if the "life line" theory includes death by unnatural causes. In any case, that would need to be written down as well. Wealth Line: Check the hands of random 1000 millionaires, and 1000 random poor people and compare. After the claim has been made, and verified, then the correlation must be validated via experiments. Experimentations and Validation Life Line: Are you able to kill a person who has a long life line ? i.e. who isn't supposed to die ? Try killing a random sample of 1000 people who have a long life line, and the same correlation should hold as above :P Wealth Line:Try taking a random sample of 1000 poor people, and give them all a million dollars each. Check after a year, and see if they all go back to being poor :P If the above indeed again is validated, some other "scientists" could apply other rigorous tests to validate if the above "palm line"-"real life" correlation holds. Once, the above is proven, then people could start looking at the reason why the above correlation holds, and try to derive theories on why it holds. At this stage, it is possible that there is enough evidence, and theories to call it a science.

Jokes apart, I think that Vaibhav's got a point. I don't know what Pranic healing is, but if the name is anything to go by, it heals. If it really does heal, why shouldn't it be a science? That is a tangible & measurable outcome. What about homeopathy then? Science or not? What about Yunani medicine ( many many many Muslim people swear by Yunani medicine practices, don't think its that popular with the other communities)? Science or not? Morris, you just opened Pandora's box :((

Varun, you clearly know nothing about the science of Bollywood and the effect it has on people's lives. When you kill some who has a long lifeline, his life line automatically gets shortened before he dies. Thats the first axiom of Bollywood palmistry.

lol, I thought about including that in the observations, but didn't, because that would invalidate the purpose of the line (i.e. to predict)

homeopathy is a science. Old Hemeopathic Remedies like hypericum etc have very recently been proven by modern sciences to contain substances that work. many of the remedies have not been chemically proven how they work, but they do. A recent research by IIT bombay showed tht homeopathy effects can be explained thru nano-technology. Although, there would be several homeopathic remedies which work equivalent to placebo effect i.e. they do not work. But HOMEOPATHY IS WORTH A TRY

India has low divorce rates compared to the western world......that's a fact. Majority of the Indian marriages are based on Kundli matching......that's a fact. In other words kundli matching is effective in eliminating the number of divorces. Hence, it is effective and therefore it is SCIENCE. All you haters are brainwashed by western education and find everything Indian non-science.

Arabs have even lower divorce rates and they slaughter a cow at their wedding. Hence killing cows leads to better marriages.
