THE WTF news of the day thread

Not exactly news from today but worth a read nonetheless: China Bans Reincarnation Without Government Permission Source In one of history's more absurd acts of totalitarianism, China has banned Buddhist monks in Tibet from reincarnating without government permission. According to a statement issued by the State Administration for Religious Affairs, the law, which goes into effect next month and strictly stipulates the procedures by which one is to reincarnate, is "an important move to institutionalize management of reincarnation." But beyond the irony lies China's true motive: to cut off the influence of the Dalai Lama, Tibet's exiled spiritual and political leader, and to quell the region's Buddhist religious establishment more than 50 years after China invaded the small Himalayan country. By barring any Buddhist monk living outside China from seeking reincarnation, the law effectively gives Chinese authorities the power to choose the next Dalai Lama, whose soul, by tradition, is reborn as a new human to continue the work of relieving suffering. At 72, the Dalai Lama, who has lived in India since 1959, is beginning to plan his succession, saying that he refuses to be reborn in Tibet so long as it's under Chinese control. Assuming he's able to master the feat of controlling his rebirth, as Dalai Lamas supposedly have for the last 600 years, the situation is shaping up in which there could be two Dalai Lamas: one picked by the Chinese government, the other by Buddhist monks. "It will be a very hot issue," says Paul Harrison, a Buddhism scholar at Stanford. "The Dalai Lama has been the prime symbol of unity and national identity in Tibet, and so it's quite likely the battle for his incarnation will be a lot more important than the others."

 Here's the top comment on that story: "Yeah - but what if you don't want to reincarnate IN CHINA? Let's say you're just some dorky girl from the outskirts of HongKong and you want to reincarnate as a fabulous blonde from Minneapolis? Or if your some poor sap of a dude in the army patrolling the Mongolian border and you want to come back as a swashbuckling Argentinian cowboy? Do you have to fill out the forms then? OR do they have a separate collection of forms to be filled out in triplicate for people who are ontologically emigrating out of the Middle Kingdom? Hmmm. Those are some forms I'd like to see... "

High drama as Bikaner girl climbs cellphone tower in protest

JAIPUR: In reel life Veeru climbed a water tank to get married to Basanti, but in real life incident in Bikaner, a young girl climbed up a cellphone tower not to get married. The girl, Usha Bala, 22, wanted to pursue higher studies and become a member of the Prajapita Brahma Kumari ashram at Mt Abu. Her parents wanted to get her married soon and got her engaged almost three months back. Bala, however, was not keen with the marriage and on Wednesday noon protested against the decision of her parents by climbing the tower from where she threatened to jump, if they do not revert their decision. Soon after, her family members and senior police officers, rushed to the spot and tried to convince her not to take the extreme step. Bala told a crowd of over 500 people that she will come down only if her parents cancel her marriage, a senior police officer in Bikaner said. "From her father to neighbours, everyone tried to convince her to come down from the tower, but the girl was adamant. Since Rajasthan had witnessed the death of a young boy in Sawai Madhopur, we were trying to deal it very sensibly and we continuously spoke to her over the mobile phone," a senior police officer said. "It was a 60 feet tower and she kept threatening that she will jump off the tower if her parents do not agree to her demands. Later, she requested us to call her grandfather on his cellphone. Only after her grandfather assured her that nobody in the family will get her married against her will, she came down," the officer added. After the one hour-long high drama, Bala was arrested and later released. "We immediately took her in custody and booked the girl for suicide bid. She was later released on bail," police said. Talking to reporters, Bala said she will not hesitate to take this step if her family talks about her marriage again. "Nobody can compel me to get married even if they are my parents," she said.

One of my closest friends does this all the time:haha:
I know it sounds crazy, but according to Yunani 'doctors' if a person is bit by a rabid dog, in addition to the medicine, he/she should be 'barked at' by his/her friends/ family for a quick recovery. This practice was quite common in our country until some years ago. :--D

there's another common practice: For some pains and cramps, one is supposed to get cured if he\she gets kicked by someone who was born inverted.... (born inverted means taken out legs first instead of face first)
