3 points here. 1. azhar is still bitter about tendulkar kicking him out of the team back in 1999 2. azhar knows that without tendulkar, he wouldnt have survived in captaincy because every single trophy, test series india won under him was mainly because of tendulkar. azhar minus tendulkar was nothing 3. azhar is a match fixer and a cheat, he can go **** himself.

More importantly some of the fixed matches were spoilt by Sachin :cantstop:

It always surprises me how a proven match-fixer like Azhar is allowed to represent people and sit in Indian Parliament. It's really shameful. Why the hell his comments should be given any kind of importance.

:haha::haha::haha::haha::haha: Thats correct MP. Tendulkar was instrumental in Azhar's success as captain.

Classic case of shooting the messenger going on here. I feel Azhar took a dignified route by choosing not to discuss any controversial cricket topics. He only criticized Tendulkar's captaincy and to imply he did so because he was a match fixer is downright stupid because there are literally millions of people who believe Tendulkar is an ordinary captain, maybe Tendulkar himself as well.

Yeah, Azhar was a match fixer so he should be barred from doing anything in life? Let's go ahead and hang him, since his life has become worthless. Azhar did his offense and served his punishment, and has every right to move on from the episode. It's good to see him enjoying his role as a MP, and hopefully he will play his part in improving his constituency. Good luck, Azhar!

Not going to happen sadly. He lives in Hyderabad and the Congress gave him a ticket from Moradabad in Uttar Pradesh and since becoming the MP he has hardly visited the city. But I completely agree on all other points by you. Just because he was a match fixer does not mean that his life is finished and whatever he did in cricket should automatically be ridiculed. He was a fine player and a great captain so his views still hold weight IMO.

Agreed completely. A few things to ponder:
    a) Before SRT and after Sunny, Azharuddin was the most shining star on Indian batting horizon. Add to it a very successful captaincy record(admittedly boosted by series returns in India) and Azhar's credentials are definitely respectful, even if clouded under match fixing scandals. b) SRT, for all his talent, received full support of Azhar during Azhar's captaincy days. It took SRT 79 or so LOI to score a century. A return of 30 off after 70 plus LOI would be enough to drop a player. That he was not dropped, and was allowed to open the innings (again under Azhar) should atleast force people to give credit where its due. c) South African players give a lot of respect to Hansie Cronje, someone in similar situation as Azhar. Players like Pollock and Donald openly admire and appreciate his performance as skipper. Even Tendulkar noted his merits as captain, and fairly recently as the bowler who gave him a lot of trouble. Compare this with India where players, and BCCI, detached themselves completely from Azhar. d) Lastly what would the reaction had been had Azhar mentioned something like - Oh yeah I am very much in touch with players Dhoni and Raina and Yuvraj??? You would most likely have heard match fixing rumours lol..

Someone mentioned the word "fanboy" for a few in this thread. Exactly my sentiment too. xxx

I know you can't punish everybody for life for the any mistakes that they make. They wiould still have a life to live on. But having somebody as member of parliament within 10 years of some crime which he commited against crores of gives an impression if system being too lenient in certain aspects.

Don’t want to succumb to the easy temptation and start bashing Azhar left, right and center, but the man has lost almost all of the respect he had. In fact, I’d rather not see him, or even hear about him, ever again. I wish he just sort of fades away from all public conscience. But one thing sort of stands out in the interview – He has the absolute cheek to say he would have played a lot longer, if he was allowed to. Really Azhar, really? Werent all those matches that you sold already not enough? Don’t you realize that, with a crime like that, you shouldn’t be anywhere even REMOTELY close to the Indian cricket team? I dont care what Azhar does or does not, in his life after cricket. He could become a movie-star if he wanted to, it is none of my business. But how could he possibly even think that he deserved a spot in the Indian cricket team, after all that he had done? Thats like a convicted arsonist asking to be appointed as the head of security for the very same building he helped burn down! This only goes on to show how lightly these guys view some of their actions. The automatic inference to make here is that, corruption and match-fixing were pretty much a commonplace and banal occurrence back in those days, that no one really thought twice before indulging in them, nor did they ever feel guilty about it. Its not an unreasonable assumption to say that pretty much a majority of the cricket played in the late 80s and 90s was either partially or completely tainted. No wonder we sucked balls back then and couldn’t win a book-cricket game, let alone an actual match.

For someone unknown reason, it's the Tendulkar fanboys who seem to have an illogical acrimony for Azhar. Comments like Azhar owes all his wins to Tendulkar - what rubbish. If we are talking about tests all of Azhar's wins came at home, where Tendulkar's contribution while important, was nothing compared to Kumble. If anything, Azhar owes his test wins to Kumble more than anyone else. The average age of this forum also precludes the appreciation of anyone or anything before the mid 90s or so. It might work for undisputed all time greats like Gavaskar, Richards, or Kapil (well even he does not get spared by the fanboys) but as soon as you try to praise some of the very good, but not great cricketers like Azhar and Vengsarkar there is a segment which runs off to stats guru and produces inane numbers. What these fanboys fail to realize is that praising someone's achievements, does not equate to running down Tendulkar nor does it merit an automatic comparison. Since Gavaskar's retirement to the early-mid 90s when Tendulkar really came into his own, Indian batting was shored up by players like Vengsarkar and Azhar. They were not great and had their struggles on bouncy pitches like most Indian batsmen, but they were instrumental in many superb Indian performances. It's disappointing to see and and every thread on Azhar meander into meaningless name calling - just open a thread about the role of Azhar in match fixing and vent out your frustrations there, rather than derailing threads from their topic.

b) Point B is kinda bordering on being a ridiculous suggestion. Firstly, during those times Test team and ODI teams used to be same and Sachin had very much established himself a premier test batsman of world by end of 1992 as well. Secondly in those days 30 wasn't that bad return for an ODI player. Other batsmen of that era had similar averages like Srikkanth - 29, Ravi Shashtri - 29, Manjrekar 33 etc. In 1993, Azhar himself had career average of 34 in ODI's. So what more you can ask than having a teenager who is also averaging in 30's. I very well recall by the time Sachin had hit his first century in ODI, he was already no 1 batsman of ODI team as well. It was just unthinkable to drop Sachin at that moment. c) Cronje may have got a bit more support, bacause of sympathy factor - came in scene because of his untimely death. I think BCCI and players did right thing by detaching themselves from Azhar.

Crime committed? He supposedly fixed matches and was disbarred by BCCI for life from cricket. The CBI did not follow up with any criminal law suit against him. He appealed against the action of BCCI and that case is still pending.

I don't think Azhar said anything wrong. He just said "Tendulkar didn't have it in him to succeed as a captain". I think that's a fair statement as most Sachin fans would agree as well that he's a great batsman - maybe next only to Don - but he wasn't cut out to be a captain. Some folks simply are not good captains, just like some people never make good managers. On the other hand there are others like Mike Brearley, Imran, Ganguly and Dhoni who take to captaincy as ducks to water.

[Fanboy] But, but see...how can he say such a thing about Sachin. What is his aukaad? He used to fix matches. He owes all his success as captain to Sachin and is jealous of him. He played Muslim card. How can he be allowed to become a MP after fixing matches? .........Insert 1000 more red herrings rather than talking about the topic. [/Fanboy]

Azhar is an obvious soft-target among the fans. Its easy to say whatever you want to say about him, even completely unjustified things, and yet not be called out for it, because of his shady past. At the end of the day, he didn’t kill anyone. He sold a few matches. While that is simply an unpardonable crime in cricketing terms, there’s absolutely no justification in villifying in all sorts of ways. He should and must be able to lead his life beyond cricket as and how he choses to.
