NareshK Posted February 28, 2011 Posted February 28, 2011 Any spin bowler can go for runs when you are bowling in the death. Especially at Chinnaswamy, when there is no turn and the boundaries are small, its easy to be hit for sixes. He also took two important wickets and gave away just 2 runs in the penultimate over of his spell. It would be a knee jerk reaction to drop him as he looks like a wicket taking option, especially on tracks which offer spin. Even Harbhajan is not bowling great anymore and others look to mostly contain runs. So I feel he should be in our lineup.
Ranjha Posted February 28, 2011 Posted February 28, 2011 He bowled really poorly in 49th over. I won't mind replacing him with Ashwin who can bowl in pps and prolly better than Chawla in death overs.
Ranjha Posted February 28, 2011 Posted February 28, 2011 Pressure goT to him. He is young. Unless we can somehow not bowl him at the death, then he can play.
NareshK Posted February 28, 2011 Author Posted February 28, 2011 I dont consider Ashwin a wicket taking option. Nobody can be sure a bowler can bowl well in the death overs, especially spinners. If the wicket offers turn, Chawla can be quite good. Also I feel, Indian bowlers always get dropped after one or two bad performances whereas the batsmen get an extended run. It should be the other way around as the pitches in India heavily favor the batsmen. This is the reason we cant seem to produce consistent, good quality bowlers.
yoda Posted February 28, 2011 Posted February 28, 2011 Problem with Chawla and even Ashwin is that they were never really prepared for the WC. Ashwin is a very recent entrant and Chawla hasn't played any ODIs for a while before his selection to the WC team. Given that this WC is in India, how do you not plan ahead to identify your 2nd and 3rd spinners well in advance is beyond me.
vvvslaxman Posted February 28, 2011 Posted February 28, 2011 I dont consider Ashwin a wicket taking option. Nobody can be sure a bowler can bowl well in the death overs' date= especially spinners. He has picked 14 wickets in 7 ODIs. He was the man of the series in the T20 champions league. He was the go to bowler for Dhoni in power play. How is that he is not a wicket taking option.
NareshK Posted February 28, 2011 Author Posted February 28, 2011 From what I've seen, Ashwin looks to mostly contain runs than pick wickets. I feel Chawla has more wicket taking ability than Ashwin. I just think he shouldnt be judged by his performance in yesterday's match because the wicket was flat as it can be and the outfield was fast and the boundaries were short and there was a lot of pressure to bowl in the death. He bowled a few rippers which Strauss and Bell had no clue how to play and on his day, he could have got them out. Also he lends a lot of variety as he is a leggie.
shrapnel Posted February 28, 2011 Posted February 28, 2011 U Chawlas relative? Lol Obviously.... or else Dhoni in disguise !
NareshK Posted February 28, 2011 Author Posted February 28, 2011 U Chawlas relative? Lol Nope. I feel Indian bowlers dont get backed enough. Any bowler could have got murdered in flat pancake wickets like yesterday.
kabira Posted February 28, 2011 Posted February 28, 2011 Dhoni's poor captaincy. When Chawla got into good rhythm, he got Trott, was looking dangerous, should have continued with him for another 2-3 overs. Another decision was last over of power play, Chawla had bowled well in one of the power play wover, shouldh ave given chawla that over and kept one over of Zaheer for 49th over.
asterix Posted February 28, 2011 Posted February 28, 2011 Chawla bowled short throughout his quota of overs.. Dragging down the ball..Thus defeating the very idea of having a wrist spinner..Even if you spin the ball it'll be easy to play if you bowl short..
kabira Posted February 28, 2011 Posted February 28, 2011 Nope. I feel Indian bowlers dont get backed enough. Any bowler could have got murdered in flat pancake wickets like yesterday. I am with you. But I think our bowlers bowled too short...and field placing from captain were atroticous
DomainK Posted February 28, 2011 Posted February 28, 2011 A golden rule bowling at death is not to let the batsman get under the ball. If they can, they will swing and most likely clear the boundary. Unfotunatey, Chowla did exactly that. Even Munaf gave a perfect length delivery for a six. However, these are not the only times they made mistakes. We cant even count then blunders in this match.
Sachinism Posted February 28, 2011 Posted February 28, 2011 Chawla bowled trash. Was too short all innings
King Posted February 28, 2011 Posted February 28, 2011 Didn't inspire really, he didn't look like he knew his role. He wasn't really attacking. Leg spinners thrive taking wickets not bowling flat and fast. I would have liked him to toss up in the fist spell rather than try to contain England batsmen. England doesn't fear bowlers that are there to contain but they struggle against bowlers that tease them with flight and turn. Chawla had neither yesterday. Also on flat pitches, change of paces is what gets wickets and tests the batsmen. Ask Vettori, Bhajji or even Afridi. If the ball is bowled at the same speed, pretty much it becomes predictable and none of the international cricketers including the tail are mugs with the bat. They can all hit the ball long and hard.
kabira Posted February 28, 2011 Posted February 28, 2011 ^To his defense, he got into rhythm and got Trott, was troubling Strauss and Bell. But dhoni took him off. He should have been bowled out.
bihutoli Posted February 28, 2011 Posted February 28, 2011 He seemed overwhelmed by the occasion. His first over was filled with long hops, and he never really got into rythym.

Wicket flat doesn't mean you are allowed to bowl the ball at your feet. He bowled so many rank long hops to Strauss. One of the reason Sachin is not bowling leg spin these days he bowls 2 or 3 long hops every over. Chawla did the exact same yesterday. Let us not blame the pitch for bowling poorly.
hari504504 Posted February 28, 2011 Posted February 28, 2011 Chawla does show a little promise.. if anyone needs to be replaced it is the 'grizzled veteran' Harbhajan - can't distinguish between his darts and Pathan's..
