Do you honestly think an Australian bowling or Pakistan bowling or SL bowling or even SA bowling would have contained the rampaging Indians in the first innings? I very much doubt so. They were still going to leak 330 easily. Only difference might have been the approach of chasing 330 plus would have been different for different teams. SOme of the approach might have worked. Some of the approach might not have worked. Yesterday Strauss played a risk free cricket aided by atrocious field set by Dhoni.

Ultimate_Game Posted February 28, 2011 Posted February 28, 2011 Let's be honest. The Eng-Ind game was once in a blue moon sort of a game very similar to Aus-SA game where SA chased 434. Everything went against India including dropped catches, shoddy fielding, edges not going to hands, bowler not appealing for actual edges off the bat TWICE, UDRS decision etc. Plus it didn't help matters that Dhoni had his field spread right from the word go against a player like Strauss who's not renowned for his big hitting or going over the top. Dhoni should have had 5-6 men in the circle and stopped easy singles and should have forced Strauss and Bell to go over the top. Don't worry, these things won't happen every time and Dhoni won't make the same mistake again.

Strauss is not a big hitter by nature. India should have forced him to attack more with clever field placement.

Looking at things, I believe India would be raking up 320+ scores on a regular basis against all teams, but it would be only once in a while when such total would be chased down. So I am not worried very much with what happened in last match.
NareshK Posted March 1, 2011 Posted March 1, 2011 I have seen enough matches at Chinnaswamy to know that sometimes the pitches are so flat its easy to chase down any total, especially under lights. The ball skids on to the bat and its better for batting. The outfield is lighting fast and the boundaries are so short that the spinners can be cleared for sixes easily. Remember McCullum's 150 + in the first IPL game, also played under lights. That's one of a kind innings you dont see anywhere. The bowlers are mostly helpless at this ground and their only chance of picking wickets is when batsmen play bad shots and get out. Zaheer Khan and Bresnan only picked wickets when the batsmen tried to score boundaries. And this is where Dhoni went wrong because he tried to contain the English batsmen and gave them easy singles. You can never do that on that pitch. He should have attacked them a lot more and tried to get them out.

Before the begining of the WC a lot of the players were complaning about the wickets and till now in almost all the matches most team came close to 300 (excluding some minnows). Even the first match of the tournament where We almost scored a 400 and Bangladesh even came close to 300 ... Are we really playing in some spin friendly pitches or cement roads? ...
