Raina is the Umer Akmal of India...High on promise' date=' low on confidence and :nono: for big match occasions.[/quote'] oh come on!! thats just way too much. Raina is a proven and established player and has performed consistently well for the last 3-4 years. His average and strike rate coming down the order are among the very best in the World and he can be lethal on Sub continent pitches.

If Raina were in the Pak team they would be comparing him to Tendulkar and Raina would be their star batsman coming in at 4. It's just that India has so much batting talent and everyone is in such great form that Raina had to miss out. It's not a slight to Raina but a compliment to India's batting depth.

This topic has been discussed many times...No need to create same threads. Unfortunately, there is no spot available for Raina. We have better batsmen playing ahead of him. He is good and his chance will come in future. For now, he must warm the bench and keep match fit in case.

Finally someone comes out with a post that really reflects the injustice meted out to Raina. I still remember how people were saying he was going to be our "ace" going into the WC. For a guy who has done a thankless job over the past 3 years(you can check his ODI averages over this period to see how impressive and consistent it is for #6) it is truly baffling he is judged on his last 10 innings!! True Kohli has been exceptional, but has he ever played the sort of innings under the sort of circumstances Raina faced over the last 3 years? I recall most of Kohli's runs coming in at #3. Further if you analyze the circumstances in which he has scored his 5 centuries you'll see each one of those have been comfortable situations. For example his last 2 centuries: 118 off 121balls against Aus at Kochi. http://www.espncricinfo.com/india-v-australia-2010/engine/match/464529.html Notice how Raina comes in lower down the order and scores an unbeaten 71 off 47 balls. Its easy to imagine what would have happened had Raina been given the opportunity to play at #3 in this game. Kohli's latest hundred was against bangladesh. We all know about the circumstances he faced here...basically wasn't much of a challenge. I remember atleast two more centuries of Kohli which came in exceptionally easy circumstances..one was against SL at home in which India chased down 300+ for the loss only 3 wickets. Gambhir also got an unbeaten 150 in this game. The other century I recall was against Bangladesh again...basically the same story-Kohli walks in at 3, India chase down the target easily with plenty of wickets to spare, every other batsmen in the line-up were thrashing the opposition with ridiculous ease while Virat nudged and tipped his way to a century. Contrast that with what Raina has been doing over the last 3 years: > anybody remember his innings against Pak in the recent Asia cup? Bhajji hogged the limelight with his finishing blow but it was Raina who sealed pak's fate long before that. > His last century was pretty amazing as well in the tri-series final we played in Bagladesh against SL. We were 60/5 when he singlehandedly took India to 245. > ICC champions torphy,2009 in SA against Pakistan. Chasing 300, we were 120/4 when Raina walked in. He absolutely thrashed Umar Gul and Afridi (who having a remarkably good day against us with the ball having snared Kohli and Dhoni) like its nothing. He just scored 41, but the shots he played were nothing short of amazing. > And there was that famous chase against Australia coouple of years ago in Hyderabad, the one where Sachin got a 175. Don't forget it was Raina at the other end after the top order had departed relatively early in the chase. He got a half century at more than run a ball iirc. > Even in recent series in SA in the ODI where we won after being 80/5...Raina scored an important 37 along with Yusuf who got a half century to see us through. These are some of the innings that I recall off the top of my head. WHile I'm certainly not doubting that kohli is technically superior and fully deserves his place in this side, I just feel Raina shouldn't have been the one to get the axe. True Pathan has done incredible things recently and Yuvraj is pretty much considered untouchable because of his bowling, and Gambhir is anyday superior to Raina...but its just incredibly harsh on him. Just to put things in perspective (in case you don't realise my point) he looks all set to hold 2 world records: 1. Most number of ODIs before test debut( around a 100).This is perhaps justified as he isn't quite adapted to the format. But the next one just takes the cake 2. 8 years before making a World Cup debut despite being the one most suited to dot he job of a finisher( think he averages 40 with SR of 90 at #6) and the best fielder in the side!! He might well be the most unlucky player to have donned the Indian jersey. PS: Sorry for the long post. Had to get that out of the system.

show stopper.. you didn't tell who should be dropped? Nobody is denying Raina is an asset. But who would you drop? There is no reasonable answer for that question. As someone said it is a long tournament, one injury here and there means Raina will walk in.

As someone said it is a long tournament' date=' one injury here and there means Raina will walk in.[/quote'] He already said Kohli should be dropped because he has scored all the free runs available in international cricket to boost his aggregate and average, while poor Raina is the one who has scored in challenging circumstances. Now the mean India team management is ill treating Raina, while glorifying Kohli for his cheap runs on flat tracks against pathetic attacks.

LOl was expecting this sort of a reply from The Outsider. While it is the gist of what I told, i believe you have twisted my statements.

Now the mean India team management is ill treating Raina, while glorifying Kohli for his cheap runs on flat tracks against pathetic attacks.
team management ill treating Raina <---- true Kohli scored cheap runs <----- absolutely Flat tracks <----- did not allude to this in my entire post. Even if it were true, it would be the same for Raina as well. So I don't see how that matters or why you would include that there except to patronise me? @ VVS I think we can agree that Kohli is nowhere near the batsmen that Raina is at #6. This was clearly on display the other day against England when we lost wickets in a heap towards the end and scored about 15-20 runs less than we should have. It certainly is no coincidence the one match Kohli sent in down the order and gets royally screwed! My point is simple with out top 3 being- Sehwag, Sachin, Gambhir do we really need a kohli at #4? I really fail to see how he adds value to the top order? He isn't technically superior to the above 3 (which is the whole point of kohli - to rescue the ship in case of a top order collapse). I think Yuvraj coming in #4 followed by Dhoni and Raina will be much more effective for us in case there isn't a collapse and the need is to accelerate the RR in a steep chase. Infact in such a situation, Kohli coming in at #4 would be counter productive. Above all there is one point that needs attention- Whenever Kohli has got a game in the past one the top 3 weren't playing! This was the only reason he was allowed to bat as high as #3. Now with all 3 fit and willing, he doesn't offer anything more at the top of the order that the other 3 don't. And lower down the order he simply doesn't have the ability IMO. A sincere request to Outsider to not twist the above statement...I know for a fact that you're smart enough to realise exactly what I'm saying.

I think one way of conclusively settling this would be look at the number of innings kohli has played when the going hasn't been easy. I recall two straightaway: His 87 in the recent ODI against in SA. I think he also got another half century in the same series. Two exceptional innings because most of our batsmen struggled. If people remember others please refresh my memory...

raina isnt as good a run accumulator as kohli, and he isnt as explosive a hitter as yusuf. dunno why ppl keep mentioning him time and again. he is a decent player but he has to sit out the batting lineup india has is the best possible combination. deal with it

My world cup dream is half-baked and incomplete without Raina's presence in the team :((
Dude would you really be upset if India wins the cup without Raina in the playing XI? Hell, if India's guaranteed a world cup title if Tendulkar and Sehwag should be replaced by Sreesanth and Chawla, I would jump at the deal! As Team India fans the only thing we should be concerned with is how to win the cup and not who should be in the team WHEN we win the cup.

The problem is Raina can not take Kohlis place. His place is guaranteed at his position. The fight is for 2 positions between the following 3 players. Yuvraj Raina Pathan

Yuvrajs spot is pretty much sealed with 2 fifties and a 5fer plus his experience in the previous worldcups and potential to get in full flow. But it's a long tourney so you never know... Pathan is also looking good. Raina must sit out for now....

Yea dude. He's out of his mind. He should drop Sachin & include Raina. What a terrific player Raina is. Mashallah! The way he plays T20s for Chennai on placid pitches, what a criteria for selecting him in the Indian WORLD CUP ODI line-up. Look, the fact that he is the part of the 15 itself is a matter of great pride. Lets not demand too much. If he's to get chances, if he deserves to get chances ahead of celebrated & game-changing players, he will. PS - I'm being sarcastic when I say Raina should come in over Tendulkar.

He isn't as out of his mind as you are, Mashallah.
