No doubt he has shown some promise, but he is as new to this stage as chawla was 3 games ago. Ashwin should have got one of the 2 games between Netherlands/Irelands, but most of the posts automatically assume Ashwin is going to run over the opposition just because Chawla isnt doing well. He is just as likely to be belted as Chawla is. the only thing going against Ashwin's selection at the current point is the absolute lack of variation in our attack. Even our part timers are all off spinners which brings us to the contentious topic of replacing Bhajji with Ashwin and retaining chawla. However, in the light of Bhajji's experience I doubt the selectors would go with this

Ultimate_Game Posted March 10, 2011 Posted March 10, 2011 I think Ashwin will come in to the team in the latter stages of the tourney based on the following comment made by Dhoni at the toss... “Piyush Chawla stays. Compared to Ashwin, Chawla needs more practice so we decided to play him today. Ashwin is mentally stronger and it doesn't matter against whom he comes in, he will do well.” Essentially Dhoni wants to give as many chances to Chawla to see whether he can do the job at the business end of the tourney since he already knows what Ashwin can do and knows Ashwin can deliver without getting too many games in the group stages.

And MSD is stubborn like a mule - he is pulling a T20-Ravi-Jadeja stubborness with Chawla in this WC.

So no difference between you lot and the captain who you are critizing for doing the same thing as you lot are doing. Chawla may not be best spinner. I agree. But even Ashwin is not the best spinner. No one knows who is better, honestly it depends more on the opponents and team composition, this is where Chawla comes in, he has far more possibilities and offer us a proper spinner.

No one knows who is better, Dhoni knows. That is what he said. "He is mentally strong. He can deliver rightaway". According to his evaluation Chawla is playing just for "building confidence". Even in the IPL team when he had Murali at disposal he always went to Ashwin.

Ashwin is not totally an unknown bowler. He bowled in the IPL. Pretty much all international players know about him.

I do agree Dhoni and his comments are not exactly sending the correct message but he has a reason for picking Chawla which is he is a good spinner unlike the other two.

I think its the fans who are behaving like mules by always picking on a single member of the squad and blaming him for the ills of a team. First it was Yusuf Pathan, then Jadeja, then during tests for a brief time it was "why Ojha, why not Mishra", in between Nehra was the villain and now the new target is Chawla. Put every blame on the door of one individual and keep punching him. Yes he has been inconsistent and has hardly bowled to potential, but the the kind of pasting he has been getting on the forum isn't justified IMO. 1-2 good performances and everyone will jump on the bandwagon like they did with Yusuf Pathan, Ojha or even Virat Kohli.

More like India's favourite punching bag akin to Pakistan's Kamran Akmal. But lets give credit where due. Jadeja was a good bowler. Picked up wickets, kept the pressure and did a great job for Team India. The variation factor & batting went against him getting picked for India for the World Cup.

Jaddu deserved the slot over Chawla. Maybe Ojha deserved the spot too. But they had just 1 slot and 3 people vying. The skipper went for "variation". And if you compare Ravi to Ravi, I'll prefer the SLA over the offie, only for the amount of experience and expertise in the Indian subcontinent.

asterix Posted March 10, 2011 Posted March 10, 2011 He should be really ashamed of himself bowling those pathetic half-trackers on a regular basis..And he has been bowling like that for long. In all the 3 IPL editions, he bowled like that regularly for Kings XI Punjab..No wonder Kings XI Punjab ended up at the bottom of the pile on those IPL editions. Not comparing his bwoling in T20 matches to what he does in ODIs but I've seen him consitently bowl half trackers and no-balls. He drags the ball down while bowling a leg-spin and the ball pitches short of lenght giving enough time for the batsman to whack it.. So I can understand what Dhoni means when he says about Chawlas "patches of brilliance". It means in patches he bowls a good length deliveries..In other "patches" he bowls half-trackers..In some other "patches" he bowls no-balls.. So select whichever "patches" you like and be happy..
