The second did the same. The third suitor said, "I have a gold crown." He is correct, but the daughter was puzzled: This suitor was blind. How did he know?

The first two guys should have been smart enough to not blurt out their answer ( that they didn't know). Their eagerness was the only reason the blind guy got the princess. They should have just waited and no one would have won.

So the second guy is left with six possible combinations. 1 2 b ------ g g g s g s--X s s g s g g g s g g g s--X As you can see he could have guessed he was wearing gold only for the combinations I have crossed out. Since he did not guess those combinations are also out. So finally the blind dude is left with 4 possible combinations 1 2 b ------ g g g s s g s g g g s g Guess what, he is wearing gold crown in all the 4 combinations. :--D

Since he didn't know, he must have seen at least one gold crown. #2 knows this, so if he saw a silver crown on #3, he'd know that he (#2) must have a gold crown. But he didn't know, hence he must have seen gold crown on #3. And that is how blind #3 deduced that he had a gold crown.
