pinkfreud Posted March 11, 2011 Posted March 11, 2011 We'll win the match if Amla and de Villiers are done away with, because both are the best players of spin in their team. Their middle order isn't as good as ours, while our bowling is obviously the worst of the top notch teams. Should be a cracker of a match. I hope our top order, especially Gautam Gambhir, fire tomorrow, Gauti needs a good run more than anyone else in the team now.
Ultimate_Game Posted March 11, 2011 Posted March 11, 2011 Let me try to get this straight... so according to Amla the pressure is on the team who is unbeaten through the first 4 games and has already qualified for the knockouts, and not on the team who "choked" in their last game while chasing 170 odd for victory losing 7 wkts for 40 odd in the process. Plus the team who "choked" hasn't qualified for the knockouts yet and still apparently doesn't have "pressure"!!! Maybe this is the new strategy SA team management and players are following - ignore there's any pressure. If there's no pressure they can't choke :haha:

He's one of the few decent guys in the SA team and he isn't entirely wrong- the pressure really is on Team India considering that they're playing at home and also have to start playing to their potential. Going by the last few matches, many people are unhappy with Dhoni & Co. The pressure's on them to pull up their socks well before a home crowd.

If its in India, then the pressure is on us to appease the billion Indians in India and stay true to our Indian pitches record. If it is outside India, then the pressure is on us to appease the billion Indians in India and try to erase our inane FTB image that should have been long forgotten. We have a billion people. A billion cricket crazy people with no other sport to support. Not to mention of having strong expat and ethnic population in most of the countries that plays cricket. Ofcourse we are going to be under pressure anywhere. That is something we just have to live with. I dont see how Amla or Smith saying something similar deserves the wrath of ICF?

Ye, India will be under pressure - hell, India are always under pressure at home due to huge expectations but you can't tell me India has more pressure than a team who couldn't chase 170 odd! And if they lose today they have a tricky game coming up against B'desh and who knows what happens if B'desh bats first with their spinners coming on later in the game. Truth is SA can't handle pressure at all and are simply acting like ostriches - they are ignoring the pressure and simply burying their heads in the sand

Strangely, we are under more pressure in spite of what you just pointed out, because Nagpur is supposedly a batting haven, so the onus (and expectations) are on our top order to perform. If the Nagpur pitch would have been bowler friendly, then the pressure would've been thrust on our bowlers. When you look at it either way, India is always a team that is burdened by over a billion expectations, and everyone knows it already. Amla was just stating that fact as an answer to a question, I don't think he was playing mind games or anything of the sort. Now Ricky Ponting on the other hand... :D

MS Dhoni is the shrewdest captain in the tournament, so therefore it makes sense to give him plenty of firepower. The taking of wickets is important in the middle overs, as India found to their chagrin against England. At times, Harbhajan Singh drops too easily into containment mode, especially if he doesn’t claim an early scalp. While this can be handy in a crisis, taking wickets must be the number one priority. In the case of Piyush Chawla, who Dhoni seems intent on playing, he’s shown his best form (apart from the warm-up match with Australia), bowling against the minnows. The minnows will be absent once the knockout stage is reached. By playing R Ashwin instead of Chawla, India will give their skipper more options. Against the major teams, Ashwin can be used in the early powerplay overs and he's also a likely wicket-taker in the middle overs. He’s also a tougher competitor than Chawla and will put up a fight for his wicket when he bats. The Indian World Cup campaign is on track but that doesn’t mean the line-up couldn’t do with a bit of tweaking to make it even more competitive against the major sides. In a drawn out tournament like this World Cup with such variation in the opponents class, the important thing is to be totally prepared for the knockout stage. In this regard India has missed a few tricks along the way. They appear too top heavy in steady batsmen with Gautam Gambhir and Virat Kohli being over-kill. That smacks of being worried that against the strong pace attacks of South Africa and Australia they might need to rebuild their innings after losing a couple of early wickets. When you prepare for the worst it generally happens. If India must go with a long batting line-up they’d better play Kohli at 3 and then replace Gambhir with Suresh Raina in the middle-order. Kohli is capable of handling the loss of an early wicket and he is also a better fielder than Gambhir, plus he gives you another bowling option. Raina at six or seven would give India an explosive middle-order. Yuvraj Singh, Yusuf Pathan and Raina is a destructive trio that no other team can match, plus once again Raina improves the fielding and is also another bowling option. Fielding will make a difference in the latter stages of this tournament. When quizzed the other day on improving the Indian fielding, Dhoni said; “The fast fielders will remain quick and the slow ones will still be slow.†Dhoni's logic is irrefutable but the fielding can be improved by tweaking the line-up, as long as the run scoring capabilities of the side isn't harmed. In addition, as I mentioned above, India need to improve the wicket-taking capacity of the team. Judging by results, India is prepared for the big clash with South Africa. However, they could be an even more dangerous opponent if they select their most versatile combination
