With the group stage almost done and dusted, the rift has only increased. It's understood that Dhoni's "stubbornness" regarding team selection hasn't gone down too well either with the BCCI bosses or with the selectors. And now, with just a couple of days to go for the crucial game against West Indies at the MA Chidambaram Stadium, chairman of selectors Krishnamachari Srikkanth met Dhoni & Co at the team hotel just before they were to come for practice. One understands that a few harsh words were spoken and the team management was asked to have a closer look at the playing XI. Dhoni has been extremely stubborn on the issue of playing with Piyush Chawla as the second spinner and the selection committee thinks that "it's time R Ashwin is given a chance". A couple of days back, two selectors had a talk with Dhoni and he was clearly told that "Chawla has got enough chances" and that Ashwin should be in the playing XI. But the skipper was not ready to budge, even though there are senior members in the team who believe that the TN offie should get his chance. Chika, despite his stature, has never interfered with the playing XI, but now that things have gone too far, there was no other alternative for the chairman but to have a talk with the team management. He clearly communicated the displeasure of the selectors but finally left it to the captain to take his call. BCCI secretary N Srinivasan was also present and was a witness to the conversion between the chairman of selectors and the captain. Later, Chika was present at the IIT Chemplast ground as well where he caught up with the other members of the team. The chairman had a long conversation with coach Gary Kirsten and later he was seen having a talk with the bowlers. As the media swarmed around him for a sound byte, he refused for the time being. "We will have a talk after India win the West Indies game," Chika said trying his best to deflate the tension. Meanwhile, Suresh Raina has been given indications from the team management that he will play Sunday's game. The left-hander has mentioned to his close friends that he is making mental preparations to play the game. Ashwin vs Piyush What works in favour of Ashwin: - His ability to bowl in the Powerplays. The off-spinner is known to contain the batsmen. - Has done well in the Chennai, which is home turf for him. What not for Chawla: -Hasn't been able to contain batsmen or take wickets. - Is under immense pressure to perform. Dhoni got it hot and crispy from BCCI:two_thumbs_up:About time I think. Dhoni was still planning to play Chawla in the match against WI:omg: Stubbornness ki bhi hadh ho gayi :omg: Personally, I think a CBI inquiry should be held into some of Dhoni's team selections. I'm quite certain a lot of money has changed hands... I mean there is almost certainly something fishy about repeatedly selecting a player in the first 11, who has been out in the wilderness for the past 2-3 years and is a mediocre bowler at best, that too with suspect temperament !!

If he does, then he must be dealt with very strictly. This smacks of favouritism. But then, I hope this incident doesn't mess with Dhoni's mind on the field and lead our team to get affected in their performances! That said though, I don't think Gary Kirsten should have got the wrong end of the stick. That, to me, was very wrong. Everyone knows that in India, it's the captain who calls the shots, not the coach. Chappell tried to do just that, and see where it took us.

No one , except he himself knows why is he sticking with chawla, who has bowled too badly in this tourney. If dohni and his men want to stay longer in the tourney, they shud play play ashwin and raina, and not chawla and pathan. As for chika, he is absolutely rite in his place. Being a selector he has got the full authority to criticise dhoni's madness.

MumbaiIndian Posted March 18, 2011 Posted March 18, 2011 How many of you thinks Team India has not really performed well besides Munaf and Nehra? I think India played really well against SA. Clearly anywhere it did not look like SA deserved to win. They struggled for 40 overs and even while chasing. Rest of the matches of India has not been like match winning but this team has the ability to play under any circumstances and I think that's what more important is. Yes we choked, but who thought we could have pulled a tie against England? I mean it was so clear India was losing right from first ball. I know this team is not performing at it's best but to me, this team looks very strong out of all the teams. Team India's problem is only one, 1 bowler. That's all they are looking for. This team has not to worry about any bowling attack from any given team. Someone will play for sure. It's the way batting line up is like. Twice they lost their openers and Yuvi & Dhoni took the charge. Point is they will carry it pretty well. They have good plans for batting. Talking about bowling, Bhaji may not have been at it's best but he does smart bowling and so Zaheer. Yuvi is a suprise package to Team India when it comes to bowling. About Pathan, I feel sorry for him. His batting order has ruined his form. This team is strong because they all are big match winners. Beisdes Munaf and Nehra, anybody can change the game from this team which makes me still believe India are favs! P.S - If Munaf & Nehra get serious about their line and length, I think it's quiet hard to beat Team India. Forget the media and news, they all just talk anything to make you read cause that's their job. But this team still looks very strong to me. Just that they have not set the rhythm yet, if you know what I mean?

Rest is captain's prerogative. and if the Captain's prerogative turns out to be selecting Chawla again and again and again despite his bad bowling then I think the Chairman of Selectors has the responsibility to have a few words with the Captain.

Besides, I very much doubt that Dhoni has been a total rebel when it comes to team selection. It would hardly reach a stage where Dhoni will have to be given a blasting for his decision.

Media has a habit of joining voice when one of them reports something masaledar because no one wants to be left behind. It's like one dog starts howling and in no time the rest also start howling. There are no direct quotes from anyone and I seriously doubt that Cheeka was shouting at Dhoni in a hotel lobby.

pinkfreud Posted March 18, 2011 Posted March 18, 2011 The media is fully capable of ramping up this incident up to be much more than what it actually is, saying Dhoni was 'blasted' etc., but the BCCI talking to Dhoni about his selections isn't something that is out of their league. They're fully capable of doing it.

They may have had a talk and discussed about things but at the end of the day, the decisions rest with the captain. I think Chawla is a good prospect on Indian pitches because he is a leggie but he seriously looks like he doesnt have enough matches under his belt. He has not played ODIs for the past couple of years. He is bowling too short and doesnt seem to have control. Especially if put under pressure, he is all over the place and seems to lack confidence. It begs the question what the selectors were thinking when they selected this guy and why they have not played him before in ODIs if they considered him an important part of our bowling attack for this WC ? It looks like a serious lack of foresight on part of BCCI and the selectors. Anyway, I feel Ashwin should be an obvious replacement for Chawla in the next match.
ZodiaC Posted March 18, 2011 Posted March 18, 2011 Masala news, though I can't fathom his reluctancy to pick Ashwin over Nehra/Chawla. I don't rate him like some others do, but still he's easily a better option than both the above.
