Ian Chappell - what a whining idiot

This bloke's a drag. What a boring commentator this man is? I think he is way over-rated as player and captain as well. He sounds as if no one has ever lead a team in the world. People say he's good with tactics but he's always making wrong calls and has barely ever been proven right. I wonder if he really has the acumen and ability to read games.

Because it is ridiculous.
Oh, really ? I'll tell you what is ridiculous. 1) Two players caught for doping, picked for a world cup squad & then sidelined as "injured" (when they tested positive privately) is ridiculous. 2) Three players caught for spot-fixing, being defended publicly by the PCB chairman & further with lawyers over a judicial process is ridiculous. 3) Picking a ball biting, pitch dancing loonie-toonie as captain over a more level headed Younis Khan or Misbah is ridiculous. So lets not go there!
Or is it alright because it is a Pakistani player that he is targeting? Yes, Afridi is an idiot and we know that. Is there a need to keep talking about it and then take it a new low where you have a problem with a method of celebration or a team huddle?
No its not alright because he is Pakistani. But its alright because Afridi as you admit is ridiculous. If Chappelli says that about Misbah or Younis, then at least you could find factual faults with him. Now you yourself agree that Afridi is an idiot & you are unhappy that Ian Chappell said it ? If it matters to you, if a cricket commentator says that "Sun rises in the east" i wont be upset with him, because he is telling it like it is. As for Ian's other comments, you are asking for commentators to drool over a team that has demonstrated zero respect for the game ? Face it, all the ridicule that Pakistani cricket has drawn in the recent months, is its own doing.
The problem with Chappell is that he gets personal and once he hates someone, he won't stop with the comments about his cricket. We've see him do it with S Waugh and Gilly as well. Someone posted about Chappell hyping Haddin. This has been happening for ages. It is his way of getting back at Gilly. Remember his comments about how Australia would not miss Gilly since Haddin is a better keeper as good a batsman?
Hey, commentators come in all flavors. Some are diplomatic and hence boring (such as Benaud) and others are honest and forthright (such as Chappell). I'd listen to Chappell any day. Just for perspective, Rameez Raja called SRT selfish (after his spectacular run-a-ball 100 on some Geo-Sheo news channel in Pakistan). Do you see Indian fans upset over this ? We just laugh him off.

The first part of the post is completely irrelevant. This is not about Pakistan. Chappell has strong likes and dislikes and gets personal. He has a long history (already mentioned about Gilly and Waugh). Read up about his dislike for Don Bradman. If Bradman was playing today, he's find ways to talk rubbish about him. He talks rubbish most of the time since he is too busy trying to settle scores. That is NOT good commentary and that is NOT being honest. If he was honest, he would not hype his favourites as he does. Benaud is a legend. The fact that you think that he is boring says a lot.

May be because your question was irrelevant. You admitted that Ian was criticizing a ridiculous guy/act as ridiculous. My examples just show how much of ridicule Pakistani cricketers & PCB has subjected the game to. Compared to that everything that you guys are witnessing is nothing.

Having followed him for 10+ years, I know a thing or two about him. He is a polarising personality. Some like him, some hate him. I dont find him boring to listen to.

Benaud may be a legend, but he is friggin boring. Of late, you rarely hear him point out the subtleties in the game. Though his voice is legendary. Anyways, all this is a personal preference, adds nothing to this discussion. When I listen to Sachin giving his MoM speech, i can predict word for word what he is going to say. I find him boring. OTOH, Sehwag tells it like it is. He may hurt a few, but always worth listening to.

This isn't about liking him or not. That, as you said, is a personal choice. I quoted your original post where you asked why non-Pakistanis should have an issue with it. I told you about his history with players. It has nothing to do with a country. He has strong likes and dislikes in every country. You've avoided responding to that and went on about spot-fixing. Since he is so biased, you cannot possibly say that he is honest. An honest commentator would call it like he sees it and keep his personal likes and dislikes aside. Chappell fails massively in this regard (just like most Indian commentators btw). If you believed every word that he said, you'd think that Doug Walters was the greatest player of all time. You're probably unaware of Chappell's history and find his settling of scores to be honest commentary. I, like most other people, can also predict what Chappell spend most of his time talking about during a particular game.

Chappel is stupid because he told the truth. He would be hailed as a great statesman if he said something negative about Indian player. The other forum would be singing his praises. He said what everyone knows. Afridi is exactly what he said he is.

He called Afridi crazy and idiotic. No other commentator would have the balls to say that. Even if they did, they would probably sugar coat it by using some politically correct bull ****. The guy is direct and blunt. Definitely not an ass kisser like Manjrekar or Rameez Raja.

His comments on Afridi was not the issue here. His comments on team huddle was the line he shouldn't have crossed. He sounded grumpy and it is not pleasent to hear that in a commentary. Who is fu ck he thinks he is to comment like that?

what is wrong with what he said here? afridi is crazy. correct. i think he was being generous. afridi is retarded, not crazy. chappell was being diplomatic on this occasion. 2nd point about the celebration is also correct. he is an attention wh[o]re. its not surprising, because he is the paki cricket team's supershtar (despite the fact that he is one of the *****iest players around) and thinks he is awesome because he commands a princely sum of 10 lakh rupees for every commercial he makes, which considerably exceeds a paki cricketer's average earnings. ian chappell is only stating the obvious here. i dont think any cricket expert has any respect for the guy. even the pakis are getting sick of him. wasnt wasim akram lamenting the fact that 'he has played 300 matches and still hasnt' learned' ? thats also a fair point

You gotta feel sorry for the ppl living in Oz :(( We have to put with him and his crew of Slater, Healy etc every summer. They are so one eyed bogans sometimes :headshake: Everything they say is for Australia or simply against the opposition. No respect at all.

Who is Afridi ? He's a talentless, cheating, under achieving, over hyped, egotistical maniac. Of all the commentators in world cricket, not ONE had the balls to say this. I am actually pissed that it took SO LONG and that it took Chappel to treat this ratbag with the respect (more like contempt) he deserves.

We all know that. What did Chappel get out of having that rant? Nothing. It just made him look like sore loser who picks on retard like Afridi for the stupidest reasons.

I dont see much wrong with Ian Chappell's comments: 1) Afridi is crazy & idiotic - CHECK Not much to discuss here, everyone knows this. Chappell simply spoke his mind. 2) Afridi's celebration reeks of selfishness - CHECK Come on, the guy celebrates as if he has conquered the opponents after every wicket. He did this even with Canada, Kenya & Zimbabwe. Typical Pakistani cricketer who hogs those glory moments and bigs up himself. Once again, Ian C is on the money. 3) Ponting will punish Pakistan for the Sydney test. This is just Chappell's opinion, does not come across as distasteful. Based on hindsight, Chappelli would have wished he had not made this comment. But this is not a malice-ridden comment. Overall I dont see why non-Pakistanis are upset with Chappell's comments.
When I am watching a cricket match, I would ideally want my commentators to be talking about the game and it's analysis. Yeah, Afridi is crazy. Most people know it.....why do I need the commentator to keep harping on it, specially when his team is getting whooped by the same Afridi. Yes, Afridi's celebration style is messed up. It's between him, his team, and the team management. How does Ponting punishing Pakistan for the Sydney test not come across as bitter and distasteful? Firstly, the Sydney test has been cleared by the ICC. Now there might be things which were wrong with the match, but given this clearance it's best for a dignified commentator to not harp about it on air. And what's this punishing business? Ponting is some God who will hand out spankings to the Pakistan team for being naughty boys at Sydney? The bitter old fool kept whining on an inconsequential thing like the team huddle. I am not paying $129 to listen to some senile old fools' prejudicial ramblings.
