fineleg Posted March 23, 2011 Posted March 23, 2011 March 24th - most likely Tendulkar's last Intl ODI. Hats off to a legend! No matter what happens, he has been terrific for Team India. Its just sad that the bowlers, fielders, and lower middle order batsmen cannot put up a good show. Else Team India can go further in the tournament.

He's stayed away from making any comments about his retirement from ODI's to make sure India's journey towards glory doesn't get distracted by any means!

It is quite certain that he'll retire after WC. The ODIs after the WC are meaningless for him.

yoda Posted March 23, 2011 Posted March 23, 2011 I don't see why he has to quit ODIs after the WC. He hasn't even hinted that he might stop playing ODIs, has he? I can understand him leaving if we win the WC, but if we lose may be will continue playing and try for the next. :dontknow:

Two possibilities - either India win the World Cup or they go crashing out before that. If they win, I think there is a small chance that Sachin may announce his retirement from ODIs because that would truly be a high to go out on. If not, I don't think he is going to announce his ODI retirement just yet. He is good enough to play anyway, he has the fire of a young boy still in his heart, he lives and breathes cricket. I am sure he will announce his retirement from any format well in advance to allow everybody to give him an appropriate farewell from that format. Let's not compare him with Akhtar, Murali and others. Each person is different. Personally I'd like him to win the World Cup AND not announce his retirement. As long as he is performing and he still wants to play, I see no reason why he should retire. Other people putting pressure on him (whether media or others) should just back off.

Maybe we should let him know that we are up against a deadline!” This, from an ad agency which has based a whole campaign around the magic century. Advertisers, journalists, ad companies, fans, who have bought tickets for all the India games in the hope of being present when history is made and thereby being handed a readymade story for their grandchildren, columnists, Tendulkar-watchers around the world, the Indian team, push-cart businessmen around stadiums hoping to make a killing on the big day, souvenir-hunters, souvenir-manufacturers, bookies offering odds on where the event will take place, politicians with their congratulatory messages at the ready, firecracker manufacturers, sports editors with special issues planned, young couples determined to get married on the big day, bureaucrats preparing to pull off a scam on the day when the whole nation’s attention is diverted elsewhere, everybody has been holding his breath. Everybody, but Sachin Tendulkar, that is. He seems unaffected by all the clamour and looks the calmest of the lot with the possible exception of the man living in a remote cave at the border of Germany and Poland who is in hiding because no one told him Hitler’s war is over. What if Tendulkar, having broken every record there is (well, almost), has decided to play a trick on all of the above? Perhaps he fancies the number 99. After all, that is Don Bradman’s Test average. Pretty depressing to go and watch match thinking it could be his last one..:nervous: I've never cried over a cricket match, but India getting dumped out of the World Cup with Sachin's dream remaining unfulfilled because of his inept teammates and finishing with ODI cricket forever would probably be the first time I do so :((
