"Ponting is our greatest one-day player and the second-best player to have played for Australia since Donald Bradman" - Dean Jones

I rated Hayden better than Ponting
 Hayden was a home bully. Ponting is streets ahead. There is no comparison. Ponting also made some runs against the WI attack of the 90s while Hayden was a walking wicket.

Border and Chappell have definitely contributed more as batsmen to Austrlian cricket than Ponting ever did. Ponting as a batsman has been a five year phenomena - 2002-2006. In this time period he was scoring heavily. Take these five years out and Ponting's numbers are mediocre. And these five years were at the time, when Australian team could easily have done without Ponting's heavy scoring as they had so many stars in team. Border raised his level of game when Australia was going thru re-building phase (between 83-89 he scored at an average of 60) while Ponting dropped his game when team was going thru re-building phase ( between 2007 and today, Ponting averages 41). Chappell's contibution has also been great but his relative lack of success outside Australia puts some question marks. Still I would rate him higher than Ponting.
That rebuilding phase which Border played was during his peak years as a player and the rebuilding which Ponting is go thru is during his last years of his career there is big difference.

The greatest ODI player for Australia is definetely Ponting...Gilchrist was good but ponting was more consistent and reliable as the stats speak for themselves. If Gilchrist added value with his keeping Ponting was the captain and also one the finest fielder in the side...His fielding is often overlooked imho....with respect to ODI. As far as test matches go I would have to go with Warne...Warne is to Spin bowling what Bradman or later Sachin were to batting or Jonty Rhodes to fielding...

I know that. But perception that one gets is Ponting made merry when all greats were around and there was hardly any pressure on Ponting. Everybody was scoring tons of runs and so did Ponting. But as soon as that comfort of having greats around was gone, Ponting's form fell apart in drastic fashion. I believe particularly it has got to do with the fact that Ponting's batting has been unidimensional and has been all about attack. You can't imagine him playing a Sachin's Sydney 2004. Now even Australians don't put him in same category as Sachin and Lara.
