Yes, he is Australia's best ever ODI player. However, the best Australian player since Bradman? Give me a break! If we're talking about players, then Shane Warne is the best Australian player after Bradman. And even if we talk about the best Aussie batsman after Bradman, Ponting doesn't come second (at least in my books). For me the greatest Australian Test batsman after Bradman is Greg Chappell. And I'm pretty sure most experianced fans will agree. Then comes Ricky Ponting and Neil Harvey, who would both share the 3rd spot. Where would you place Ponting as a Test batsman among Australia's former greats?

Ponting is certainly a better batting talent than Border, no doubt about that. As for ODI cricket, Ponting, in my opinion, edges out Jones, Bevan and Gilchrist comfortably. Bevan's average is inflated by bloody 67 'not out' innings, add to that he has a much inferior strike rate compared to Ponting. Jones was a great ODI player, but Ponting edges him out due to the longevity factor. As for Gilchrist, he averages a lot less than Ponting, despite his incredible strike rate.

Of course all these ratings become a bit subjective when you have so many players that have played who are so good. Hard to argue against the players identified in the list for the categories.

Yeah, that sounds about right - particularly Border, who played in a really difficult era for Australian cricket against some fearsome bowlers. We've seen how badly Ponting has struggled since the greats retired (and nothing like that quality of bowling) - Border carried an even worse team for years, astonishing mental strength.

So, yes he is best after Bradman amongst Aussies for sure. However, it is early to call on that unless he retires immediately. It would be need to be seen how he re-emerges after the present dark period of his career. If he can emerge positively he will definitely deserve the credit but in case he falters and retires then I might consider Greg and Border better than him. But it is still early to call as I dont think he would retire as of now. I do not like Ponting but he is still one of contemporary batting legends and no one can deny that.

ganeshran Posted March 27, 2011 Posted March 27, 2011 We Indians have historically been biased against Ponting, maybe because he came within striking distance of Tendulkar. So we might dispute his greatness, but he would be viewed differently by the Australians who admire the very traits (ruthlessness, aggression) that we hate. He did lead the most dominant side in cricket since the windies of the 80s.

They could not take the pressure of captaincy and even when Lara did he did himself no favours
