Ultimate_Game Posted April 4, 2011 Posted April 4, 2011 I was reading an article on cricinfo from a SL writer regarding how "doubt did SL in" and the bugger took plenty of shots at Indians such as "Successive finals are not something powerhouses like South Africa, or even India can boast of," or "Yesterday Dhoni guided a bunch of hitherto underachieving superstars to world dominance". So I looked at all the major ODI/T20 tourneys to look at our record in these finals and compare it with others. I only looked at global ODI/T20 where at least top 6 nations participated as anything less wouldn't mean it was a global tournament, and that's the reason I had to exclude tourneys such as "Hero Cup" where India beat likes of WI, SL & SA or Titan Cup where we beat Aus & SA, or even Asia Cup which we have won 5 times IIRC. Based on the qualification criteria the following tourneys made the list... 10 World Cups from 1975 - 2011 6 Champions Trophy (1998, 2000, 2002, 2004, 2006, 2009) 3 T20 Cups Benson & Hedges World Championship of Cricket (1985) MRF World Series/ Nehru Cup (1989) Thus total tourneys - 21 And here's how various teams stack up... Ind - 2 world cups, 1 Champions Trophy (shared), 1 T20, Benson & Hedges WCC. Total - 5 Aus - 4 world cups, 2 Champions Trophhies. Total - 6 WI - 2 world cups, 1 Champions Trophy. Total - 3 Pak - 1 world cup, 1 T20, MRF Nehru cup. Total - 3 SL - 1 world cup, 1 Champions Trophy (shared). Total - 2 Eng - 1 T20. Total - 1 NZ - 1 Champions Trophy. Total - 1 SA - 1 Champions Trophy. Total - 1 Also, I looked at how many finals India reached and this is what I found... Reached 3 World Cup finals (Won 2), 1 T20 final (won 1), 2 Champions Trophy final (joint winner), reached Benson and Hedges WCC final (won) In nutshell we have reached the finals of major tourneys 7 times and have won/shared trophy 5 times! That's an incredible record to have by any means. I can only see Aus who has a better record with 4 world cups and 2 champions trophy. Rest don't even come close!!! So I can't even understand when ppl diss India or say we don't "perform" in finals. Historically we have been the 2nd most successful team in the shorter format.

Silva Posted April 4, 2011 Posted April 4, 2011 Yeah thanks for this. I was just thinking this the other day that only australia has won more important ODI tounaments, and unlike India they have yet to win world T20.
Ultimate_Game Posted April 4, 2011 Author Posted April 4, 2011 Historically we are second only to Aussies and hopefully we will address it in the future In fact the only two major finals we have lost are the World cup 2003 where we should have batted after winning the toss and Champions Trophy final against NZ where we were 142/0 in 26 overs and only ended up with 264, and even then had a chance when we reduced kiwis to 131/5 :(( Other than that we have won everything unlike some other countries who talk big but their teams' performances are not even close to what they claim.
