Prakat Posted April 5, 2011 Posted April 5, 2011 Remember that 334 run chase where Gavaskar just went into test mode... He made 36 runs after batting for 60 overs.. :hysterical: Misbah's hero! :hehe:
Texan Posted April 22, 2013 Posted April 22, 2013 WI beat India so badly in the series that followed. It was a sorry sight. 8-0 (5-0 in ODIs and 3-0 in tests) Reading this old thread again. Wonder how Dhoni got away with 0-8 now when Kapil couldn't get away with just one series against the top team in the world at that time.
Jersey #10 Posted April 23, 2013 Posted April 23, 2013 8-0 after '83 8-0 after '11 we have come a full circle! Gavaskar wanted to show the WI bowlers that they couldn't get him out in 60 overs so he played the most boring tuck tuck ODI in the history of the ball game to score only 36*.

That was in 1975 WC and against England, no?

The one we had now had question marks over their places in the team like Viru and GG.

No godfather ala Srini plus the Mumbai lobby in those days was way too powerful with NKP Salve group ruling the roost and they were firmly backing Gavaskar. Kapil was however back to captaining India again in 1987 WC and some conspiracy theories say the Mumbai lobby worked against him in the semifinal against England (Vengsarkar sitting out with a dodgy stomach, Sunny getting out on a duck etc)
Pagalpanti Posted April 23, 2013 Posted April 23, 2013 We were routed by angry West Indians :cantstop: . Still remember the kanpur massacre by Malcom Marshall. You couldn't really blame Kapil dev for that. He bowled like a champion in that series. Regardless of who was going to captain we were destined be roundly thrashed. One of the most nightmarish one dayer took place at Jamshedpur. Sportstar has the picture of Greenidge and Ricahrds with a title "Merciless two".. you gotta say they were merciless. http://www.espncricinfo.com/ci/engine/match/64220.html Richards made 149 in 99 balls.!! Now thats some pay-back :haha: And then we have Pakistani's who are seeking revenge since 1992 :cantstop:

bhumika Posted April 23, 2013 Posted April 23, 2013 Politics is what I heard from my dad. I heard Gavaskar was jealous of kapil and did something to undermine him. donno what happened. Even kapil recently said it is difficult for virat to manage a team of seniors.
singhprakash72 Posted April 23, 2013 Posted April 23, 2013 It was a trend that was common in those days ....Gavaskar lost his captaincy due to 3-0 loss to Pakistan and then Kapil took the reign with a decent series in WI (2-0 loss was not bad in 80's) and WC 83 victory but then WI series was complete Whitewash both in Test and ODI. Gavaskar then took over for 84'series in Pakistan which was a dullest of draws (which was counted as Win in India) and then had England series (2-1 loss)....But I believe before the WCC tournament he had confirmed it will be his last outing as captain and that he will move down the order (started that in ODI).
Texan Posted April 23, 2013 Posted April 23, 2013 because we had some options then. The one we had now had question marks over their places in the team like Viru and GG. That is pretty much the story right now. There is absolutely no other worthy option. Virat is too raw and hasn't even established himself in the Test team.
Spiderguy252 Posted April 24, 2013 Posted April 24, 2013 Look at the complacency at the start of this thread, right after the CWC win. "What if they had faced the present batting line-up", etc. etc.

Gavaskar took over for the 1984 Asia Cup in Sharjah itself which Kapil skipped.
singhprakash72 Posted April 24, 2013 Posted April 24, 2013 Gavaskar took over for the 1984 Asia Cup in Sharjah itself which Kapil skipped. Yeah not sure why he skipped that one but I believe it was first Asia cup, which India won and then Aussie too came for another One day series which we lost. In Sunny's autobiography he mentioned that rift between him and Kapil developed in that period because of selector's clandestine ways of communicating with players...like after 1982-3 series SG came to know Kapil was Kaptan for WI series from news daily and I believe he had a terrible series there.
