Also, its other shows apart from news - the weekly Documentary, Walk the Talk, Just Books, NewsNet, Gadget Guru etc are quite good.

And there must be a significant number of people which takes it seriously. Peddling superstition and sensationalising news is simply not on. They are not an entertainment channel, but a news channel which is supposed to be truthful, credible and objective while showing news. But India TV fails on all three of those counts.

Fabricated programing. Fabricated public opinions etc etc. ANd back then, people say it wasn't even entertaining. And it was the only option back then. So in a span of a few decades we've gone from state TV spewing nonsense to private channels doing the same. :D If anything news channels are more balanced now. Also, India TV may highlight celeb news or mythology or whatever, because it sells. I think as S=G mentioned, they were issued a show cause notice once. But that was something to do with copyright infringement and not because the veracity of the news. I completely share your views on India TV. But banning it is plain wrong. And unconstitutional. Nopes. That was because they (and a few other channels also) were constantly showing Bhoots, HimManavs and various kinds of Babas and Swarg ki Seedhi type of programs. You might have noticed that since the last few months these type of programs have become very rare on Indian news channels (except India TV). Now as and when the TV regulatory authority comes into effect these things would hopefully stop.

India TV objectively and credibly make a truthful attempt to air programs that sensationalize. I would give them that much.

These bans would never work: India TV would turn to Bharat TV or whatever. What are you going to do then?

Its not with the India TV name or the management that my issues are with. Its with the content. As long as the government explains to India TV in no uncertain terms that this kind of content is totally unacceptable and they need to stop, it would be just as good,

Nothing better than that. I don't watch it 24*7 so don't know what people are talking the channel being biased and stuff, but it doesn't bring and bull crap like 2 hours dedicated to some funny talk shows and stuff. It's a news channel and just shows some news.

The freedom of press is applicable to all the news media which allows them to self regulate and publish what they want to and keep government interference to the minimum. I have very rarely come across govt taking draconian steps to curb the media because it usually backfires As long as there are news houses like Hindu, NDTV, IBN which although are biased in their own way, do not publish content which can be refuted or discredited, any interference by the govt will be totally unnecessary and I would be first one to protest if it happens But India TV is not such a news channel, they are using the press freedom available to them and showing programmes which have absolutely nothing to do with the news at all. Hence the govt or the regulatory authority must explain to them that either improve your news reporting or rebrand yourself as an entertainment channel and dish out whatever crap you like.

All my indian friends say that it is the lowest of low channels in the country.. But then why is it still running and prolly making a profit?

They arm twist broadcasters into letting the DD family show live events/programs in return for broadcasting licenses. They have been doing it ever since cable channels were introduced in this country and have so far managed to get stay orders. That is what we should be up against, and not the trivial issue of pseudo news India TV. :whack:

You and I know India TV is bad and not worth going to for news because we have other sources of news. All Hindi news channels in India are pretty much equally pathetic and the majority of our country gets their news from the Hindi channels. They don't understand the English on NDTV and do not have access to the internet to go to NY Times to verify news. Thus the need for a strong regulatory body and regulations to ensure that the majority of our population is not being fed lies in the name of news.
