saneindian Posted April 14, 2011 Posted April 14, 2011 Chetan Sharma was certainly quicker than PK. Prasad's strong point was his height. PK is a good swing bowler but if we want to stay at no.1 for long' date=' we need to raise our bar in terms of pace bowling.[/quote'] PK is a better bowler than venky or Chetan. Simple. As for the bolded part, I hope by "raising the bar" you don't mean picking anyone who bowls one delivery over 145 kmph. You need to look at skills of a bowler as well. PK through his ODI performances on picthes with swing and seam has shown that he has got enough to trouble the best and definitely deserves a chance ahead of others in tests. Not taking him to SA was a criminal joke and hope thats not repeated in the upcoming away tours.
CSK Fan Posted April 14, 2011 Posted April 14, 2011 he is not unfairly labelled a new ball bowler because it is a proven fact in domestic cricket. He has proved it many a times in FC matches after 10-15 overs. In England too' date=' ball does not swing always. We cannot have a bowler who will be useful for only first 15-20 overs or whenever the ball starts swing and otherwise he will just be a passenger on the field.[/quote'] One of the chief challenges India has had is taking early wickets. And you are spekaing as if Sree/RP etc, are demons with the ball after first 15-20 overs, they are equally useless. I wouldnt right off Praveen without giving him a chance
CSK Fan Posted April 14, 2011 Posted April 14, 2011 Anderson is not good in ODIs where ever it is. He is a better test bowler now. But you can claim Praveen's test credientials without him being given a single chance in a test match? Double standards. BTW IMO Praveen can be our Asif like bowler in tests

Its the combination which works more often than not...We should look to have quick as well as swing and accurate bowler in the team. PK is good but he only can swing the ball. There is nothing much he can do after that because of lack of pace that is why I favor for a combination in which we can have bowler who can swing the new ball and some one who can use the old ball and is not afraid to bowl bouncers.

Yes I agree that we need to have the right combination. My ideal squad would include Zaheer, Praveen, Sree as the swing bowlers with Ishant/Munaf as the seam bowlers that would generate bounce. The competition would really be between Praveen/Sree as Zaheer/Ishant would get the to be in the final eleven.

We pretty much know exactly what to expect from Sree. One excellent spell in two/three tests surrounded by rubbish. At least with Praveen we know his history in ODIs indicates whenever the balls swings he's accurate, consistent and gets wickets. That means two spells at least (one with the new ball, another with the 2nd new ball) where PK would be right on target. And even when the ball stops swinging we know Praveen is at least more economical than Sree who routinely gives away at least one boundary ball an over.
Lord Posted April 14, 2011 Posted April 14, 2011 Zak,Sree,PK should be our attack in England with Umesh Yadav on the bench

p3000g Posted April 14, 2011 Posted April 14, 2011 Yes Praveen will be a good asset in England under swinging conditions.. He along with Munaf should form the ideal backup for Zahee and Ishant .. Ishant should be Zaks new ball partner .. Definitely not sreesanth.. Umesah Yadav/Deepak Chahar/Varun Aaron should be in the fifth seamers spot time to give them a break .. Wish RP Singh was fit and in form
Fontaine Posted April 14, 2011 Posted April 14, 2011 Ishant in final XI?why?would prefer both Sree n PK to him Because we need at least one bowler who can hit the deck and get good pace and bounce as they'll be periods when the ball doesn't swing. Obviously if Ishant isn't fit or in form then we would need someone else but to go with just three swing bowlers isn't a great idea.
Fontaine Posted April 14, 2011 Posted April 14, 2011 See the difference in Ishant now? A lot of these IPL pitches are actually prepared by Australian etc curators which is why you see a lot more grass/bounce. Ishant looks a completely different bowler in these conditions getting great bounce from GOOD length deliveries rather than having to resort to a short length. And he looks to have (more or less) fixed some of the issues he was having with his wrist behind the ball.
Fontaine Posted April 14, 2011 Posted April 14, 2011 Ishant's 2nd over: 1st delivery 150kph with excellent bounce 2nd delivery 151 seaming in 4th delivery 151 around off stump final delivery 146 The guy looks in very very good form. 3rd IPL game I think where he looks fresh and ready to go.
p3000g Posted April 14, 2011 Posted April 14, 2011 Praveen Kumar reminds me of the aussie bowler of the 90s: Damien Fleming Similar action, run-up and delivery.. Both good outswing bowlers.. Maybe Damien was a shade quicker

I think Most bowlers have better averages in odis than in test cricket
Show_stopper Posted April 15, 2011 Posted April 15, 2011 Praveen? Please he will fizzle out and become irrelevant once the shine is off the ball. Evn in ODIs he is practically useless after bowling about 6 overs first up. With all due respect to PK...comparisons with Asif would be an insult to Asif. For one thing Asif relies on seam and Praveen on swing. There have been pretty successful swing bowlers- Hoggard, Pathan, Vaas, Sidebottom(all quicker than PK)- but they invariably fizzle out/lose their touch and even during the best of times they are periods in the game when they are practically useless.
Sid Posted April 15, 2011 Posted April 15, 2011 I will not like to be fooled with Ishant's 150kmph ,he bowled a very good spell before leaving to SA against NZ and in SA he turned out to be our worst bowler. Praveen Kumar anyday ahead of these so called phaasssttt bowlers, the guy has skill to move it both ways ,its time we make use of it in test cricket.
Cricket Tragic Posted April 15, 2011 Posted April 15, 2011 Sree isn't useless with the old ball. He can reverse swing the ball at decent pace. Remember his comeback test against SL?

He looks much better now.
msb1991 Posted April 19, 2011 Posted April 19, 2011 He absolutely cannot debut in England. If the BCCI want him in England, he has to play some Tests against West Indies. We cannot have people debuting in England, imo.
