Do you think we deserve a tag of "bad fielding side" anymore?

Even Sri Lanka's fielding is miles better than any other sub-continent team. Forget about comparing it with teams like Aussies and SA.
India's fielding is much better than sri lanka. SL has played so many games with india in past 2 years , all I can say is they are pants when you put a bit of pressure on their fielders. Virat and gauti chased 300+ for us in kolkata and the main reason was their sloppy fielding . Its just not about throwing your bodies , its about getting your throws right when batsmen put you under pressure. I admit munaf and nehra are bad but rest are good and they field like champions when they are challanged , in crunch matches , crucial situations. Kohli , Yuvi , Raina are top fielders.sachin gauti are good on boundaries. Viru is good in slip and short cover .. so most of the time we get it right by putting right man at right place Well I feel pakistan's fielding is as good as bangladesh and afghanistan.

Yes, we are an average fielding side, if not bad fielding side. Plz dont confuse the Indian team with the Mumbai Indians.
Please keep retarded comments like this confined to the IPL forum - it was opened with a purpose and reason.

The picture is mixed. have fielding and running between wickets improved compared to the days of sidhu, manjrekar and vengsarkar? yes. there are more better fielders than just azhar and jadeja. However the attitude of some of the youngsters shows the problem is far from disappearing. The lieks of saurabh tiwary, ojha , rp singh have huge issues. At the grass roots level, youngster need to be drilled that they have to do everything to make a team win on the field and fielding is an important part of it. if they think cricket is about scoring a 100 and acknowledging the crowd, then such players are still going be there. i am especially unhappy with the bowlers. all they offer is occasional good bowling under helpful conditions. bad fielding, bad throwing, weak on flat wickets. too litle to the table. can't they find better players who can really bowl?

Care to elaborate or justify the statement? India's fielding steps up when it matters just like it did in the 3 knockout games in the WC. I am not talking about just 1 game, India were pretty good in all the 3 games with no dropped catch in ANY of these games and decent ground fielding. SL on the other hand 2 bad fielding efforts out of 3 - one against Eng where Morgan was dropped 4 TIMES!!! If it had been against a stronger opponent SL would have lost. And in the final we all saw who stepped up to the plate. There's no point saying "Team A is better fielding side than Team B" if Team A doesn't step up to the plate when it really counts. As for Tests as someone has already mentioned India is a very safe fielding unit who doesn't drop too many catches, which is essentially what counts the most. No point in diving around and save a few boundaries if you drop crucial catches. Indians may not dive around much or save a "few extra runs" but you won't see too many dropped catches - at least not 4-5 in a game for sure. As long as India takes their catches and fields decently in the field the Indian team would be just fine

How are we going to do that ? Most of the grounds on which kids play at a very early age are not well groomed. If you dive on those grounds, you might be out for days hurt. The condition of outfield is not at all good. It might be better at some parks but rest it is very hard to imagine people diving left right. I think the development at grass root should be focused on building and maintaining better outfields.

i think there is no point arguing that whether we are better than SL or any other team. I dont care where we rank as long as we keep getting better. Fact is that we are not the best in the world and we need to benchmark against the best. Some ways to do this would be *recognize good fielding by whatever means possible. Have more karbon kamal catch like awards. I remember long time back ina tournament number of runs saved/lost used to be tracked. Have a green cap for leading run saver. jonty rhodes' biggest contribution to the game was making fielding a glamororus aspect of cricket. *invest in good fielding coaches at domestic levels. NCA should conduct fielding clinics/camps similar to MRF pace academy. *the packed schedule really does not help as bowlers are reluctant to throw themselves around for fear of injuries. Should bowlers be allowed time off equal to the number of overs they bowl and instead have fielding super subs.

Like some one said before in the same thread, good fielding is not only diving around and taking spectacular catches, the most important part is good flat throw, not dropping catches, fielding aggressively at boundary line, not let batsman convert singles into doubles. In this regards we have done fine. In the words of Ravi Shastri its all about doing the basics right.

I dont understand these players get paid so much why dont they do hard work , why dont they use technology in order to get better in field ..... In My view, indian cricketers are suffering from bad fielding its not becoz they are Old enough to field but the thing is they are not awared of proper technique , lack of throwing technique, lack of knowledge how to sprint and slide , when they come across it would be far easy and enjoyable.
