Bradman99 Posted April 28, 2011 Posted April 28, 2011 India's newly-appointed coach Duncan Fletcher got a taste of the challenges he faces when two senior former players said a fellow countryman should have got the job instead. Fletcher, a former Zimbabwe all-rounder who rose to prominence during his eight-year stint as England coach, was awarded a two-year contract on Wednesday by the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI). Kapil Dev and Sunil Gavaskar, former India captains and influential voices in the cricket establishment, expressed displeasure over Fletcher's appointment. "Who is Duncan Fletcher?" Dev told the Hindustan Times newspaper. "I would like to see Venkatesh Prasad and Robin Singh (former India players) as coaches of the India team. Not because they are Indians but because they did a great job at the T20 World Cup in 2007." Gavaskar said former India all-rounder Mohinder Amarnath, who played a key role in guiding the team to their first World Cup win in 1983, should have been picked. "Someone like Amarnath would have been a better choice for the simple reason that the core of the India team today is from the Hindi-speaking belt," he told the NDTV news channel. "He would have got on brilliantly with this group as well as the seniors. It would have been a lot easier for Amarnath to understand and interact with the players. "There is a perception and a wrong one that an Indian (coach) can be influenced and that he will get involved in politics. You are presuming that he cannot be a strong person." Apologies if this has already been posted.. But I have to say I agree with him completely.
NareshK Posted April 28, 2011 Posted April 28, 2011 "Someone like Amarnath would have been a better choice for the simple reason that the core of the India team today is from the Hindi-speaking belt," he told the NDTV news channel. Its because of reasoning like this that nobody prefers Indian coaches. They can never leave their bias and prejudice aside.
satyam1729 Posted April 28, 2011 Posted April 28, 2011 Apologies if this has already been posted.. But I have to say I agree with him completely. Tbh , they don't select Indian coach because , Indian coach would be accused of biased in selection and will get into controversy.
Mamu Posted April 28, 2011 Posted April 28, 2011 Apologies if this has already been posted.. But I have to say I agree with him completely. I don't. Dev and Gavaskar are completely out of synch with reality. Both are living in the past. Dev sometimes makes sense, but he too goes off the radar -- lot of times. Gavaskar well -- the less said the better about him. I have no idea how is even let to do commentary with his asinine views and theories.
Sooda Posted April 28, 2011 Posted April 28, 2011 Yes understanding and interaction is all well and good but how about tactical know how and general coaching ability, not to mention a ton of experience...
Ramzz Posted April 28, 2011 Posted April 28, 2011 Wasn't Gavaskar in the committee that picked Chappel and overlooked Amarnath?
Karan114 Posted April 28, 2011 Posted April 28, 2011 I don't. Dev and Gavaskar are completely out of synch with reality. Both are living in the past. I have no idea how is even let to do commentary with his asinine views and theories. Agree entirely with your assessments of both.
Bradman99 Posted April 28, 2011 Author Posted April 28, 2011 I just don't like it when a side looks to other coutnries ALL the time to fill their coaching role. It's not how it should be, in fact I think that the coach should have to be of that nationality in all honesty.

Who would you prefer : Kirsten or Chappell as the coach of OZ. :--D
philcric Posted April 28, 2011 Posted April 28, 2011 What are the teams that Amarnath has coached till date ?

Ram Posted April 28, 2011 Posted April 28, 2011 I am not sure about Dev, but I am almost certain Sunny is just playing. He’s too intelligent to know that his theory about a native-Hindi speaker as coach wouldn’t fool even a 2nd grader, given that the successful tenures in Indian cricket history were under two foreign coaches (Wright and Kirsten). They probably want Duncan to not feel too comfortable and cosy upfront. People perform at their best when they have uncomfortable. But reading about Duncan in the press and the testimonials of cricketers he coached, he comes across as an unbelievably smart/self-aware person. I am sure he isn’t going to be fazed by any of this.
Bradman99 Posted April 28, 2011 Author Posted April 28, 2011 Ok I agree that is disrespectful of Dev to say this but I agree with what he's trying to say in that an Indian should be given the chance at the job. That's just my opinion.

Remember till about 10 years -- the f'ing coaches almost always had their Point of View -- completely enforced, usually leading to allegations of nepotism -- rightly or wrongly. With foreign coaches -- at least -- we can safely assume he is neutral and is doing for the best of the team. Now I am not alleging that Robin and Prasad are bad. In fact I love Robin, but I am afraid they have not been exposed to Coaching Ethics -- from a professional coaching manual -- enough to do the job good enough. Not to mention -- a lot of wannabe local coaches are looking up at Kirsten and Wright and are saying -- oh yeah we need to do this to be successful. Now as more and more times they are getting denied the opportunities -- the more they will strive harder to match up to these foreign coaches. This in itself will improve the "Coaching System" in India. Give it time, may be about another 10 -15 years. Not to mention -- Pure Clean Hearted guys like Ganguly, Kumble Prasad, Srinath will have to establish themselves start dictating terms to the Board and hopefully will draw the line as to how the Indian Cricket should proceed forward. These guys will be followed by SRT (hopefully he gets involved in Indian Cricket), Dravids and Laxmans -- who even after they retire will continue to be involved in the planning of Indian Cricket going forward. We did not have guys like these before.
Guest Gunner Posted April 28, 2011 Posted April 28, 2011 Ok I agree that is disrespectful of Dev to say this but I agree with what he's trying to say in that an Indian should be given the chance at the job. That's just my opinion. Look as long as South India is a part of India we can never have an Indian coach. It is better to have a neutral foreigner.

That's just my opinion. Tried and failed in the 90s. India started improving their overseas record only after Wright was hired.

It's just always been of my opinion that it's nice for the coach of the team to be of that nationality. However, maybe I was outta line here, don't understand enough about the situation.
