Also good to see that one match IPL wonders are not selected but a quality team is sent instead. I dont want us to lose our ODI rankings. Sensible team sent. Good to see Amit Mishra and Ashwin and wont be surprised if they perform well and Bhajji has to rest for a long time now unless he comes back to form. :winky: So, the actual rests are only Sachin, Dhoni, Viru (injury), Zak and Bhajji. Sensible rests and good to see everyone was not rested like was the case in similar scenarios in the past.

putrevus Posted May 13, 2011 Posted May 13, 2011 Bhajji is not a fool, he knows very well if he had skipped this tour he might as well forget his place in Indian team. That said he does not do well there in odis , others should get a chance in tests.Looking at the performance of WI batsmen against Pakistani spinners that too some one like Hafeez he should do well there if not he needs to make way for others who can do better job than him.
jairamesh Posted May 13, 2011 Posted May 13, 2011 Good selection, certainly sends out a strong message that IPL is NOT the key corollary to national selection, but Ranji and one-day performances is what counts. Before pushing the likes of Yadav, Aaron, and Dinda into international cricket, the pitch curators need to provide them with decent pitches with bounce and swing. It will also set the men apart from the boys in terms of batting.

Irfan should have been there instead of Vinay Kumar. Saurabh Tiwary should have been there in place of Saha.

Ultimate_Game Posted May 13, 2011 Posted May 13, 2011 Decent team but disappointed about two selections... 1. Amit Mishra - Rahul Sharma should have been given a chance against WI. Generally I wouldn't go based on IPL performances but Rahul has been in such great form and considering he is very similar to Kumble makes him an ideal candidate especially against WI. He's at the peak of his confidence and what better team to blood a youngster than WI? 2. Wriddhiman Saha - I am sorry but the guy is not an intl class wk batsman. Maybe selectors should have gone with either Rayudu or Uthappa as I can't honestly see a batsman like Saha coming in at 6 for India. This will bring back memories of Mongia coming in at 6 :(( If selectors didn't want to go with Uthappa or Rayudu then Dinesh Karthik was a better choice than Saha. Hopefully Parthiv will play all the games and we won't see Saha strutting out at 6

Saha is their only as back-up w/keeper, he is unlikely to get games unless parthiv gets injured. Tiwary I think was unlikely last time selected, is he hardly got a game, and when he did he only had a few deliveries to play and remained not out on all occasions.

Prgahyan Ojha was far and away, the most economical Indian bowler during 2009-2010 time-period, when all the other Indian bowlers were spanked to all parts of the ground in successive home ODI series on some REALLY flat pitches. If you’re picking an Indian squad with 3 spinner, he’s an automatic pick for the 3rd spinner spot, ahead of Bhajji and Aswhin. However, if his physical conditioning (he’s far and away, the Indian cricketer in the worst shape, IMO), then the next automatic choice should be Jadeja. Jadeja fell out of favor because his batting failed to meet expectations, but he was already the 2nd most economical Indian bowler, behind Ojha, in the same time frame. Plus, he’s a stunning fielder to boot, with safe pair of hands and a rocket arm. If that isn’t good enough, then his batting has shown signs of revival in the recent IPL. Why would you pick Amit Mishra, who was an unqualified failure during the time he was tried for India in ODIs, over both of these players, I have no idea. Vinay Kumar’s another curious case. He rose to prominence during the 2009-2010 Ranji season and some good performance in last year’s IPL. But IMO, his bowling is at best average. For you to be a successful ODI bowler, you forte must be skill first (pace, bounce, movement, line and length control) and then come the variations. But is somebody who relies ENTIRELY on variations alone, which is a huge risk. And as a batsmen, once you figure him out, then he’s easy pickings, as Cameron White showed when he walloped him all over the stadium, during the home ODI series before the WC. And why in the world has Saurabh Tiwary not been picked? The last time he was in the crease for India, he shared an unbeaten 100 run partnership with Yusuf Pathan to guide the team home in a chase of 315, after we were 180/4. What wrong has he done since then? The guy has already showed the he’s easily among the top 5 most promising batsmen for India in ODIs and he has been ignored? Even if you argue that Saha has been picked as the backup keeper, then Tiwary should have been picked ahead of Badrinath. I love my man Badri, but for all his performances over the years and his honest efforts, I would still focus on youth and have Tiwary picked ahead of him.
