1983-2011 Posted May 14, 2011 Posted May 14, 2011 Is Narendra Modi as popular outside Gujarat as he is in Gujarat. Would he be able to sustain a successful campaign if he stood as a BJP leader in 2014 General Elections.

Well most of the people to whom I interact in North India look Narendra Modi as non-corrupt, effective administrator, as a facilitator of business in a state with a deep commercial culture, and as a no-nonsense, law-and-order politician who looks after the interests of the Hindu majority. That's what his image is in cities I am not sure about villages.
Stuge Posted May 14, 2011 Posted May 14, 2011 I don't care much but Gujjuland is doing well under him as of now .
anotherhawkeye Posted May 15, 2011 Posted May 15, 2011 He'll be good for India. In fact, IMO, he is what India needs. But he won't be able to win at the national level. End of story.
THX_1138 Posted May 15, 2011 Posted May 15, 2011 He'll be good for India. In fact, IMO, he is what India needs. But he won't be able to win at the national level. End of story. why is that? i dont see the nation headed anywhere but north, so what dire need does he satisfy. just curious since his supporters often tout him as a visionary of sorts. i fail to see his purported brilliance.
Sachin=GOD Posted May 15, 2011 Posted May 15, 2011 No. He campaigned extensively in UP in Lok Sabha 2009 but was not effective. He campaigned very extensively in Maharashtra in the last Assembly elections there but the BJP lost poorly there. Also, he will not be acceptable to the coalition partners of the BJP - be it Shiv Sena or JDU or SAD or any others. Most importantly, whatever he does, the Ghodra incident will continue to haunt him forever and will always come in his way of national politics. Narednra Modi willl never ever be able to sustain a campaign as a National leader - he may join the Govt as a Minister if BJP comes to power but his chances of being the Leader are not high IMHO.
ganeshran Posted May 15, 2011 Posted May 15, 2011 Modi is one of the best prime ministerial prospects in India - forthright, strong administrator, incorruptible. Ironically what cemented his position at the state level will continue to haunt him at the national level. The 2001 riots are simply inexcusable. Whether you take it as incompetence or collusion or indifference, all three angles reflect badly on Modi. The taints of communal violence dont wash off that easily and it will seriously undermine his chances of becoming a national leader.
vipin Posted May 15, 2011 Posted May 15, 2011 He may be a good administrator and everything but his involvement in the massacre of muslims in Gujrat has left an indelible mark over his image. The Indian junta wouldn't trust such a personality to lead the country. And with more and more people coming out with proof to implicate him, I don't see him ever being the Prime Minister (Even if he is made the prime ministerial candidate). In fact its quite possible we see him lodged in a jail a few years later.

This . No coalition party will ever accept Modi as their PM candidate . I dont think BJP will win on their own majority any time soon . Whatever justification BJP tries to give Modi such as non-corrupt, effective administrator or anything else the Gujrat riots are such a shame on our nation that he will never be accepted as PM canditate by most .
asterix Posted May 15, 2011 Posted May 15, 2011 I don't think he aspires to become a national leader, leave alone becoming a PM. His focus is in Gujarat.
Sachin=GOD Posted May 15, 2011 Posted May 15, 2011 I don't think he aspires to become a national leader' date=' leave alone becoming a PM. His focus is in Gujarat.[/quote'] Oh no, he does have lots and lots of national aspirations and would certainly like to join national politics as soon as possible - he had said at the time of the last assembly elections in Gujarat that he would like to join National politics after the 50 years celebrations of Gujarat (which was in 2010) were over. So I'm very sure that come the 2014 Lok Sabha and he would jump into National politics. He wouldn't be accepted by allies is a different matter though.
ravishingravi Posted May 15, 2011 Posted May 15, 2011 ^No it doesn't matter what he wants. What matters is what can be sold to the people and what BJP high command thinks ? Without condoning his role, if any, in Gujurat riots, it is one of the more unfortunate dilemmas for India that he can't be PM. He is best leader in the country by proverbial mile

Sachin=GOD Posted May 15, 2011 Posted May 15, 2011 He maybe the best leader in India but certainly he is not the best person to lead a secular democratic nation like India . This. If the BJP comes to power I cannot under any circumstances see Modi being the leader. It will be either Arun Jaitley or Sushma Swaraj.
ravishingravi Posted May 15, 2011 Posted May 15, 2011 He maybe the best leader in India but certainly he is not the best person to lead a secular democratic nation like India . Best person, is also arguable to a large extent. Firstly it assumes his culpability in riots. Secondly, how are the muslims doing in Gujurat ? Last I checked a Mullah was removed from his post for praising Modi's work for muslims in Gujarat. I would rather not get into semantics of "secular" as long they can deliver governance. It is an overly abused term. BJP is a centre right party now. 90s are far gone. They have also evolved
ganeshran Posted May 15, 2011 Posted May 15, 2011 I cannot accept second rung leaders like Arun Jaitley or Sushma Swaraj as prime ministerial candidates. they simply dont have it in them. After Vajpayee, BJP never was able to produce someone with capability to lead a country.
Sachin=GOD Posted May 15, 2011 Posted May 15, 2011 ^I think its not about who has it in him to be a leader, rather its about who is acceptable to the public and the coalition and also the opposition - if Modi is projected as leader then a large majority of the public, the coalition partners and the entire opposition will be up in arms against him being leader. So I cannot see that happening. Someone like Arun Jaitley looks to be an obvious choice because he not only would be acceptable to everyone but is also an outstanding administrator. There's no better example than Dr ManMohan Singh - he is NOT a leader by any standards but he was acceptable to the party, coalition and well respected by the opposition so he became the PM.
saneindian Posted May 15, 2011 Posted May 15, 2011 Even though he is popular, the taint of 2002 riots will continue to haunt him. His mere presence in states with a significant Muslim population (UP, Bihar, Maharashtra, Bengal , AP etc that's nearly 50% of Lok Sabha seats) results in tactical voting by the Muslims and normally dooms his own party/coalition. I would say that someone like Nitish Kumar will have a better chance of leading the NDA in 2014 elections than Modi.
