New Delhi: DMK Rajya Sabha MP Kanimozhi has been arrested and sent to Tihar Jail today. The Delhi court hearing the 2G case rejected her bail application and ordered her immediate arrest on Friday afternoon. The bail plea of Kalaignar TV Managing Director Sharath Kumar was also rejected by Special CBI Judge O P Saini and he too has been taken to jail. Justice Saini said bail had been dismissed due to the magnitude of the crime and said given the seriousness of the allegations, he was unable to show any consideration to her being a woman. Kanimozhi's lawyer had argued that she should be given reprieve on the grounds that she was a woman and mother to a young child. Bail has not been granted to any of the accused in the case. Kanimozhi, who is the daughter of DMK chief M Karunanidhi, has been named as co-accused and has been chargesheeted by the CBI for allegedly accepting a Rs 214-crore bribe that was a part of India's largest swindle, the 2G scam. Her party MP and Dalit leader A Raja has been in Tihar since February, for allegedly planning and executing the 2G scam when he was Telecom Minister in 2008. Kanimozhi and Kumar hold 20 per cent stake each in Kalaignar TV, while former Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M Karunanidhi's wife and Kanimozhi's step mother Dayalu Ammal holds 60 per cent share. A CBI lawyer said the court had ordered that Kanimozhi and Sharath Kumar be produced in court tomorrow. Order on their bail plea had been deferred repeatedly. The last hearing on May 14 was a day after the results of the Tamil Nadu Assembly elections were announced. The DMK, which ruled the state for the last five years, got a severe drubbing. It's thus come as a double blow to the DMK and Karunanidhi - Kanimozhi is largely believed to be his favourite child. Kanimozhi had appeared before the court for the first time on May 6 complying with the summons issued to her after the second chargesheet filed by the CBI named her as an accused in the case. She was directed by the court to be personally present till her bail was decided upon. Kanimozhi was earlier granted exemption for May 12 and 13 as she and Sharath Kumar were to appear before the Income Tax office in Chennai. In court, noted lawyer Ram Jethmalani argued for Kanimozhi and blamed Raja for the wrongs attributed to her - he said she had neither signed any documents nor handled affairs of the television company. Kanimozhi had on one occasion remarked that "my misfortune is that I am Karunanidhi's daughter and an MP. I have 20 per cent shares in Kalaignar TV. Show me one overt act of mine which relates to the offence." The CBI, on the other hand, opposed her bail saying her "complicity" in the alleged bribe given to Kalaignar TV in the 2G scam is clear. "The transactions are nothing but the transfer of bribe money to Kalaignar TV. Kumar (MD of the channel) alone cannot be held responsible when a family is having the controlling shares," Special Public Prosecutor UU Lalit had said. http://www.ndtv.com/article/india/2g-scam-kanimozhi-arrested-sent-to-tihar-jail-107166

Good on the Court for not granting her bail. I don't care if these guys are punished or not. Get the freaking black money back to country and use it for poor. that will be best thing to come out this.

Why Tamil nadu remains one of the stupidest states in India alternating between Jayalalitha & M. Karunanidhi repeatedly with the all familiar court cases & acquittals is beyond me

It's like asking why people of India are the stupidest for alternating between Congress and BJP even though both parties are corrupt and inefficient. The 2G scam and CWG scam happened under Congress and all of India must be stupid for having voted for them. It all comes down to available choices, which isn't that great in most of states and the center.

That is the issue. Corruption is there in most states in India.

Having followed Tamil Nadu politics for ages I can tell you quite frankly I would pick Jayalalitha as CM every single day of the week. I agree that she made a mess of her first stint as CM but she is just overall a better leader and her second stint was gold. Karunanidhi on the other hand is a vile creature. He is racist and has used every crooked trick in the book to stay in TN politics for the last 50 odd years. The rise of this man from the back waters of South TN rivals that of Mao in China.

+1 Karunanidhi has done nothing except encouraging his family into politics and helping them to make lots and lots of $$$ and he has done all this absolutely shamelessly. He has supported all kinds of criminals in order to stay in power. Now finally I think this time if Jayalaitha does even a little bit of good work, it may be the end of the road for Karunanidhi because he is now too old and his sons will destroy the party because of infighting.

Two fundamental and deep rooted problems: 1. A mistaken belief that tamil people are racially different from others and that they were the original inhabitants of India and were driven south by so called Aryans. 2. Insane hatred for "aryan" languages aka Sanskrit and Hindi. These two ideas were rooted into the minds of the common tamil people in the late 50s by CN Annadurai (Founder of this DMK nonsense), Periyar and exploited thoroughly by Karunanidhi. Long ago TN had congress government with Kamraj as CM and back then this kind of divide in the minds of the people were minimal. However I also blame to some extent the Brahmin population of TN ("aryans") who took no effort to integrate with the overall tamil culture. It is a pity.

In my entire life time only 3 people have been elected CM of TN (Janaki don't count). Karuna's family think they are some sort of Kings of TN and the CM post should be passed down their bloodline.

IF this is the case, why would they elect Jaya who is a Bramin? The main reason behind only 2 parties, DMK and ADMK gets elected is because of the symbols. People are so attached to the "Rising Sun" and "Two Leaves". They don't care who is running for the post, if they are MGR's supporters they will vote for anyone running under "Two Leaves" symbol and if they are Karuna's supporters they will vote for anyone running under "Rising Sun" symbol. Also political affinity in TN is passed down the family, the children will vote for a certain party because the parents supported for them. I wish the whole political system changes and they bring something like how they have in US. They should have primaries where people elect who is going to represent their parties. They should not be nominated by some general comitee BS. People need to vote for the person and not for the political party. But this is never going to happen in my life time. I just want someone from a different party other than DMK and ADMK rule TN and get rid of this family politics.

Same in Punjab. It is either the Badal clan or the congress.
It sucks. Good people don't want to enter into this political mess. They don't have time for this BS. To become a politician in TN you'll have to start forming gangs and involve in rowdism from very young age. Then you develop from there to the partie's youth wing where you'll be the goons of the leader and kiss their ass like crazy. The better ass kissers will be promoted to councillors and so on till you reach the top. Now, would a college topper want to go thru this to serve his or her state? All the smart people get IT jobs and move on. These a holes have set things up so good that not half decent guy would want to enter into politics. How did this Raja guy become a minister? He was Karunas house boy and his job was to buy the provisions every month.

I had lost all hopes when I saw Rabri as Bihar cheif minister and Lalu a minister in central govt. Look how things have changed for that clown. I hope more and more people in India follow what people in Bihar and Orissa did.

Let me ask you a question - How much do you actually know about TN politics? Dont bother trying to answer this question coz i already know the answer. Her chequered past notwithstanding, J.Jayalalithaa (JJ) is one THE outstanding politicians of the county - Among the state's bureaucratic class (IAS,IPS officers), she's known as an administrator par excellence, often clocking 18+ hour work days. There are several anecdotes of her staying up until 12 am at her office, only to be back in her seat at 6 am the next day. I will come to her disastrous tenure between 1991-96 later, but her term as CM between 2001-06 was, in my mind, exceptional for several reasons. For starters, nobody, not ONE political pundit saw her victory coming. Every one expected that the DMK would buck the anti-incumbency trend and sweep back to power, but she stormed back into the state office in what i think is one of stunning political wins in Indian state political history. And when she did come back into office, she delivered some exceptional governance. For starters, the DMK regime, in the hope of retaining power, had doled out one freebie after another to the electorate. In an unprecedented move in Indian history, they even went to extent of declaring that all state employees will be elevated to pay-scales on par with central employees. That move completely bankrupted the state ex-chequer, forcing the world bank and IMF to put T.N in the black list of entities in risk of defaulting on their loans. When JJ came into power in 2001, she rolled back all the bloated perk schemes of the previous govt and declared an across the board pay freeze. When the state employees responded by striking from work, she did something that no other Indian politician has EVER done in Indian history - Overnight, she dismissed nearly 1,00,000 state employees, citing unapproved absence from work. JJ paid more attention to fiscal responsibility than anybody else, orchestrating a stunning turnaround in state finances. She introduced a slew of HUGELY unpopular reforms, increasing the price of everything from cooking gas to electricity. By the end of her tenure in 2006, not only did the state's finances come back into the black, it had also surged in the nationwide rankings chart in several categories. She also got a lot of credit for the manner in which she handled the aftermath of the South Asian Tsunami in 2005. To this day, people still talk about the way she responded to one of the BIGGEST natural disasters in the history of the planet. Having said all this, does she have a spotless record? Of course not. The whole of the country knows about her shocking corruption scandals, largasse and king-style lifestyle during her first tenure between 91-96. But i strongly believe she was inexperienced and was misguided and showed she's a quick learner, by not repeating any of the mistakes in her 2nd term. She has made other missteps as well, like introducing the anti-coversions bill, that literally made religious conversions in the state almost impossible, in a clear attempt to pander to the majority. She also went on an ill-advised witch-hunt of the DMK politicians right after assuming office in 2006 and got a lot of negative coverage for that. But to me, the only thing better a single term of JJ for T.N two terms of JJ for the state. I pray dearly that the T.N electorate buck the trend of last decades and give her two full terms. If that happens, i am confident that the state will make superb advances in all areas!
