kabira Posted May 23, 2011 Posted May 23, 2011 ^agree with Ram, TamilNadu is still top state in the country in terms of industrial growth and growth in other sectors and thats all due to Jaya's stint in 2001-2006. I hope Jaya goes after Karuna with full throttle and get rid of that B@stard once for all.
jaggadaku Posted May 23, 2011 Posted May 23, 2011 Same in Punjab. It is either the Badal clan or the congress. Its a case of lesser of the two evils, but I'll prefer Akali dal over the kaangress anytime
vvvslaxman Posted May 23, 2011 Posted May 23, 2011 Why Tamil nadu remains one of the stupidest states in India alternating between Jayalalitha & M. Karunanidhi repeatedly with the all familiar court cases & acquittals is beyond me There are no other strong contenders. It is like picking the less worse poison. But i hope DMK disintegrates into pieces because old man couldn't control the atrocities and mayhems caused by his family members.
ganeshran Posted May 23, 2011 Posted May 23, 2011 Karuppu Singam Captain Vijaykanth to the rescue in 2016 :isalute:

Ram Posted May 23, 2011 Posted May 23, 2011 Given her track record of fiscal responsIbiliy and fearless nature when it came to taking hugely unpopular decisions, I would even go to the extent of saying that JJ is clearly prime ministerial material. After all, when we had mediocre politicians like IK Gujral and Deve Gowda occupy that high office, this women towers head and shoulders ahead of them. Her tough, no compromising approach is what we need to address many of our crippling problems, including national security.
ganeshran Posted May 23, 2011 Posted May 23, 2011 ^ JJ is way too arrogant to be trusted with prime ministership. She is an able administrator but corrupt as well (not to DMK's level). Her problem is difficulty to get along with allies. She was spewing venom over Sonia Gandhi because of Congress not giving support for JJ to become PM. She also brought down Vajpayee's government too.
ravishingravi Posted May 23, 2011 Author Posted May 23, 2011 Don't mean to burst the JJ bubble, but to say her past is shady is an understatement. I also prefer her as CM to Karunanidi but.. http://www.rediff.com/news/jaya.htm To a point where SC said, Jaya as CM will set unhealthy precedent, this was for 2001 tenure http://www.rediff.com/news/2001/sep/04onkar1.htm "Ashok Desai, counsel for petitioner B R Chopra, questioned the validity of Jayalalithaa's appointment as chief minister, pointing out that she had been convicted in the TANSI case and the Madras high court, which was hearing her review petition, had only stayed the sentence, not the conviction. He questioned the manner in which Governor Fathima Beevi appointed her chief minister despite her disqualification by the Election Commission." "Anil Dewan, counsel for petitioner Pratap Singh Chautala, argued that never before had Article 164(4) been used to swear in a chief minister who had been disqualified under election law because of a conviction under the Prevention of Corruption Act. The cases only related to those persons who were qualified to contest elections but had lost from a constituency or not contested at all. He said the decision to appoint Jayalalithaa was wholly unconstitutional, arbitrary and subversive of the rule of law." So, just to draw the line, she was convicted , not alleged of corruption. Btw guess who was the mastermind in bringing her down. None other than Subramaniam Swamy. "The investigations led the DVAC to some startling revelations. For instance, while before she was Chief Minister, Jayalalitha's assets were worth Rs 2.01 crore, after five years in power, her assets were calculated to be disproportionate by Rs 66.65 crore. The probe into the assets began in June 1996, on the basis of a complaint filed by Subramanian Swamy." "The case of the prosecution is that while Jayalalitha along with her confidant, N. Sasikala and V.N. Sudhagaran, Sasikala's nephew, went on an acquisition binge between 1991 and 1996. They, the prosecution said, floated 32 business partnerships together, but there was very little activity that took place in these companies. And no Income Tax or Commercial tax was paid. In all, Jayalalitha and Sasikalaowned 11 properties (worth Rs 15.93 crore) and Jayalalitha's associates (held by them on her behalf) owned 109 properties (worth Rs 30.45 crore)." "Land sold for half price by Chief Minister Jaya to citizen Jaya: A foundry unit owned by the Tamil Nadu Small Industries Corporation (TANSI) was sold to Jaya Publications in 1992, at almost half the price quoted in guidelines. Bureaucrats who had opposed the sale of the property were transferred. Jayalalitha signed both the sale agreements and her company got pecuniary advantage to the tune of Rs 3.5 crore" "Quarry licences renewed, rules violated: Inwhat is known as the granite case, Jayalalitha, who was also Industries Minister, faces allegations of illegally renewing licences of nine quarries, causing a loss of Rs 12.05 crore to the State. The licences had been granted overruling protects of the Law Department and bypassing the Finance Department. Instead of tenders being called, nominations were issued. The scam surfaced when Dhyaneswaran, an alleged associate of Jayalalitha, was raided by Income Tax officers." "Besides these, there are a spate of corruption cases faced by Sasikala, Jayalalitha's closest associate and Chairperson of JJ TV. In one case, she is alleged to have paid $ 880,000 to two companies without seeking the RBI's permission and made a third payment to Intersputnik Moscow. In another, she is alleged to have deposited $342,000 in an NRI account in Malaysia." http://www.expressindia.com/ie/daily/19990428/iex28066.html I have not stated everything btw. Not presenting a case, just the facts. You know things are bad in India when this candidate is preferable to the incumbent.
Ram Posted May 23, 2011 Posted May 23, 2011 ^ I am not saying and never will say she's spotless. She had a disastrous first tenure from 91 to 96, no one is going to argue about that. But I truly believe the yardstick of judgment in this case should be her most recent term, which was from 2001 to 2006. And trust me, in this time period, she delivered stellar governance. I have already listed some hugely unpopular decisions she took for the sake of the state. That is just the tip of the iceberg. Under her administration, the State Electricity board turned in a profit for the first time EVER. And that partly because she made the incredibly brave decision to cut free electricity supply to all farmers in rural areas and made them pay for it. She implemented the Veeranam water scheme that bought water to Chennai and helped solve the perennial water-crisis that had afflicted the city for decades. And another achivement that she doesnt get as much credit that she deserves – It was under her term that the T.N police pulled of the Indian equivalent of killing Osama, by terminating the forest bandit Veerappan. Of course, in the interest of fairness, it has to be pointed out that, after the reversal in May 2004 general elections, she did reverse many of these reforms either partially or completely. But the fact remains this – As someone who lived in T.N during 2 terms of Karunanidhi and 2 terms of JJ, I can truly say that JJ is easily the more accomplished administrator. I am willing to bet that if the T.N people give 2 terms (which seems highly unlikely, because for some bizarre reason, they ALWAYS seem to vote out the incumbent), the state will easily figure among the top in the list of well administered states in India.
Ram Posted May 23, 2011 Posted May 23, 2011 ^ JJ is way too arrogant to be trusted with prime ministership. She is an able administrator but corrupt as well (not to DMK's level). Her problem is difficulty to get along with allies. She was spewing venom over Sonia Gandhi because of Congress not giving support for JJ to become PM. She also brought down Vajpayee's government too. I tend to agree. The sheer disdain with which she treats allies and other political parties will remain her bugaboo. But If you look at it from her perspective, these politicians are some hardened calcified criminals. You don’t go extending courtesies to these guys.
Zelig Posted May 23, 2011 Posted May 23, 2011 Both suck :dontknow: One of the main reasons for shortage of power in TN today is coz of Jaya lady. She built a grand total of ZERO nuclear power plants during her second term.

You need uranium thambi to fire up the plant atleast as per my understanding. PS: As far as our past history goes I don't thinkwe have commissioned a nuclear plant in 5 years in India ever before.

I also prefer her as CM to Karunanidi but.. http://www.rediff.com/news/jaya.htm Simple question, can you tell me for sure that the conviction was not obtained under political pressure from Karunanidhi (State CM at the time of the conviction)? I am not entirey confident about the conviction handed down by Madras HC (at the risk of being in contempt).

Guest Gunner Posted May 23, 2011 Posted May 23, 2011 In my entire life time only 3 people have been elected CM of TN (Janaki don't count). Karuna's family think they are some sort of Kings of TN and the CM post should be passed down their bloodline. IF this is the case, why would they elect Jaya who is a Bramin? The main reason behind only 2 parties, DMK and ADMK gets elected is because of the symbols. People are so attached to the "Rising Sun" and "Two Leaves". They don't care who is running for the post, if they are MGR's supporters they will vote for anyone running under "Two Leaves" symbol and if they are Karuna's supporters they will vote for anyone running under "Rising Sun" symbol. Also political affinity in TN is passed down the family, the children will vote for a certain party because the parents supported for them. I wish the whole political system changes and they bring something like how they have in US. They should have primaries where people elect who is going to represent their parties. They should not be nominated by some general comitee BS. People need to vote for the person and not for the political party. But this is never going to happen in my life time. I just want someone from a different party other than DMK and ADMK rule TN and get rid of this family politics. I am totally in agreement with your point on the people's affinity to the two parties however that goes to the root of my original point which is the dravidian movement. This movement has no basis in fact, it was a divisive ideology to split the people of the state along nefarious racial lines and then point to Sanskrit as the root of all evils. That idea has taken root into the hearts and minds of the tamil people to the point that they will believe nothing else. Why don't you try launching a party which says there is nothing called aryans and dravidians and see what happens?
Guest Gunner Posted May 23, 2011 Posted May 23, 2011 What about the Koodankulam one in 2007/08? I remember reading it somewhere :hmmm: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Koodankulam_Nuclear_Power_Plant Here, it was signed in 1988 and they are still completing it. :cantstop::cantstop: Three PMs have died since then :hysterical::hysterical::hysterical::hysterical:

Once Karuna passes away, DMK splits n in comes thalaivar :aha: I would of credited Vijaykanth if he'd stayed loyal to his word n contested the elections alone but not any more :headshake:
