rkt.india Posted May 28, 2011 Posted May 28, 2011 ^you make no sense. Mumbai don't have good openers. They moved Jaffer in middle order. It must have been Rahane's choice to bat in middle order since he thought thats best way to get into indian team. I had no idea that Pujara is opener. I really doubt he ever opened for Saurashtra. Saurashtra lacks good openers so if he was opener they wouldn't have moved him down. In short your post makes no sense. Rahaane used to open before for Mumbai. Don't you know? in the season they did very badly in Ranji, they made these changes. Jaffer and Rahane shifted to middle order and Sahli Kukreja with different-different openers opened the iinnings, some times even oldy Vinayak Samant opened and still Rahane was played in middle order while he was an opener since Mumbai and India U19. While Pujara too has been an opener but batted in middle order. If you dont know this then that is your problem. dont say, my post does not make sense. read these articles about Rahane. http://www.rediff.com/cricket/2009/jul/26emerging-south-africa-beat-india.htm http://articles.timesofindia.indiatimes.com/2008-12-29/ranji-trophy/27947243_1_ranji-semis-ajit-agarkar-paras-dogra http://cricketnext.in.com/news/ranji-round-up-vinay-mithun-skittle-out-maharashtra/45348-13.html http://www.vcricket.com/cricket-news/india-beat-new-zealand-in-emerging-players-tournament-9659.html anything else:--D and Pujara was the highest run getter in U19 World cup in 2006 and was an opener.
kabira Posted May 28, 2011 Posted May 28, 2011 ^again Pujara opened in U19 world cup, so opening in ODI makes you opener in tests as well? So Sachin should open in Tests? I know Rahane used to open, I never said he did not open, Your reason for him not opening last season does not make sense. Rahane must have asked himself that he prefers number 3, otherwise no point for him to shifted in middle order. Pujara has never opened in longer version.
urbestfriend Posted May 28, 2011 Posted May 28, 2011 ^ What are you on mate? Rahane has opened for Mumbai for many seasons and scored heavily which means he has the requisite technique to open the innings. Just because he has moved to middle order, it doesn't mean he can't open again and stick to middle order. Any batsman who has a decent technique to play the moving ball can open , its not like we need to sterotype a batsman as opener, middle order batsman etc.

It was team management's decision to make middle order strong along with Jaaffer also shifting to middle order. Jaaffer opened whole his life why he should bat at 4 at this stage of his career. It was plan by Mumbai team because in one of previous season their weak middle order crumbled under pressure and they could not reach knock out. you are talking about talking about Tendulkar was not an opener, he was made to open in ODIs and Pujara was since he started playing...okay..understand the difference...Sehwag wasnt opener too but he opens in test...I am not saying he can or cannot open...I am saying he was opener who shifted to middle order..like some middle order batsmen shift to open...

But since he opted to become middle order batsman, Selectors don't think him to be opener anymore....See the difference here?? I think Rahane opted to bat at 3, as he thought thats fastest way to get into indian team since Gambhir and Sehwag still young and have many years left.

Jaffer was moved to middle order to boost middle order. But Rahane chose himself. His shot at making to indian XI was middle order, since opening was managed by Gambhir and Sehwag, both still young. Thats why he opted to shift down to number 3 and 4. and again Pujara has not opened in long version.
saneindian Posted May 28, 2011 Posted May 28, 2011 The decision to play Rahane at 3 was taken by Praveen Amre, the India A coach (who is also the coach of Mumbai Ranji team) during the India A tour of Engand in 2010. Though I haven't read much about why the decision was taken, the only plausible reason is the form of Rahul Dravid around that time with the speculation being of his impending retirement (before the tour of SL last year). Rahane then decided to continue batting at 3 as he was fairly successful (plus the fact that Sehwag, Gambhir with Vijay as the reserve opener leaves him no chance as an opening batsman in full strength Team India).
kabira Posted May 28, 2011 Posted May 28, 2011 ^exactly thats the reason he moved to number 3 spot eyeing indian berth. There was time ppl wanted to convert from middle order to opener to get into the team, when it was almost impossible to get into middle order (example: Yuvi, Sehwag). These days its other way around.

Aha! That is the main reason why it is so unfair. The only real justification they could give for picking Mukund over Rahane is that Mukund opens and Rahane doesn't anymore. So then why did Parthiv Patel make the team over Rahane?? Parthiv has been playing in the middle order for Gujarat. And Rahane's performances should mean he should be playing ahead of both of them, And Rahane most definitely can open, he was good enough to smash Australia's first team bowlers for 113 off 111 in a first class game while opening. If he opened against them then he can open against Windies. The selectors are inept!!
vvvslaxman Posted May 28, 2011 Posted May 28, 2011 Unlike some of the youngsters, Rahane won't have to be disheartened. In a couple of years there will be lot of vacancies in Indian line up.

Karan114 Posted May 28, 2011 Posted May 28, 2011 Dhawan FC average 44, 10 centuries Rahane FC average 67, 17 centuries You serious, Midfielder?
Cricket Tragic Posted May 28, 2011 Posted May 28, 2011 Dhawan being compared to Rahane and Mukund? :hysterical: Plenty of Dhawan fanboys on this forum. :hmmm:
ch1234 Posted May 28, 2011 Posted May 28, 2011 Rahana looks better equipped... Both should have been there and let us see how both perform..
achilles Posted May 29, 2011 Posted May 29, 2011 1. Yeah. Kinda shocking to see Rahane not being picked over Mukund. But then I saw Mukund come up as a substitute for a particular team and well, thats the end of that story. 2. Players are always going to be at the good and bad ends of regional bias. 90s was the Mumbai era and we all know how many South players have missed their bus. So I say its only karma that now they are promoting their own players, be it from the region or from their franchise. 3. Comparing Raina to Ganguly is the most foolish thing anyone who has ever witnessed cricket can do. And I'm not even going to prove a point coz obvious things don't require a statistical or technical defence (in both aspects, Raina is rungs and rungs below Ganguly). 4. There are a few dumb dumb selections that no one can justify. Some of them are- -- Picking Vijay for ODIs after a T20 100 on a flat deck which made people go OMG. -- Picking Raina for Tests in SA because he "earned" his place, only to see him replaced mid-series -- Dropping Badrinath for whatever dumbfeck reasons that exist. -- Not picking Ojha despite his constant good form. -- Dropping Jadeja after training him for a good 8-9 months to get him prep'd for the WC. -- Saurabh Tiwary after 1 IPL and dumping Manoj Tiwary after his first brush with India.
rkt.india Posted May 29, 2011 Posted May 29, 2011 No one comparing raina to ganguly. Ganguly had a bad attitude when he was first selected and dropped. I just said as ganguly improved his game in tests against bouncers, he too was not that good initially, raina too can do it.
