Jersey #10 Posted May 30, 2011 Posted May 30, 2011 Dhoni's contribution with bat in WC - Mediocre to say the least Dhoni's contribution with bat in IPL - Mediocre He is nothing but a hype. Make anyone out of this team a captain and India would still win it all. The team has absolutely the strongest line up possible today and there is not much Dhoni is required to do to win matches. Make anyone a captain and fill up the team with Sachin, Sehwag, Gambhir, UV, Raina and Kohli and India will win just as many games as it has under Dhoni's lead. You can't say that Dhoni has won this and that, the team has...

You can't say that Dhoni has won this and that, the team has... You didn't see innings of the WC final I think then. He couldn't choose a better time for that. And if you want to see the difference between other captains and Dhoni is to just go back to Aus home test series in 2008. Kumble captained 2 tests, 1st and 3rd, with same team and results were draws, in one of which we barely got of the jail and Dhoni captained in 2, 2nd and 4th, and results were 2 wins and remember who he choked Australian batting in Nagpur test with a surprising plan which only opposite captains had implied against Indian batsmen, but never saw some thing like that from any Indian captain, that was a master stroke...win by hook or by crook.... This is Dhoni'r record in this IPL. matches inns runs HS Ave BF Sr 4s 6s MS Dhoni 16 13 392 70* 43.55 247 158.70 25 23 Is this mediocre by any stretch of imagination?
anish233 Posted May 30, 2011 Posted May 30, 2011 we have to remember we won the world cup in the sub-continent... we dont know what could have been the result if it was abroad. nonetheless Dhoni has been a solid captain. no doubt.

So what? This is not the first time WC is being played in subcontinent. did we win in 1987 and 1996? What rubbish argument is this. No team ever won a WC at home till now. Why Australia didnt win in Aus in 1992? have SA won in 2003? England has hosted most WCs, havve they won any at home?
ganeshran Posted May 30, 2011 Posted May 30, 2011 How can we still make "Dhoni is lucky" comments??? :headshake: Our bowling attack was one of the most mediocre of all the test playing nations. Bhajji was not taking wickets, Chawla was cr@p, Munaf/Sreesanth and Nehra were all getting hit around. Zaheer was the only world class bowler we had. It was Dhoni who backed Yuvraj who then delivered. Without Yuvraj's bowling, there is no way we would have come anywhere near the semis. Yes Ashwin was not given enough chances, choosing Sreesanth in the final was a mistake. But Dhoni stood by his mistakes and when the most important time came, he led from the front and took India across the finish line. We havent produced a better captain than Dhoni since we started playing cricket. As a cricketer you can debate his abilities a lot, but as a leader I dont think he should still be unfairly targeted.
Raghav_12 Posted May 30, 2011 Posted May 30, 2011 Dhoni is probably greatest captain India ever had. His success can not be passed on as being just stroke of luck. That would be too much of coincidence. However as a captain he'll have to prove himself when team goes through a transitiion phase which is going to come soon. But in terms of a player, Dhoni has a lot to prove particularly outsuide sub-continent.
anish233 Posted May 30, 2011 Posted May 30, 2011 i was just saying... the conditions suited us best. ANY TEAM IS GOOD AT HOME.. DONT MATTER WHAT THE HISTORY suggests commonnn... for me a test series win in England is much bigger than the world cup win.... so hopefully we get that.
Sachin=GOD Posted May 30, 2011 Posted May 30, 2011 Dhoni gets more credit than he deserves for his captaincy BUT gets less credit than he deserves for his batting/keeping IMHO.
DomainK Posted May 30, 2011 Posted May 30, 2011 Dhoni is probably the greatest captain/leader ever. But as a cricketer, he is yet to achieve a lot to be even called a great, leave alone greatest. Especially in the test format, he needs to perform a much better. But for India, Dhoni's value can not be overstated. He has done what we all wanted so badly - led our team to a world cup victory.
saneindian Posted May 30, 2011 Posted May 30, 2011 WI, Eng and Australia, thats 11 tests in all, away from the subcontinent. Would love to see MSD hit 2-3 test 100s on these tours

You are right when you say that he is not the greatest as a batsman, but he will definitely be called a great if he continues to play like this for the next 5-6 years, he has been in the Top-10 ICC ODI rankings for more than a year, and has been on the No.1 spot for a long time too, he is just into 7th year in International cricket and he has already amassed 6000 runs.
Sidhoni Posted May 30, 2011 Posted May 30, 2011 Imran Khan was one of the Greatest bowler of his time and also played quite a few handy knocks with the bat Ponting on the other hand has been the Best Batsman of 2000s and easily the third best Batsman of his era . Both the above mentioned Gentlemen have achieved a lot as a captain and have been exceptional performers in there individual department . Now if you take away Dhoni's captaincy then do you see anything special in what he has achieved as an individual especially in Test Matches ? Just banking on success on some of the other stars in the team doesnt make him the Greatest Indian Cricketer . In terms of player performance plus captaincy , Kapil easily triumphs Dhoni . i did not question Ponting or Imran's talent, i am nobody to do that, but in ODI's Dhoni has been an exceptional player over the years, he has lot to achieve in test cricket, but still you cant be calling his ODI performances crap if your mental state is allright.

Are you intentionally giving loose balls? :--D Man you must be joking? Lets just agree wiith all the commentators and cricket analyst in the whole world that he brings character to the game :hysterical: :hysterical: :hysterical:

vvvslaxman Posted May 30, 2011 Posted May 30, 2011 Dhoni is cool only infront of camera. He is tough behind it. just because you guys have no clue about how he gets the players to perform well.you can't say he is lucky. He has his own logic behind his moves. Everyone was going after Dhoni for not including Ashwin against Pakistan.MUnaf and Nehra bowled brilliantly. Both pacy spells. You could see the intensity. Be it is Bolllinger this season of IPL final or Ntini in the first season IPL where he was clocking 150k in the final. A team rises as a unit under Dhoni .. more than other captains. If you still have doubts ask Tendulkar.... MS Dhoni is the best captain: Sachin Tendulkar
CSK Fan Posted May 30, 2011 Posted May 30, 2011 A lot of things, together has brought India to the levle it has reached now. Everyone from Gangluy to Dravid, to Sachin have contributed to this rise over the year. To put all the praise on one guy's shoulder, IMO, is very short sighted. As they say, Rome was not built in a day. also, BCCI needs to be credited for a lots of good things Having said that, Dhoni is definitely currently the most valuable player in the team and deserves a lot of credit for where the team is. I am more worried about him burning out with the way we are milking him
vvvslaxman Posted May 30, 2011 Posted May 30, 2011 Dhoni is valurable in the sense.. every time he backs something and when it fails he personally steps in and saves the day. One of another unique aspect about his captaincy as he revealed to Jackus was how he did not attend bowlers meetings, how he did not walk in with a pre-planned strategies. He walks in with an open and clear mind and makes decisions on the spur of the moment. Bit surprising for an international captain this day and age. But it works for him most of the time. He doesn't want him to be tied down by laptop analysis. An aspect that SA commies had time and time appreciated. I don't know if it works for other captains. But this guy is very shrewd on the field. More than lot of other captains going around, more than captains we had. We saw how Viru pathetically led a test in New zealand.

I didn't say that Dhoni is "not good" but he is definitely not the "most valuable cricketer of all time for India". He apparently "chose" to play in the final match. Does that mean he chose not to do well in the rest of the games? The notion of "choosing" to peak at the right time is dumb. It's a good thing that we got the better of him in the last game and when needed. That does not mean that he won the whole world cup on his own. If Sachin, Yuvraj and Raina had not rescued the team at the needed times during the first two rounds we would not have made it to the finals. Dhoni is obviously one of the best India has produced but he is far from the "most valuable".
