In the last 3-4 years, he's the only Aussie batsman to have been consistent. What a way to reward the hard work for the national side. The only possible reason is they do not want too many 35 year olds in the team. And preferred the two others, Punter and Hussey over Katich.
The thing is though, we are ok for backup regarding middle order batsman. Khawaja could come in quite easily I feel.. Then you got the likes of Ferguson still to be given a go.. But as for openers.. Who else is there that can open in that squad? Hughes, Marsh? Hughes has not scored in ages! Marsh doesn't have a very good FC record either.. I find it hard to believe that if by the next time Aus play a test match and Katich is piling on the runs for NSW that he won't be chosen.

Mike Hussey got a contract after 10 years and scoring million runs in domestic cricket. Cummins has 9 wickets in 3 FC games at almost 50 average and already have a contract. :WTF:

@bradman what about Phil Jacques?
He only averaged around 34 last season. Hughes actually averaged 41 which is better then I thought but still not exactly test material is it.. Which makes me even more surprised as to why Katich is not in the squad.. Marsh averaged 60 although only played 4 matches.. Khawaja has come out and said he would be happy to open.. Maybe that's the way the selectors are looking..

IMO it sounds like they will go with Hughes and persist with him this time at the top, with Khawaja and Ferguson competing for one middle order slot. I think bowling is a bigger issue, no matter how crappy the options are they can't have this merry-go-round of spinners again.

Katich slams selectors

Dumped Australia opener Simon Katich has taken a swipe at Australia's selection panel, labelling their decision to axe him "absolutely ridiculous". Andrew Hilditch - stay or go? Should Andrew Hilditch resign as chairman of selectors? Yes No Katich announced on Friday he would continue his cricket career with New South Wales, before unleashing an amazing attack on Cricket Australia and their selection panel. "I am extremely disappointed and frustrated," Katich said. "I hope something good comes out of this because I think the decision the other day was absolutely ridiculous." Katich slammed the selection panel for their conflicting policies, highlighting the decision to name a 17-man Ashes squad last summer as an example of their inconsistency. Without naming names, Katich said several other Australia players felt aggreived by the selection process and hinted at player unrest. "I am extremely diasppointed and frustrated. But I also want to make it clear that I know that I'm not the only player who has gone through this due to inconsistent selection." He also questioned why his age was given as a reason for his sacking. "For as long as I can remember, you get picked for your performance," he said. "Now it seems that's changed and you get picked not only for your performance, but for your potential." Katich thanked his family, friends and teammates for their support, and he reserved a special thank you for the Australian cricket public for the overwhelming amount of support I have received". "It has been an incredibly humbling experience and something that I and my family are very, very grateful for." Katich opened the press conference by having a cheeky swipe at the selectors for their decision to drop him because of his age. "I just want to apologise for not having shaved this morning," he said. "My friends tell me it makes me look five years younger, but I don't want to hide from the fact that I'm 35." Katich's disgust with Cricket Australia was evident in his opening statements as he didn't acknowledge CA while heaping praise on Cricket NSW. "The level of respect I have for Cricket NSW and also my teammates over the last nine years, I think that the amount of respect I have for my teammates and also the administrators here, I really want to repay that faith they've shown in me and hopefully we can have a very good season coming up." Katich should have scored big 100s like Cook in Ashes if he wanted the contract so badly.No point in whining now.
It's a bit hard to do that from the sidelines mate.

They have tried before and failed, but this time they have really taken him perilously close to the abyss. Katich is known for his fighting spirt and if his past is any indication, he won't let them beat him. Katich revealed he is very upset. He played his last four Tests with serious injuries and feels he has been judged on that and not the fact that he has been the second-highest runscorer in international Tests since returning to the side in 2008. In India last year he played two matches with a broken thumb which was incorrectly diagnosed by Cricket Australia staff. In Adelaide he played even though he knew his achilles was about to go because the side wanted his grit at the top of the order to protect the out-of-form batsmen below him. Katich was told on Tuesday he no longer had a Cricket Australia contract. The news has been met with howls of outrage from former players and the public who suggest it is the selectors, not he, who should pay for the Ashes failure. Simon Katich is angry, but is wresting back control. He was deliberate, careful and honest when he broke his silence and spoke to The Australian. "Do I think I have been treated fairly? Not at all, not at all," he says. "From my point of view I have had to play through injuries in the last four Test matches, two with a broken thumb and two with a torn achilles," Katich said. "I didn't want to play Test cricket like that although I know that is what they have judged me on. "In India they kept telling me it was a bruised thumb and I could hardly hold the bat but they kept telling me it was bruised so I thought 'Well I can't not play Test cricket if it's a bruise'." Not only did he bat with the injury, he bowled as well. Gripping the ball with his "bruised" thumb. The night after the terrible Adelaide Test ended he was at the airport with another player who ordered a beer and offered to get him one. He had earned it having made 43 batting on one leg. "No thanks mate," Katich said. "Recovery starts now." Katich returned home to a relentless recovery program and was at the SCG on Tuesday when he saw Andrew Hilditch's name appear on the screen of his mobile phone. "I was in the middle of a fitness test, saw the phone ringing and saw who it was and thought 'Damn, I better answer this'," Katich said. "I knew full well what it was, I didn't want him to have the luxury of leaving a message, so I grabbed it." The selectors axed Katich in Sri Lanka in 2004 when he was in great form and had to eat their words and reinstate him soon after. And Hilditch told him in 2007 that he wouldn't play Tests again. So he knew the way they worked. "It's funny, I have been treated like this before by them," Katich said. "I have been down this path a number of times." It would only have been human of Hilditch to hope to deliver the news after hearing the beeps on Katich's mobile. "I spoke my mind, I certainly didn't hold back," Katich admits. "There was no shirking the issue, but there was nothing said that was personal it was just about the decision. I vented my spleen about the decision and explained why. There was no name-calling or anything like that." Katich is upset because he believes he has so much more to offer the side at a time when it needs it most. His statistics prove that. "Put it this way I don't think I would have wasted our physio and our fitness trainers' time over the past six months or my time doing this rehab every second day for the sake of it," he said. "That is not how I operate. It's not just my time, it is the staff's time as well and I am always respectful of that. "Up to Tuesday I had done three weeks' training ahead of the rest of the squad starting and I did that because I wanted to be ready and firing in Sri Lanka." Katich will announce what the future holds today. He is not in the mood to spare anybody.

It's funny how such things start tumbling out when a team is doing badly. When the Aussies were winning everything, so many similar team related issues would have been swept under the carpet and no one bothered. But if you look at it now, there is nepotism, favoritism, politics even in the so called professionally managed board like CA.
