Top 10 comedy movies of the year 2011

We don't know if they made you laugh Out loud, but that was the intention of a few films that released in 2011. Whether they succeeded or not is another story altogether. We bring to you the Top 10 list of the intended 'funny' movies of the year-that-was. In 'Yamla Pagla Deewana', the humour is fortunately not slapstick and the gags vary from hilarious to humdrum. Yamla Pagla Deewana employs formula but doesn't get formulaic. It has action and comedy but doesn't get slapstick. It brings together the Deols but not without a story. This one is an entertainer and not without a reason. Delhi Belly polishes the crime-comedy genre by a few notches despite its unrefined ambience. Fast-paced, the milieu is authentic, the dialect unadulterated and the characters real. One of the most original and entertaining comedies to have come out of Bollywood in recent times, Delhi Belly is hilarious in 'capital' letters. In 'Ready', you have Salman doing everything he loves to do -- and you love to see. He talks in cheesy dialogues, breaks into rumbustious songs and dances, romances the girl in brazen fashion, becomes the invincible hit machine whenever desired, never let's go of his popular family boy avatar and tries to make you laugh by consistently playing it over the top. And yes, he does do what he's supposed to do: removes his shirt, bares his perfectly sculpted body and vainly asks `mazaa aaya kya?' Yup, bahut mazaa aaya. The film has an interesting premise. It tries to investigate the basic incompatibility of the yin and the yang through a set of urban yuppies who try to build and unbuild relationships in the harsh metropolis. Chalo Dilli , in a way, almost seems like an extension to Vinay Pathak's claim-to-fame Bheja Fry with the same theme of an irritating-yet-cute and roly-poly Pathak in company of an elite stranger, and their contrasting chemistry resulting into hilarity. Films like Chalo Dilli are slowly and steadily making a revolutionary call towards story-driven cinema over star-based propositions. Certainly likeable in 'capital' letters! Despite 'Tanu Weds Manu's predictable -- and paper thin -- storyline, the film manages to hook you with its sheer atmospherics. The director creates an extremely busy and colourful canvas brimming with characters who are anything but cardboard cut-outs. Fun while it lasts, Tanu Weds Manu throws up Bollywood's newest obsession -- small town girls and their gunas (values) -- once again. Akshay Kumar steals the scene even where his presence is not primary. John Abraham is cool, convincing and glides effortlessly through his part. Their casual chemistry makes 'Desi Boyz' work big time. contrary to their purported indecent acts, the film turns out to be a decent entertainer. First things first, part one was better. It was stupid, but it did have lots of goofy humour and fun. The sequel is more stupid than funny, nevertheless there are enough moments to keep the clock ticking. This one's definitely not for the fastidious, choosy viewer but for those who don't mind losing it for a bit, Double Dhamaal works like an average Bollywood comedy. First things first: you do end up a few shades disappointed with the sequel, specially since the first part was such a scintillating act. The humour is laid back, the laughs are too few and far between. But give yourself a little time and let the characters take shape. It won't be long before you realize that Bharat Bhushan is still the nicest fool in the world. Dil To Baccha Hai Ji may have its heart in the right place but the tone is a bit tenuous and the comedy only intermittently breezy. Nevertheless, there's enough mood and attitude in the film to make for a pleasant viewing.

Mad Men makers to adapt Sacred Games Vikram Chandra's book on the Mumbai underworld, Sacred Games, is being turned into a tele series by American TV giant AMC, better known as the producers of the popular Mad Men series. Chandra has revealed that he is working only as a consultant for the international project, while the screenplay is being written by Kerry Williamson. "It is going to be a big logistical battle. It is not a mini series, but you if you have seen Mad Men, you would know how elaborate it can be," said Chandra, who has also co-authored the film Mission Kashmir. Link Next year should be good for Indian television. Anil Kapoor is bringing the Indian version of "24" and then there's this show and of course KBC.

Dilip Kumar, Raj Kapoor’s ancestral homes to get heritage status

The ancestral homes of Bollywood legends Dilip Kumar and Raj Kapoor in the northwestern Pakistani city of Peshawar will be given the status of national heritage sites, a provincial minister has said. Mian Iftikhar Hussain, the Information Minister of Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa province, said both actors were a “source of pride for our land” as they were born in Peshawar and steps would be taken to protect their homes in the famous Qissa Khwani Bazar. Mr. Hussain made the remarks while interacting with the media during a visit to the erstwhile homes of the Bollywood stars. He was accompanied by Culture Secretary Azmat Hanif Orakzai, Culture Director Pervaiz Khan and well-known artist Jamal Shah. The minister directed the Culture Secretary to include the residences of both acting legends in the list of national heritage sites and to contact their current owners for their purchase. Mr. Hussain said the provincial government has decided to make documentaries and stage dramas on the life of these great artists. “A plan is under consideration to promote our culture by holding conferences at the national and international levels,” he said on Saturday. Dilip Kumar was born as Muhammad Yusuf Khan at Mohalla Khudadad in Qissa Khwani Bazar on December 11, 1922. Dilip Kumar’s father, Lala Ghulam Sarwar, was a fruit merchant who owned orchards in Peshawar. The family shifted to Mumbai in the late 1920s. During interviews, Dilip Kumar has fondly reminisced about visiting his ancestral home while on a trip to Pakistan. Raj Kapoor, the son of acting legend Prithviraj Kapoor, too was born in Peshawar on December 14, 1924. The actor-director is best known for a string of hit films he made in the 1950s and 1960s. The homes of both actors in Peshawar are reportedly in a state of disrepair. The top floor of Prithviraj Kapoor’s five-storey house at Dakhi Nalbandi, Peshawar’s highest point, collapsed years ago but 60 rooms still survive. Some relatives of Bollywood star Shah Rukh Khan still live in Shah Wali Qataal area of Peshawar.

Sholay’s 3D dreams shattered

With the Sippys involved in a family tussle, Subhash Ghai and Deepa Sahi might never get to complete their project Sholay was going to be converted into 3D. However, Mukta Arts that had been working with Ketan Mehta's Maya Digital on turning this project into a reality, has washed its hands off it. Mukta Arts, that holds a stake in Maya Digital is reportedly, put off by the legal hassles that the Sippy family is currently embroiled in. This is the second project from the Sippys that has run into rough weather owing to the problems in their family. Earlier, producer GP Sippy's son Suresh raised an objection against GP Sippy's grandsons Sascha and Shaan, claiming that they had no right to license the remake rights of Seeta Aur Geeta to Sunil Bohra (Mumbai Mirror, February 7, 2011). Suresh has raised an objection this time around as well. While Sascha Sippy remained unavailable for comment, Suresh Sippy told Mumbai Mirror, "How can Ghai convert Sholay into 3D when we Sippys are in a legal conflict? My lawyer spoke to Ghai and told him about the same. And well, I don't know anything about Maya Digital's plans. Negative kahan hai unke paas? Yes, Sascha has the rights of Sholay but I also sent a message across to Sascha not to entertain any such proposals." However, Ramesh Sippy, the director of Sholay doesn't seem to have any problem with the licensing. a source close to the family revealed, "Mr Ramesh Sippy is out from the family business after our film Brashtachar released in 1989." When contacted, Mukta Arts's head honcho Subhash Ghai said, "I am not associated with Sholay getting converted into 3D. I am just a stakeholder in Maya Digital. As far as I am concerned, the matter ended some six months ago." When asked whether he was still pursuing the conversion of Sholay into 3D, Ketan Mehta said, "I don't want to talk about this at all." His wife Deepa Sahi too excused herself, saying, "We are working on ten projects and we at Maya Digital have a Non-Disclosure agreement on all of them."
