Not sure about that list. From what I have seen, Sehwag's 200 against SL and Lara's 200 are great test innings from that list. I would say Vvs 281 and Lara's 153 and 277 is the best that I have seen in terms of sheer quality of batsmanship. I think Sober's 250 for world xi against australia deserves mention, regarded by many as greatest innings they have seen. I would have said Sachin's 100 against Pakistan where he fought like a gladiator in impossible conditions againsta quality attacks till the final hurdle. That still hurts. I would say Sachin's hundred in chase of 383 is his best knock in tests.

Sehwag, Don, Sobers, Lara .... the usual suspects are on the list At present, I rank the Ind test batsmen as follows: - Gavaskar - Tendulkar - Sehwag - Dravid - Laxman But if Veeru continues with such performances, I would be tempted to put him at #2, i.e. - Gavaskar - Sehwag then the 90s-00s brigade, i.e. - Tendulkar - Dravid - Laxman

Notable ommisions which should definitely be on the list... 1. Laxman's 281 against Aus. I don't think we will ever watch a much better innings in Test cricket in the situation it was played in. 2. Lara's 153* against Aussies. IMO it was better than Lara's 213 which is on the list. Lara single-handedly guided WI to a win in that match. 3. Graham Gooch's 150 odd against WI in early 90s out of a total of 240 odd where he was the lone batsman from either side to make a major contribution. Defo deserves to be on the list. Others which could have been on the list but you can either way... 1. Tendulkar's 136 against Pakistan in Chennai would have been on the list if India had managed to win the match. This is one match which still hurts along with India not able to chase 120 against WI in 1998. 2. Similarly Gavaskar's innings of 221 against Eng while chasing 400+ would have been on the list if India had managed to squeak past Eng. IIRC India finished agonizingly close to the win. 3. Gavaskar's 96 on a minefield against Pakistan at B'lore in 1986-87. India fell 16 runs short else that innings would have been ranked pretty high. 4. Dravid's 100s at Jamaica in 2006 where he was the only one to get past a 50 from either side on a dicey pitch. 5. Dravid's 270 against Pak to pave the way for India's first Test series win in Pak 6. Dravid's 232 against Aus in Adelaide in 2003-04 when Aus had put up 550+ in their first innings. India went on to win the Test on the back of Dravid's twin innings of 232 and 90 odd. Defo one of the best performances.

^ all those were pretty good innings but I wouldn't say 'omissions' as they are talking abt top 10 here .... with quite a few good innings being played in the history of test cricket, picking top 10 would have been tough (even though by an automated ranking system)

Granted they were top notch efforts but surely not better than Laxman's 281 if you take opposition and match & series context in consideration. Same for Lara's 153* and for Gooch's 150 odd. The other ones I agree could be omitted from the list.

My bad. I wonder what sort of "all possible parameters" are considered when match context is left out :haha:

1.Bowling attack 2. Pitch (% of the runs scored by the batsman in entire match) My question ? Would you have rated Laxman's 281 rated so highly if it had come in second innings of the match? Computer doesn't understand emotions. It is a list on ICC site.

But that innings did come in India's 2nd innings and that too when following on when India were staring an innings defeat in the face! I mean playing a match winning innings when your team is faced with an innings defeat has to mean something, especially since the series was on the line and the opponent was one of the best teams ever to play the game with 16 Test wins on the trot.

Any list without 281 is flawed for obvious reasons. Also, without looking up the criteria, seems like SR is given importance, given that Sehwag's knocks feature prominently. I would put RD's 233 up there as well.

I read the blog and appears as if it could have considered match situations as unlike what's mentioned in OP, the blog doesn't state that
4 - Don Bradman, AUS, 270 v ENG, Melbourne, 01/01/1937 Caught on a vicious "sticky" wicket, Bradman opened the batting with his tail-enders and batted at number seven. Coming in at 97 for five, his innings is still the highest-ever at that position. O’Reilly and Fleetwood-Smith did the rest.

Very biased list. None of the Sehwag innings on flat tracks deserve to be in that list. Kamran Akmal hundred at Karachi is better than all those double & triple 100s on roads. Also Hanif Muhammad longest inningsever is better than most listed above.

On that occasion Bradman inverted the order and sent his tail in first to ensure that the wicket dried out by the time top order batsmen came in. His ploy worked like a charm and they were able to put up a mammoth total after losing their first 5-6 wkts cheaply.

Dravid only scored 50s in both the innings and those were remarkable innings and wicket stays same in whole match and was one of the toughest i have seen to bat on. VIru's 201 in Galle..is the best iinnigs i have seen against spin where all team only scored 329.

I agree, more ridiculous bias against Pakistan :((

My mistake. Those 50s now seem to look like 100s :--D
