The current system of allowing the side as many referrals upto 2 unsuccessful challenges is definitely better than the previous system of 3 fixed challenges. But if the intent of the system is to eliminate howlers, it should be to eliminate howlers thru the entire duration of the innings, not just the portion where a side still has referrals. You saw a clear manifestation of that during the day 1 of the Adelaide test in Australia. The South Africans used up both of their referrals within the first 3 hours of of day 1 (and both looked legitimate close calls) and were left with no recourse for the rest of the duration of the Aussie innings. Lets be clear in one thing - The burden to get the umpiring decision right is squarely on the umpires, not on the fielding captain or the batsmen at the crease who'd like their decision referred. The way the system is set-up now, the responsibility is often times on the fielding captain to take an extremely tough call to review a decision or not, despite being saddled with ridiculous operating conditions (he obviously cannot look at replays and he has to take the decision to review within 30 secs (apprx) of the original decision). This is not fair on the fielding captain. I would slightly modify the current system whereby, along the a new ball after 80 overs, both the fielding and batting teams get an additional referral if, and only IF, they are already out of referrals. So in the case of day 1 in Adelaide, the South Africans would have got an additional referral after the 80th over. The Australians would not have received any as they still had their original 2 with them.

There is enough time in cricket before the next delivery is bowled, for the 3rd umpire to decide if he wants to have a closer look or not. The 30 seconds players take to decide if they want to have referral or the time players take to walk back can also be used by the 3rd umpire to decide if he wants to stop play and have a closer look. We are already stopping play to check over stepping, bump catches and a lot more frequently, so i see no reason not to go completely DRS, without these limitations, in the name of not stopping play a lot.

Yes. BCCI are doing it not cos they believe in not having drs but cos they are just being stubborn and want to show their power and how they cant be pushed around. I think dhoni wanted to show players are in favour of drs by doing a mock referral sign to umpire in recent odi.

True that. At this point it's no longer about DRS or making the right call - probably most of BCCI folks and senior Indian cricketers know DRS is the way to go. But at this point it's more about ego and saving its face. Unfortunately Indian team will pay for the standoff as we will suffer more without DRS as the England home series proved.
