jashan83 Posted July 5, 2011 Posted July 5, 2011 (Pakistani's would be more depressed) COLOMBO: Sri Lanka's cash-strapped cricket governing body is likely to scale down its inaugural Twenty20 league and go ahead without foreign players, a source close to the process said Tuesday. The Sri Lanka Premier League (SLPL) was scheduled to kick off on July 19 with players from Australia, India, New Zealand, Pakistan and the West Indies, but foreigners demanding hefty fees are now unlikely to be included. "The thinking at the moment is to go ahead with only local players," a source close to Sri Lanka Cricket told AFP. He said a decision by India to ban its players from taking part in the SLPL, which is modelled on the successful Indian Premier League (IPL), had undermined the viability of Sri Lanka's venture. The involvement of Indian stars in the event was seen as essential to enhance television audiences in the lucrative Indian market. Sri Lanka co-hosted the 2011 World Cup at a cost of $69 million, far in excess of its projected budget amid allegations of financial mismanagement. India was opposed to participating in the SLPL after media reports that the tournament had links to Lalit Modi, the sacked former boss of IPL. Sri Lanka has denied the involvement of Modi who faces criminal charges and accusations from Indian cricket authorities over millions of dollars misappropriated during his three-year tenure as IPL chairman. http://timesofindia.indiatimes.com/sports/cricket/top-stories/Sri-Lanka-to-scale-down-Twenty20-league/articleshow/9111547.cms

Trichromatic Posted July 5, 2011 Posted July 5, 2011 This tournament is hopeless in terms of finance and management. Not a surprising decision by SLC.
jairamesh Posted July 5, 2011 Posted July 5, 2011 I voiced my concerned that this SLPL was nothing but a chest thumping exercise from Sri Lanka Cricket Board, and that Somerset Entertainment will take them for a ride. For a developing country's sports organization to be in debt of US$ 69million is mind boggling, and then to offer US$10,000-US$30,000 to over 30 players to play for two weeks without securing any major TV deal was just plain suicide. Idiocy from SLC's greedy politicians though they are not alone in this illogical nature of cricket administration around the world.
Trichromatic Posted July 5, 2011 Posted July 5, 2011 It seems that many of you are obsessed with Pakistani team. :winky:
Trichromatic Posted July 5, 2011 Posted July 5, 2011 Btw, reports of exclusion of foreign players have been dismissed. Sri Lanka Cricket's new interim committee will meet with Somerset Entertainment Ventures on Friday to discuss the future of the Sri Lanka Premier League (SLPL). The previous committee, which created the tournament, was dissolved last week by Sri Lanka's sports ministry and a new panel was appointed in its place. ESPNcricinfo understands that the new committee is still getting up to speed on the tournament and will decide how to go ahead with it once they have met Somerset. "We have not yet met the SLPL organisers," Sidath Wettimuny, one of the members of the new committee, told ESPNcricinfo. "The meeting is scheduled on Friday." Wettimuny also denied rumours that the tournament had been postponed or that it would go ahead with only Sri Lankan players. The change in administration so close to the launch of the tournament is the latest setback for the SLPL, which has already been hit by the BCCI's refusal to allow Indian players to take part. The BCCI had withheld its permission on the grounds that Somerset, which owns the commercial rights, would be handling the contracts for international players and that could lead to complications should disputes arise over payments. In order to assuage the Indian board, SLC was willing to back the Indian players' contracts so that their financial interests were protected, but that was not enough to satisfy the BCCI. The Indian board has also claimed that former IPL chairman Lalit Modi had a hand in the event, but SLC and Somerset have repeatedly denied the allegation, as has Modi. The BCCI's decision means the tournament does not have a broadcaster for the lucrative Indian market, a situation that makes it much more difficult for the SLPL to find a secure financial footing, something that the new committee will have to consider. One potential incentive for holding the tournament as scheduled is the Champions League T20 in September. The winner of the SLPL receives a spot in that tournament and since Sri Lanka host Australia in August and September, July is the only available window before the CLT20. However, given that the SLPL's first game is set for July 19th, SLC would have only 11 days after Friday's meeting to organise the event, including putting in place security for the players and the anti-corruption measures required by the ICC. http://www.espncricinfo.com/sri-lanka-premier-league-2011/content/story/522038.html
TheWall Posted July 6, 2011 Posted July 6, 2011 Who cares whether it is held or not....useless tournament...
Roshanrocks Posted July 6, 2011 Posted July 6, 2011 Pakistanis and Bangladeshis are playing in England
Hindustani Posted July 6, 2011 Posted July 6, 2011 Who cares whether it is held or not....useless tournament... Srilankan monkeys on their forums are blaiming BCCI for their ineptness and incompetency :--D I think they too have got the jehadi syndrome of blaiming the whole world of their failures and being delusional and thinking SLPL was a threat to IPL . herp derp
Hindustani Posted July 6, 2011 Posted July 6, 2011 It seems that many of you are obsessed with Pakistani team. :winky: Pakistan, their people, Pakistani cricket, their cricketers, their board and their fans are part of Giant Circus providing entertainment to ICF crowd (and to the whole world as a matter of fact) :hysterical: are you the incarnated version of pak_4_ever (or something like this, can't remember, too many jokers with pak under their handle name) ? he had promised that "inshallah" mods have to ban him if Pakistan won the semifinal and then he quitely disappeared, probably again came back with a new alias (must be the case with many other "paks") :--D
BeautifulGame Posted July 6, 2011 Posted July 6, 2011 Already tarnished even before the tournament begins? Harldy will help their brand image if they have one in the 1st place.
