Rajiv Posted July 10, 2011 Posted July 10, 2011 So after this, we go -2 and windies gained + 2. Even if we would have won this, we would still go -1 but windies would be square. Overall, a good experience for the youngsters
Pagalpanti Posted July 10, 2011 Posted July 10, 2011 Rankings system sometimes really puzzle me, India had to win 3-0 and still wouldn't gain even 1 point. Kind of makes this series pointless ranking wise for India.

jairamesh Posted July 10, 2011 Posted July 10, 2011 bogus points system, the system doesn't account for the significant influence of weather on match results. i prefer the county system offering bonus points for 1st innings batting and bowling performances. but who am i to complain.

That works in county because they play on same kind of pitches. While India play on flat and SA play on sportive wickets. BP wont work here.
jairamesh Posted July 10, 2011 Posted July 10, 2011 That works in county because they play on same kind of pitches. While India play on flat and SA play on sportive wickets. BP wont work here. good point, but not entirely true, flat wickets should earn you more batting points (by scoring at higher run-rates), and bowler friendly pitches for more bowling points (by taking say e.g. 10 wickets in 100 overs). Sporting wickets shall provide opportunity for both. following is the county system (probably would need tweaking to apply to 5 day test cricket) 1st innings (first 110 overs only) Batting 200-249 runs: 1 point 250-299 runs: 2 points 300-349 runs: 3 points 350-399 runs: 4 points 400+ runs: 5 points Bowling 3-5 wickets taken: 1 point 6-8 wickets taken: 2 points 9-10 wickets taken: 3 points for this match: India get 3 batting pts, and 3 bowling pts. total: 6 WI get 1 batting pts, and 3 bowling pts. total: 4
gaurav92 Posted July 11, 2011 Posted July 11, 2011 We deserved it the way we played and it was all fair to me :dontknow:

It makes perfect sense to me. The ranking system, the way it is, is responsible for India being the # 1 team. Why question them now when we lost some points?
Mariyam Posted July 11, 2011 Posted July 11, 2011 How is it pointless. You gotta thrash the bejesus out of the worst cricket team bar BD' date=' or else you lose points. Seems fair to me.[/quote'] I'm no expert on this ranking system, but this looks like a big joke to me. We went to the WI with a severely weakened team, and won 1 test match. The other game we couldn't win because of the rain and the 3rd game we had the upper hand for 4 & three quarters of the days, and yet we manage to lose points after the series. Somehow I cannot digest this logic. Some questions: 1) Are points awarded only for the end result or for the way the game is played also? 2) We took a second string team to the WI. Does that factor into the rankings? 3) We played in the WI. Does that factor into the rankings?
Mariyam Posted July 11, 2011 Posted July 11, 2011 How is it pointless? When # 1 team plays # 7 team' date= one would expect them to win 3-0. If they don't, they should lose points. It makes perfect sense to me. The ranking system, the way it is, is responsible for India being the # 1 team. Why question them now when we lost some points? No, one wouldn't expect a 3-0 win. For that everything has to go the way of the #1 team, including the mood swings of the weather Gods. Also, is the gap between 1 and 7 so much that 1 is supposed to whitewash 7 who is playing at home?
Mariyam Posted July 11, 2011 Posted July 11, 2011 Ok, I decided to make myself useful and tried to look for the answers to those questions myself: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cricket_rating_systems & http://icc-cricket.yahoo.net/match_zone/team_ranking.php The second link has a PDF which explains some of the stuff, but it is still vague. At least to me. Basically, India gets a bonus for winning the series. The bonus amount is equivalent to that of winning an individual test game. The points are indexed around 100. 100 means you win as many as you lose, or in other words you are an average side. The higher you go from 100, the better is your win to loss ratio. After that it got too complex for me to understand so I stopped. However, this system doesn't take into account the place of the test match. That is a joke as per me. If India were to play Australia in Australia or in India, the points that India and Australia would get at the end of the series would be the same, though it is infinitely harder to beat Australia in Australia. Also there are no special provisions, if a weakened side is taken.
riwi999 Posted July 11, 2011 Posted July 11, 2011 Why should there be any provisions at all if a weakened side is taken? If some players were injured/wanted rest or BCCI chose to take a younger squad on tour for the experience, that is just part of strategy. If you miss out on a Grand Slam tournament (because of injury) - and you won it the previous year, it will affect your points/ranking. And it should! Sending a "weakened" side is a subjective assessment anyway and has no place in determining rankings. As for considering rain-ruined games, too bad but that's the nature of the sport. Sometimes it works in your favor, sometimes it does not. Yes, it would make sense to consider home/away game (I am surprised that is not factored in) but as long as it applies to everybody, I'm fine with it. It is also considered infinitely harder to beat India in India than to beat India in an opposition's backyard. All in all, I'm not too unhappy with the ranking system. Sure, it can be improved but it's fair to everybody.
Sachinism Posted July 11, 2011 Posted July 11, 2011 How is it pointless. You gotta thrash the bejesus out of the worst cricket team bar BD' date=' or else you lose points. Seems fair to me.[/quote'] Exactly and we deserve it for taking the losers approach
BERGKAMP Posted July 11, 2011 Posted July 11, 2011 I don't give a flying fxck about rankings, I will be more than delighted if we can win our next 10 test series 1-0.
Sidhoni Posted July 11, 2011 Posted July 11, 2011 This series could have won 2-0 easily if not 3-0, In both the drawn tests, weather got the better of us, and so the rankings must also note the impact of weather, and the situation of the match , when a test is drawn.

As for considering rain-ruined games, too bad but that's the nature of the sport. Sometimes it works in your favor, sometimes it does not. This is why it makes sense to judge teams by how they play and not just the result. For eg, India played very well in the second test. As it rained, we couldn't get a result. And since we are better ranked than the WI, we lost out on points by the draw because of the vagaries of the monsoons ( or its Caribbean equivalent). If the rank system took into account how the teams played and not just the end result, then we would be better placed and it would be more fair. Yes, it would make sense to consider home/away game (I am surprised that is not factored in) but as long as it applies to everybody, I'm fine with it.
