When a mediocre cricketer like Dhoni becomes the biggest name of Indian cricket it's obvious to see the decay in the brains of the younger generation. It's not confined to one field - the popularity of Sonu Nigam far outshines Ghulam Ali' date= Mehdi Hassan, or even Jagjit Singh. I would love to have players who do nothing but "twirl a cricket bat after hitting a 6" and successfully chasing in the WC final. The two biggest wins for India in their cricketing history have been T20 Cup final win and the WC 2011 win, and Dhoni was responsible for those. I would rather have a player like him than thousands of Mongias and other mediocres.

He's the captain who has delivered 2 World Cups to India who had been waiting since 83 to win a World Cup.

Pretty much. Yeah, I agree he is one of the finest ODI cricketer from India - that doesn't make him much better than mediocre because even though Bevan was one of the finest ODI cricketer he was still mediocre compared to a Steve Waugh.

It all surrounds around Internet. Even today to watch football, you really have to pay a premium tv price. But with internet, many are getting to watch it for free. And this is what is happening in major cities in India. Basically, internet has provided a easy + cheap platform to watch football. But that's only the first step which is watching, now we really need to make them want to play football. And this can only happen with better infrastructure and really more $$ (investment)

Another hilarious thread! So because Aussies don't rate Bevan over Waugh so Indians too mustn't rate Dhoni ahead of a Laxman. Ignore the fact that Dhoni has excelled in the code (ODIs) most religiously followed in India. Apparently there's some divine injunction that has ordained the supremacy of Tests. Hysterical stuff.

Purists(especially those from England) always rate players on the basis of Test Cricket records. Though Cricket World Cup is big in subcontinent, middle east and Australia, it has no respect in England. That's why Dhoni will never be rated by former Test legends from England and Australia, even if he had won 5 WC's for India.

Quality discussion here........The thread posted on this topic before I posted on the same topic had some very good discussions. It's the 'coolness' factor as some say, the western culture is showing a strong influence over the Indian youth, especially in the metros. Most of these fellows don't know that the Europeans love football because they admire it's history, they understand every minor detail of the game and also because their countrymen do very well in it. You cannot have a career like you havei n cricket. With IPL there will be even more interest in cricket. There is no way in hell Football can overtake cricket. Indians follow all sports for years. I agree he is the best wk-batsman india has produced which i have seen.But if captain takes all the credit for wins then he is also captain to get whitewashed twice in test series and his performance in world cup as a whole as captain and batsman were mediocore.Actually some of his decisons like playing chawla and poor captaincy nearly cost us the wc.

Of whatever i have read and heard hockey was as popular as cricket also hockey is as physical intensive as football and regarding ratings once we have good youth programs and training going the climb is going to be fast.many major clubs are opening academies so it is a good sign.

He is a wicket keeper and there is no reason to think that his test records are dismal. As a captain, his records have been even more impressive than as a batsman. Being a captain and a wicket keeper, and to keep playing all forms of cricket throughout the year is no joke. For that reason alone Dhoni deserves all the respect he gets. Who cares if he is not rated by some jokers in England?

Hockey if my memory serves right lost its charm due to their frequent change of laws. It was quiet confusing for viewers. Also skills were taken over by athleticism in hockey. Yes everyone celebrated the way India levelled germany 5-5 from being 1-5 in the last minute. But those were far and few between. People were drooling over Mohammad shahid's dribbling skills. He was possibly the best of his time. Also overall international hockey is not that much a revenue generating sports like other sports. Everyone followed it with interest. Still not as much as cricket.
