What exactly makes Dhoni a superb captain??

This was a question I guess has been asked time and time again.I am not here to provide any analysis but if some of the Dhoni fans could enlighten me that would be great? Time and time again I have heard people praise his captaincy to the hilt but I still fail to understand what was so extraordinary about his captaincy. Was giving Joginder sharma the last over in t20 2007 a brilliant move as it was made out to be because when he tried the same thing with Nehra who definetely is a way superior bowler than Jogi against SA in WC it was a flop. We say he has never lost a test series in 3 years but how exactly does his captaincy fit into this.Does he Motivate Sehwag,SRT,RD,VVS,Zaheer to perform? Does he lead from the front with his brilliant batting as an inspirational leader and single-handedly win matches for India? Didn't he admit that he misread the pitch against Pak in Mohali SF T20 2007 which is often quoted to be a brilliant display of leadership by Dhoni but he did fail in the last 2 T20 WC's where we couldn't even reach the knockout stages. This is by no means trying to further knockdown a guy who is down on his luck lately but I fail to understand that if time comes when Dhoni's cricketing contribution is analysed and a desicion has to be taken,I wonder how much his captaincy skills will be brought up. I have seen Fleming,Cronje(despite the tarnished image) make some amazing desicions as leaders. Dada obviously is respected due to the fact that he took control during the crisis of early 2000's. Imran Khan controlled a bunch of unstable and contreversial individuals(applies to him too) and unproven youngsters whom he picked personally from obscurity. Kapil Dev in 1983 on a purple patch almost single-handedly inspired a wc win with both bat and ball. Mark Taylor and Steve Waugh were brilliant tacticians and fighters. I just want to know as what kind of legacy will Dhoni''s captaincy leave behind because afterall he is so far our most succesful captain.2nd on the list ofcourse is Dada whom a lot of icfer's make fun of and 3rd is unfortunately Azhar who proves that you don't have to be a brilliant tactician to be succesfull. So afterall is Dhoni benefiting from being at the right place at the right time?

Dhoni is a great captain and manager of people. He won the T20 on his debut with all youngsters. Won the world cup and kept his faith in people like Yuvraj when everyone was calling for both their heads. Presided over India's ascent to #1. Excellent in all 3 formats of the game as captain.

Dhoni definitely has some credentials that lot of captains in the world would only dream of. In ODIs especially lot of times he saved our ass in crucial times with his bat. He tries to do in tests. I think more than mental strength his batting skill that exposes him at test level in certain conditions. he was able to cover up his poor tactics with his batting. But Gauti / Viru /Sachin / Laxman/ Dravid saved him numerous times. Having said that we don't really have a good alternative I strongly think Gauti should not be burdened with captaincy. This is a very good test side he is facing. So preparation had to be spot on. It was anything but spot on.

That is something he is expected to do as a player...that might make him a very valuable player especially in ODI's but that necessarily doesn't make him a great captain I agree with not having a good alternative that's why I believe that Dhoni has benefited from being at the right place at the right time.Nothing extraordinary he brings in as a captain.He is definetely a valuble player in terms of LOI's.

Typical Case of " Allah Meherbaan Toh Gadha Pehelwaan " A good captain is a good performer to start with but what is the contribution of Dhoni to the team in Test Matches? Imran Khan , Ponting , Steve Waugh were exceptional performers in there department unlike Dhoni who has been enjoying praises on the back of other exceptional performers in the team.

Ok, so do u think being someone who has atleast 10 years lesser experience and still lead the likes of SRT,RD and VVS an easy job? I know these are all great guys but still it does take a lot of courage to lead a team of ex-captains specially when you are very much junior to them. Just to draw an analogy, I was once asked to lead a group of 2 people who were having 3-4 more experience in my field, and both were decent guys, but trust me they gave me a tough time. It is not easy to manage a group of such people. Even the great Rahul Dravid struggled in this. Apart from that, he has given most of the younger players a lot of leeway to perform. Every youngsters is gung ho in support of MSD. Sure he must be doing some things right And most importantnly you are undermining the importance of maintaining a calm around the team. This is no mean feat sir. Imagine the kind of reports that come out when a team is drubbed 4-0!! there would be names calling, rifts within the team. But our team is still maintaining a calmness about it. They have been insulted and wounded but they are not displaying cockiness.
