Have we tried them yet' date='Dhoni was a gamble which selectors took in 2007 which paid off,But now we have gambhir who has captained his state side and who is also good enough in all formats .After he gets in to form he should be made test captain atleast.[/quote'] no thanks.i have seen GG and viru captain and they are not very bright individuals.

All the captain u have mentioned have won world cups (Imran) or won away test series almost everywhere (Taylor) or both (Waugh and Lyold). They are considered great captains in the first place because they are successful. Taylor won away series in WI (the best team at that time) , SA Eng(Almost every Ashes) and the away series in Pakistan. He basically established Australia's domination in test cricket in terms of victory too by beating the then best team away from home.Steve Waugh won almost everything in cricket.Ponting is ridiculed because he had the greatest team in the history of cricket(arguably). So no surprise not many people rate him as good as Waugh or Tayor.Still most consider him a great captain. Again CLive Lyold is also another poor example because he too won nearly everything in cricket.Yes he might have united the West Indies but his legacy lies in the fact that he won 2 world cups and test series in every country. U basically took example of 2 captains who won test series in almost every country and is justifying why Ganguly greatness despite not winning any series away from sub continent for why success isnt a criteria for greatness.Doesnt make sense. The best example for Ganguly would be Allan Border who still many in Australia consider their greatest captain for setting the foundations for the dominance of Australia just like Ganguly did for India's most successful period in cricket even though Border had a world cup to show for it and Aussies dominated world cricket unlike us. Now i am not arguing who is the better captain btw Ganguly and Dhoni which u seem to be confusing with.I consider both as our 2 greatest captains along with Kapil. My point the losses doesnt change the great moments and victories we had under Dhoni or Ganguly for that matter.Thats why we consider them great captains. So despite the current losses the fact that he won the world cup we waited for 28 years is enough to consider his a great if not the greatest captain atleast for me.Oh and dont tell me its the team and nothing to do with Dhoni's captaincy that we won the world cup. If u watched India before Dhoni's captaincy u would know how we chocked in every final bar the natwest final in 2002.Its only under Dhoni we had self belief and started winning in finals. And we had at best 4th or 5th best attack and one of the worst fielding team in the world cup.So Dhoni's captaincy definitely played a big part. As i already said Dhoni is an average test captain but an exceptional ODI captain. But he is still overall one of our greatest captains along with Ganguly for what we have won under him not for what we have lost under him. Now i can pinpoint all the chokes we made in finals every time under Ganguly(World cup , Champions trophy , Last test in Sydney) and ridicule why he is not a great captain.Or i could point out how we never won a single test series away from sub continent to why Ganguly is not a great captain. But i wont because the achievements and strides we made under Ganguly considering the situation he took over (after the match fixing scandal ) are what that matters.Neither Ganguly nor Dhoni are faultless captains but what we have won or achieved under their captaincy wont be shaded by their poor results. Whatever happens from now Dhoni has done enough to consider one of our greatest if not the greatest captain.

He is ok but the other Options are minblowingly bad.
Isn't that what it seemed like even before the 2007 T20 WC? You never know one of these guys in the team although may not look like great captaincy material might just turn out to be really good. IIRC Ganguly had no credentials to be considered a captain in 2000. The rightful candidate at that time seemed Kumble (he had just won K'taka a Ranji Trophy recently) and not many understood the reasons for choosing Ganguly ahead of Kumble (one of the reasons could be the age old bias for batsmen against bowlers when it comes to captaincy). But boy did Ganguly turn out to be India's best captain ever or what?

India has no choice at the moment but stick with MSD despite his ordinary captaincy. The only possible candidate close to that role would have been Gauti but not sure if he will add anything now. As team we need to come out of defensive mind set specially when touring overseas...like I mentioned before, starting from Ganguly (bcos thats when we starting winning overseas) to Dravid to Dhoni we had a team with potential to win at least 8-10 more matches in last one decade than we actually did. Just a few to remind 4th Test AUS 2004,1st & 2nd test WI 2006 ,ENG 4th test 2007, WI 3rd test 2011, SA 3rd test 2011, NZ 3rd test 2010...you see the moment we reached last test of series we think we have already done enough (either won or lost )...lets close the shop and collect the pay check.

I think you guys are over-analyzing issues. When you lose like this, people tend to analyze everything. But it's important to keep perspective on what made this team tick. It's the batting, led by strong opening partnerships. If our batting holds together the rest will take care of itself, including Dhoni's captaincy. I am not making excuses for his defensive tactics, he's been doing this for a while (starting with the last test in SAF) - but this has come up now only because we are losing and losing big time. Yes, Dhoni's test captaincy has not been great. Yes, he has not attacked as much as we'd like him to. (There were a few dropped catches too in the 2nd innings @ MCG that stretched the lead further). But we still bowled out the Aussies twice at the MCG and 290 was gettable. Our openers failed and our batting overall failed, as simple as that. Regardless of what we harp on, this 's why we lost. How can a team carry a permanent passenger in #6, who cannot bat or bowl ? How can we build totals on poor starts ? How can we carry 2 out of form middle order batsmen every tour ? How long can we live with a poor tail ? And, oh, its easy to say, xyz screwed up! What is your solution ? Who will replace Dhoni as test captain ? Gambhir ? I thought some of you wanted him out one innings ago ? Or is it Sehwag who has not made any runs in Eng, SAF and Australia ? Just simply dumping the coach and captain after heavy losses is a typical padosee reaction. Doing so, has not gotten them very far. PS: If you go by our history, we have never been a dominant team. We were always imperfect. Our players make mistakes, tons of them. We used to win despite these issues. But everything going wrong collectively can only mean disaster and that's what we are going thru.

One bad series can be given to a captain ,Every one expected dhoni to learn from his mistakes commited in england,But when you do not learn from your mistakes it will bring you down as is hapening with dhoni,His calmness which was his strength now seems his weakness as he just seems not to care .

I was just observing that how perception changes with success or failure. I have never been a fan of Dhoni and always thought that Dhoni just happened to be team captain when we had a good team with a good number of players in very good form. He can never be credited with building up of a team like for example Border had done with Australia in late 80's and early 90's.

True he inherited a core group of players who were already there from ganguly era,But what he gave hope in his early days of captaincy was for a aggressive leader who backed his players and a shrewd tactician as he showed in his 8-1 fields against australia,But he took to criticizing players in press conferences ,Having different standards for his friends in the team and whom he did not like.

So why did we choke in every final under Ganguly and suddenly started winning almost every final under Dhoni with same set of players?

The same players a.k.a yuvraj were at the peak of their game in dhonis time,But dhoni also had a good allround side dhoni has had a few bowlers who can bowl 145+km/h ,Ganguly had only Zak who was sometimes 140+ and in world cup nehra was also 140+. Dhoni also has had a fair share of final losses and away from home we have disappointed recently in all icc tournaments including champions trophy and t20 world cup.

Yuvraj? Yuvi didnt make any decent contribution with the bat in any of our big final wins under DHoni in World cup or CB series or in World T20. And i wonder why u have skipped this point. We lost 11 consecutive Finals under Ganguly including horribly chocking in Champions trophy final and World cup final. Can u explain how a great captain can lose 11 consecutive finals. And Ganguly had Sachin in his prime unlike Dhoni.Yet he averaged an awful 25 under Ganguly in Finals.Whereas under Dhoni he averages 125 and before Ganguly became Captain Sachin averaged 58 in finals.Even a great player like Sachin performed horribly under Ganguly performing great before Ganguly and after Ganguly. So why does players always chocked in finals under Ganguly? Cant such a great captain like Ganguly even motivate players for finals? Also Ganguly had a far far superior team test team than Dhoni yet he didnt win a single series outside Sub continent.Ganguly had four all time greats (Sachin Dravid Laxman Kumble) all At their peak playing for him unlike Dhoni.Yet we didnt win a single series outside sub continent. How can a great captain captaining 4 all time greats not win a single series outside sub continent?.Or choke in 11 consecutive finals? P.S Can u please name the few 145 plus ODI bowlers we had under Dhoni for world cup or CB series final or World T20?

India also started winning since I have joined the company I currently work with, so I should also get some credit for India's good performances? If two events happened at same time, that doesn't mean that they necessarily have causal relationship. Same set of players performed well for a period of time and that time coincided with Dhoni being appointed captain of Indian team. I believe Dhoni would have worst captaincy record for tests played outside Subcontinent. We had almost same set of players available when we toured England last time under Dravid captaincy we won series 1-0. This time we toured with with Dhoni as captain we lost 0-4.
