Heading for a 0-4 loss and #3 ranking

The thread title embodies one of the real reasons for these debacles. We were getting hammered 4-0 and most were concerned about losing the no.1 ranking The obsession for meaningless ranking position created by media hype :banghead: If we cared about the future of the team and tried to blood youngsters earlier against weak opposition at home when had the opportunity we would have been in a far better position now.No we wont do that because it might affect our meaningless rankings position. Still there are those who want to continue with our seniors against Aus and Eng at home so that we can improve the rankings.

how is #1 test ranking a media hype? :hmmmm: on the eng tour: the team was selected, playing badly so what we needed to do? field youngsters half way i do agree with your point on the need to try youngsters against weak side. we did send a team like that to WI though before eng tour .... b/w eng and aus tours, there was no way we would not hv wanted our seniors to be not match ready for aus series. if we had 'rested' the seniors against wi at home and with these result in aus, most of us would be blaming you know what ....

So why didnt we try youngster in home series against Newzealand or the Bangladesh Series? Or the series against Australia or SA at home? We could have easily rotated the seniors including Sewhag and given youngsters a chance before going on a important year of test cricket in SA , Eng and Aus. But we never tried that because we feared losing or drawing tests which could affect our pointless rankings. How many fast bowlers we had given chance and were experienced enough before we went to SA.We were forced to try someone like Unadkat and RP singh because we never bothered about building decent reserves. How could someone as talented like Rohit could still be waiting for his debut.Because we never dare try to play youngsters unless seniors are injured. And this obsession with rankings one of the main reasons for that.

Because it was created by media.Did u ever see any fan in India bothering about becoming first in rankings before that Srilanka series.No it was always about winning series when it come to test cricket.DId u even remember anyone mention about rankings when we drew the test series in 2004? No Its now in the last 2 years everyone is getting obsessed with a ranking system which we dont even understand.

we hv tried possible replacements like Badri, Vijay, Pujara, Raina, .... agree that we should hv taken yadav and aaron for tests in eng in tests, teams play for #1 rankings. it's not obsession that's how teams are rated

And how many tests exactly did Badri or Pujara play? And have we ever rested our senior players (Sachin Dravid Laxman or Sehwag) in a single test in last four years to test bench strength? No Raina was only given chance because Ganguly retired.Not because we tried to built bench strength.There is a huge difference.

Eng would play its top squad in Ashes, no? there are ofc imp rivalaries but at the end of the day, all top sides want to be ranked #1 no point in benching seniors esp when many of them are test specialists or when they are in top form anyways, let's agree to disagree on the imp of #1 ranking

So what if they are in top form? Nothing wrong with rotating them and let them play a few Ranji matches. Building the bench strenght should have been the priority not helping seniors fill their career stats.

Fair enough.Because i will never going to be convinced to about these meaningless rankings. And frankly i still havent met any fans outside these forums and media programs who really care for these rankings in India than building bench strength and winning away series.
