Lurker Posted June 19, 2007 Posted June 19, 2007 By most accounts Shivaji seems to be a run-away hit. And since Rajnikanth is almost always compared in stature to Bachchan it is interesting to note that while Shivaji is a hit the Chopras's Jhoom Barabar Jhoom seems like a collosal flops. So it is perhaps fair to say, and I mean this in a lighter vein of course, that Rajni(box-office wise) is more bankable today than not only 1 Bacchan but actually both of them combined too(since they both appear in Jhoom Barabar Jhoom). But that is not why I have initiated this thread. I have started this to ask 3 questions that is bugging me right now. Q1) What is the role of Regional Cinema in India? Is it just an industry? or is it more? *** One thing I say that I greatly appreciate about Regional cinema is its close roots with the soil. I mean if you watch a Bengali movie there is a very good chance that the titles(or casting at the beginning) is in Bengali, same with Tamil Telugu or Malayalam movies. Now think of the last time you saw a Hindi movies with Hindi titles. Right you get the point. Q2) Why are Regional movies not dubbed in Indian languages? *** Hollywood movies have been translated into Hindi for a while now and now they are being dubbed in regional languages too. Spiderman III was dugged in 7 Indian languages with Bhojpuri version costing about 4 crores. So how come thus far a Thalapthy, a Tahader Katha etc have never been dubbed in Indian language? Q3) Are we correct about Indian movies mostly being "escapist" or are we taken away by SKC factor? *** I mean how fair is it to suggest a Rajnikanth movie has stupid stunts when half the Hollywood movies are like that?? Is it really humanly possible for a James Bond to do what he does? How "logical" were the stunts in Charlie's Angels or Mission Impossible? And how come the box office grossers are almost always movies like Lord of the Rings, Pirates of the Carribean, Harry Potter, ET, Star Wars etc etc. How "real" are they? Opinions? xxx
Cricketics Posted June 19, 2007 Posted June 19, 2007 Q1) What is the role of Regional Cinema in India? Is it just an industry? or is it more? there is no such role.. India is a vast country with many diff language.. most of the ppl prefer watching movies of their lang first, rather then other lang...its just to earn money thatz it.. Q2) Why are Regional movies not dubbed in Indian languages? some of them were, from what i remember the first ever dubbed movie i watched was "Roja" anyone remember that movie??.. it was a big hit in Delhi and other parts of India. also now days with Bolly producing tonz of movies every year, Hindi speaking public don't really bother watching other regional movies or ppl dont bother dubbing the movie as no other audience would watch it. perhaps i consider my self the worst person to answer such movie questions as i am not the biggest fan of movies on forum.. may be i am inspired of few ppl on this board who daily have a controversy on any latest thread in this general discussion section which made me post in this thread
Lurker Posted June 19, 2007 Author Posted June 19, 2007 some of them were, from what i remember the first ever dubbed movie i watched was "Roja" anyone remember that movie??.. it was a big hit in Delhi and other parts of India. also now days with Bolly producing tonz of movies every year, Hindi speaking public don't really bother watching other regional movies or ppl dont bother dubbing the movie as no other audience would watch it. Yes thats right. Roja was indeed a dubbed version, wonder how I forgot that. fantastic movie too. Sadly such instances are few and far between. It would be interesting to see how the Indian movie market would react had Shivaji been dubbed too. As things stands the movie is doing rather well in places like Mumbai and Delhi and if I had to make a guess I am quite sure everyone thats walking in the theatre to watch this movie is not really Tamil. xxx
gorah_pindu Posted June 19, 2007 Posted June 19, 2007 Im always saddened by the lack of integration between regional movie industries - its probably one of the greatest regional dividing factors, not to mention its just sad to think there are Indian movie fans who havent bothered seeing stuff like Apu Trilogy, or Kannathil Muthamittal, just because its in another language.
Lurker Posted June 19, 2007 Author Posted June 19, 2007 Im always saddened by the lack of integration between regional movie industries - its probably one of the greatest regional dividing factors' date=' not to mention its just sad to think there are Indian movie fans who havent bothered seeing stuff like Apu Trilogy, or Kannathil Muthamittal, just because its in another language.[/quote'] Absolutely! Every year we have this National Award for best movie. More often than not it is a regional movie that wins the award. If till date there have been 30 such regional films that have won the National award an average Indian fans, specially Hindi movie fans, would probably have seen none of it! Makes you wonder what is the need for the award then? It would be fantastic to see some great regional movies dubbed in Hindi. xxx
gorah_pindu Posted June 19, 2007 Posted June 19, 2007 I think so too, but this is what I fear will happen - regional production houses will carry on as seperate industries, and acquire foreign connections independently - creating an even bigger regional divide as different cinematic styles develop between different regions. I think that one day we could have the situation where say Bollywood is tied to Hollywood, and Tamil cinema is tied to Chinese production houses - and the two styles are so utterly different that they might as well be from different countries.
gator Posted June 19, 2007 Posted June 19, 2007 if anything, the integration will have to come from bollywood.... u cant expect some tamil or assamese director to remake parts or whole of the movie or dub his movie into hindi.... if tht was the case, he would have made his movie in hindi in the first place for a wider audience and more revenue... the initiative will have to come from the bolly-folks(producers)..... but how many of em have the time to scout around and find some gems and remake or translate them, when they are busy getting laid with young chicks....
Rajiv Posted June 20, 2007 Posted June 20, 2007 If not dubbed, the Hindi counterparts do make a copy of them But frankly, with regional films, you are limited in your audience. I can never understand the rajni stardom or even share the same enthu with a rajni fan coz I am in unfamiliar territory Secondly, it's normally difficult to rent or download a tamil dubbed movie coz you are normally used to watch hindi so what could be the big difference ( unless it's something heavily recommended, for eg., this Sivaji movie ) As for SKC factor, Indians are rubbed with "imported" factor since generations, movies are no different
Zap_Brannigan Posted June 20, 2007 Posted June 20, 2007 Should bollywood start making movies in English to get a even wider audience?Although, hindi movies generally has a huge following, Tamil movies too has a pretty good following around the world. Mostly in singapore, malaysia and sri lanka. Telugu always has a big following in US among NRIs. Besides, due to similarity in culture among Tamils and telugu ppl, most of the big tamil movies are dubbed in the language and any telegu hit is remade in tamil. Regarding hindi movies and tami/telugu movies, there is a huge culture gap and its not easy to try to capture both, though a few movies like roja, bombay, hindustani has done it before. Its just a phase now that the bollywood doesnt mix. Remember in 90s, we used a get a lot of monster movies but in this era its superheroes. Similarly bollywood embraced violence in the 90s (hence a lot of dubbed/remake movies) but this era its abt love/relationship(a genre most big budget tamil movies avoid). Maybe in a few years, more bollywood audience will go for the sober realism in malayalam movies.
Rajiv Posted June 20, 2007 Posted June 20, 2007 True, thats why mentioned the limited audience factor. Perhaps a South Director could make Hindi films on a regular basis. Why only tamil, Marathi and Bengal films too But I feel some movies and scripts are written from a regional angle originally, so the remake might not be as popular
Zap_Brannigan Posted June 20, 2007 Posted June 20, 2007 Sivaji ,just made the UK top 10....Got to be the most hyped movie of all time.
b555 Posted September 17, 2011 Posted September 17, 2011 yes zap brannigan i am agree with you' date=' sivaji is the best one, and i personally like,[/quote']
Yoda-esque Posted September 17, 2011 Posted September 17, 2011 Regional Cinema is definitely closer to its roots in terms of the local culture, subjects chosen, treatment and sensibility. Bengali,Malayalam and Marathi (recently) cinema :hatsoff: Tamil cinema is technically miles ahead of all other film industries in India and the music is something else ,though very good films are few and far between. Lets not call Sivaji and Robot films. They are called movies. Telugu film industry ,for all the money it has, produces crappy films.
Blue Panther Posted September 17, 2011 Posted September 17, 2011 Few tamil girls used to talk abt someone called vijay for hours with me when i was in college. My friends used to tease them because they actually looked better than those actors...Really, i dont know why they were accepted as heroes in tamil movies. The telugu actors are just ridiculous.. I think there is an actor called ravi theja...jeezzzz.....i just cudnt stop stop laughing when i saw a video of him in which he was dancing and romancing with a hot girl....I am not the one who believes in making fun of other's looks, hey, but come on they are actors and romancing with hot girls...fuuk....
