The Cricket Board (BCCI) is likely to retain the five-member selection committee thanks to Indian team's World Cup triumph, its ascend to the top of Test rankings and the consistent run in limited overs cricket. According to a Board official, the BCCI, it is believed, is satisfied with the selection committee's performance headed by chairman Krishnamachari Srikkanth. "The entire panel is likely to get an extension, probably for a year, when the board meets in August or September to decide their fate," a BCCI official told PTI on condition of anonymity. "The extension is being mulled in view of the Indian team's performances during the panel's tenure. They have won the World Cup after a gap of 28 years, maintained their number one status in Test cricket and are right up there in ODIs also," the official added. While it make sense to retain the panel after the team's glorious run, one of the selectors, when contacted refused to comment. "I do my job, and we are not supposed to comment under the code of conduct," the selector said. The five-man committee, which consists of Surendra Bhave (West Zone), Narendra Hirwani (Central) Yashpal Sharma (North) and Raja Venkat (East), is headed by former India captain Srikkanth. Two members -- Bhave and Hirwani-- are currently in the West Indies watching the Test series and are expected to be a part of the discussions via tele-conference along with Srikkanth, the other two selectors, skipper Mahendra Singh Dhoni and coach Duncan Fletcher for picking up the Test squad for the upcoming tour of England. Besides four Test matches, the Indian team will play five One-day Internationals and a lone Twenty20 match during the two-month tour.

Retired cricketers can now become selectors in the BCCI's senior selection committee five years post-retirement as opposed to ten years as was the case earlier, a source has told ESPNcricinfo. The decision taken at a BCCI Working Committee meeting on Monday means a wider pool of cricketers will be eligible to be part of the selection committee, which is appointed for a period of four years. India's performance in England, where they have been beaten comprehensively and trail the four-match Test series 0-3, was something the source said the BCCI was concerned about it, though there will not be any review of the tour till after it has been completed. ESPNcricinfo has learned that Anil Kumble, who attended the meeting as president of the Karnataka Cricket Association, strongly suggested the BCCI review the performance of the national side in England in a rational and clear-sighted manner, particularly when it came to issues of player burn-out and overuse. The quantity of cricket some of India's players have been involved in since the start of the year has been pointed to by several analysts and ex-players as a possible reason for India's dismal performance in England. There was also concern over the BCCI president Shashank Manohar having to appear before the Enforcement Directorate (ED), a division of the Finance Ministry, presumably in connection with alleged financial irregularities in relation to the IPL. Manohar appeared before the ED on August 10 for a meeting that reportedly lasted for a couple of hours, and the concern in the BCCI had to do with the board being subjected to scrutiny by the Indian government. In June this year, India's sports minister Ajay Maken proposed a bill that would bring all national sports federations, including the BCCI, under the purview of the country's Right to Information Act (RTI) to ensure greater transparency. "We will not allow them to be not answerable to the public," Maken was quoted as saying by DNA while speaking about the proposed bill. "Since the NSFs' plea of not coming under RTI has been rejected by the Supreme Court, we will have all NSFs including BCCI under the RTI Act." The Annual General Meeting of the BCCI has been scheduled for September 19.

"It would be decided at the AGM," was the terse reply from BCCI secretary and president-elect N Srinivasan. According BCCI constitution, the tenure for a national selector is for four years with a chance of extension at the end of the third year. Barring North Zone's Yashpal Sharma who has completed four years, West Zone's Surendra Bhave, East's Raja Venkat, Central's Narendra Hirwani along with Srikkanth were set get an extension after World Cup triumph. But hat-trick of humiliating Test defeats in England has raised a few questions about the future of this panel. Especially, both West Zone and East Zone are unhappy with the selectors representing their respective regions and want a change. Former Maharashtra batsman Bhave and Bengal southpaw Venkat are the two members who haven't played any international cricket are considered to be the two weaklinks in the panel. "Bhave is not firm enough to air his views. We, at the zone, feel a stronger man is needed to put forth the West players' credentials in the next committee," sources told PTI. Similarly, the East Zone members especially Cricket Association of Bengal (CAB) have never supported Venkat and there are reports they would also request BCCI to consider a replacement. Interestingly, CAB which is Venkat's state association didn't include him in the state selection panel for the last three years.

Will Kris Srikkanth pay for debacle? NEW DELHI: India's disastrous show in the Test series in England has cast a shadow over Kris Srikkanth's continuation as chairman of the national selection committee. According to sources in the Indian cricket board (BCCI), Srikkanth's tenure will be under the scanner when the board AGM takes place in Mumbai next month. The buzz is that some board members want former India allrounder Roger Binny to replace Srikkanth. However, the BCCI top brass isn't too keen on ousting Srikkanth immediately since teams put together by him have performed outstandingly well in the last three years, and World Cup success has also been attributed to the present bunch of selectors. This has strengthened the case for extending their service tenure by one year. The BCCI is a house divided when it comes to this contentious issue. Technically, Srikkanth's term as selector is over and if he stays for one more year, it will be an optional extension. Barring Yaspal Sharma, who has completed his fourth year as selector, the board is keen to give an extension to all the other members in the selection panel: Raja Venkat (east), Surinder Bhave (west) and Narender Hirwani (central). "One factor that's going against Srikkanth is his state, Tamil Nadu, which is also BCCI secretary-cum-president-elect N Srinivasan's state. Board members have reservations about a particular zone getting a lion's share of representation. The functioning of the board could become Tamil Nadu centric, which is not good for the game," a working committee member told TOI. Also, there is the accusation that Srikkanth used his offices to include his son Anirudha in the team for the Emerging Players' tournament. Selection committee believes his son has a decent domestic record in the shorter version of the game and that he was picked on merit. In the three Twenty20 matches that he played in the Emerging Trophy, Anirudha got off to decent starts and scored 81 runs with a top score of 45. "Whether Srikkanth will be continuing will be decided on the floor of the house and it's speculation now to say that he is not going to continue. He is the best person to remain as the chairman of the selection committee," a top official said. Ironically, when these selectors took over the reins three years ago, the Indian team was No. 5 in both the Test and ODI rankings. Srikkanth and Co ushered in a policy of rotating promising youngsters and often - like in the tri-series in Zimbabwe, the ODIs against New Zealand series at home and even in the West Indies tour - put the onus of responsibility on the younger crop as well. I really don't see selection issues with this team at all. They selected the best available talent. Fitness and IPL issues are not the problem of selectors. If physio and players say they a player is fit, they have to go with that. They picked Praveen Kumar for tests which was a great move. They brought Sree back as many expected. They kept Raina as he showed glimpses of brilliance in WI. They brought Yuvi back after he recovered, given his WC performance and potential to do well in a big test series instead of trying another newbie. Mukund did well for himself in WI and was a decent backup opening option. If Tendulkar, Gambhir, Laxman and Dhoni all decided to collectively lay egg after and egg innings after innings what the feck can the selectors do?

I really don't see selection issues with this team at all

1. Selection of Sehwag - Selectors took a big risk by naming him for the tour even when he was injured. We had only 2 openers for first two matches. Result - When Gambhir was injured, Dravid had to open. Whole batting line-up was in mess. VVS came at no 3 and collapse of tail which could have been avoided if he was playing at no 5 and Dravid at no 3. Zaheer Khan - He was not sent back after 1st test itself. Collective failure of selectors and physios. RP Singh - He didn't play any FC game for long and brainless selectors expected miracles from him. Sreesanth - He constantly gets a place in the team even when i) his performance is constantly going down for last few years, ii) he hasn't done anything good in FC matches. What can I say about spinners?
