Fortunately these days I have chosen the a la carte option on Tata Sky and have only one news channel in about 20-25 channels that I subscribe to. Ever since News X started giving more space to advertising they also fell down to the standards of the other channels so I reverted back to NDTV 247. On Sunday afternoon I turned to the News channel and they were showing something about the 9/11 crap. I duly changed the channel. Later in the evening and night I again go back to NDTV to get a quick idea of the news of the day. This time around the shameless fellows were showing the 9/11 ceremony fu

Before blaming the news channels, lets remember that they are selling what sells. The cheapness they show has a market and it has a market is big enough for all news channels to show the same crap. There is a demand for such programs. If people refused to see the crap they show, the TRPs would go down and the channels would be forced to show something better.

You know I can truly challenge this notion and disprove it with just one study. The TRPs may have something in them given a certain t,s,p,c. But if the argument is anything like the following: News channels give the kind of news that the public wants. I am afraid that is just not true. News channel just do not give us the news that we want. The fact is that we do not have a true choice. All channels show gossip and 9/11 melas so it doesn't matter which channel you watch. Bring in one channel that does not show these gossip crap and shows real, proper news and the market will speak. News X was like that and hence I switched over to News X for a couple of years. In the last six-seven months they have become as pathetic as IBN, Times Now, Headlines, NDTV, etc. Number of channels is not an indicator of choice. Content of coverage is an indicator of choice. Unfortunately in English News channels we have no choice. The theory that they show us what we want is bollocks and totally unfounded. Simplest test to understand the falsity of this theory is this: What would you rather watch - 9/11 Carnival or some news item that really matters to you? Remember, you are the public. Others also think like you. Others are not different from you in this aspect.

yep ' date='they show what sells. I preferred not to watch news channel that day .[/quote']They don't show what sells. Do a poll here and see even if within this community any of us actually like what they show. The more plausible explanation is - we watch them because there is no other news channel shows any proper relevant news that we want to see.

The best example of "news channels showing what sells" is the entire Anna Hazare "movement". Do you really thing that even a single one of these news channels actually cared for what was happening at Ramlila Maidan for so many days??? They were showing that stuff 24/7 simply because it was something that sells. In fact that "movement" got a large part of its momentum because of way too much media coverage. Some news channels like India TV and IBN7 were continuously showing those "Bhoot" and UFO related stories around 6-8 months back - do you think those were "relevant" stories or they were being shown because the channles were getting good TRPs from them?? The only sensible English news channel is NDTV but I've often noticed that its a bit partial to the Congress. TIMES NOW started off well but they have almost no good anchors and have the same panel of "experts" for almost all the issues and in cricket they have that irritating Boria Majumdar

There are exceptions to all rules. When I say, "You know I can truly challenge this notion and disprove it with just one study." you need to understand that the claim is not a 100-0 thingy but a significantly large enough thing that gives validity to the claim. What is a significantly large percentage? Definitely above 60% - anything between 40-60% is considered random, statistically. I would say it is 70-30 in English channels. 70% of the news is what the media gives us and probably 30% is what we truly want to see. Please understand that in India we like our cricket so if NDTV shows a cricket show it dunn mean it is catering to our needs alone. If it shows cricket 5 hrs a day then it becomes too much. All of us want to know what's happening in the cricket world but are we really interested to know which jeans Yuvraj is wearing and how he danced in Simi Garewal's show or what he thinks about the Lokpal Bill? The other day in an NDTV show Manishankar Aiyar said something to Swapan Das Gupta....now this happened in an NDTV show itself. Today it became a news item for 10 minutes with most ppl poked for an opinion saying 'it's a trivial thing'. The 10 minute news item was shown at least 4 times between 7 PM and 10 PM. Is this what people want to see? Is this what you want to see? is NDTV giving you the news you want to know about? You get my frame of reference?

The price Americans put on the lives of their own people is something India can learn from. So from that POV, I think it is not that useless for it be shown live in India.

Let's not even get into the details of the so called "price put on lives" by the American government. What was the great price put on lives by the amreekans during hurricane Katrina? The price of lives put by America is also dependent on those universal variables - t,s,p,c. All this bull sh!t about 9/11 etc is just a fu

9/11 is USA specific. There is so much coverage of US news in Indian channels, newspapers and websites, I don't ever see a need to read US newspapers/websites. I get both US and Indian news from these websites. Indian newschannels should worry about 13/7, 26/11, 25/12 or whatever.

You think India will ever build a memorial for our terror victims like the US has done at GZ or go swinging at the enemy who dared to hit it's soil? That's what I want our country and our govt to learn from the US' 9/11 episode. We don't have to blindly copy the US, but ensure that it's people are not forgotten and that anyone who dares to harm it will be given a fitting reply. Those are the two takeaways for me from the 9/11 episode. Ofc I am intentionally leaving out the bogus Iraq war out of the picture for obvious reasons.

I don't watch any news channel.. Not just content, I just hate their presentation skills too. I get my news-dose from internet....Even when there is some breaking news, I just watch for 10-15 minutes. If someone has money - this is the time to start a clean news channel.

Do you even understand what the topic of the thread is? We are not for one second debating the reaction of the American govt v/s that of Indian govt on terrorism. I am interested in knowing if the regular ICF fellow wants to watch news that shows some stupid fu

Majority of ICF'ers are NRI's
But Indian english news channels are aired for Indian consumption not for NRIs. Besides even if an NRI buys an Indian news channel, why would they want to watch the same 9/11 carnival even on an english news channel when they can watch it for free in their own country's news channels? Anyway, is the majority 51:49 or how exactly are the percentages distributed? Maybe that's for another thread

point is that ur poll is useless and wont get a clear picture on this site, what happens to 911 coverage in India is almost a recycle bin stuff here
