The Outsider Posted September 23, 2011 Posted September 23, 2011 The whole idea of time-travel - by breaching the speed of light - is based on the premise that we will be able to do it 'against the fundamental laws of nature' - one of them being speed of light through vacuum is constant and maximum possible. (I think) it is yet to be proven, scientifically, whether this breach is due to some natural phenomenon ( more common than we have known) or it is purely man-made not at all possible 'naturally'. Analogy - before it was discovered/established that earth was round, it was 'known' to be flat, or before it was discovered that sun is the center, earth was.... the discovery/proof which changed these long term held 'beliefs' did not mean that humans made the earth round, or replaced it by sun at the center of solar system - we just discovered some facts that were hidden from 'bare eyes'. So - all I am saying is - based on this news - pop-science would say that we are one step closer to time travel. But actual science has to do lot of work, before we can conclusively say whether its one step closer or to the left, or to the right.. or may be even back. WTF!! I have no way to prove it except for the fact that such experiments have been conducted for years at Fermilab and no one found a statistically significant result. (Something a lot of scientists have shed doubt on) But, it's a fact that your entire post that I quoted is hogwash because light hasn't been found to travel faster than light, but neutrinos have, if we accept the result.

But, that still is one of the many possibilities. there is a lot more to be found out. This could be just scratching surface of something even bigger - as you rightly said in OP - interesting times ahead.

You could have very well pointed out instead of your troll comment - but yes that is for you to choose. When I said - breaching the speed of light - I did not suggest making light travel faster than light. It was implicit ( as in context of popular time-travel theories) - that I am talking about transferring information/particle faster than speed of light. I thought people like you would have figured that out. anyway, I guess I said earlier - the result could be simply error, or some turning point...I would leave it to the people who are concerned with that.

How would you defend that in future there is absolute zero possibility that photons won't ever be able to be travel at similar speeds? As I understand neutrinos also have non-zero mass and once proven, their capabilities when travelling at faster than speed of light is something that will take time to understand.

Because QED (Quantum Electrodynamics) works at very precise levels As I understand neutrinos also have non-zero mass and once proven, their capabilities when travelling at faster than speed of light is something that will take time to understand. That's true, but we don't have much understanding of neutrinos anyway, so even if they do travel at speeds greater than light it will have very little impact on experimentally verifiable Physics, though things like the Standard model of Particle Physics will be thrown into a soup due to gauge normalization issues once you try to incorporate weak forces - that's my hand waving thought.

Isn't it one of the grey areas? what happened within few nano/femto or so seconds of big bang? Such astounding amount of matter was created and expanded within so small time window - that can not be the only weirdest thoughts/possibility. Anyway, that is just one possibility, another possibility can be - (assuming neutrinos were indeed traveling at such absurd speed) - the neutrinos entered wormholes created moments before by the collisions of other particles, thus actually traveling in time instead of going faster than the speed of light. btw - I like how you carefully ignored my first post on the thread: #11 Things go really weird at extremities - of many things it can be error in measurement/observation ....... ..... Also it should not be too difficult to understand - When one tries to defend something never-seen-before phenomenon, the very first crude thoughts start with typos, errors in expressions, absurd thoughts and so on....but guess most troll attempts ignore that.

Then with sufficiently advanced technology, any information can be made to travel at that speed. After that it is upto your imagination (and sufficiently advanced tech), what all you can convert to information packets, transfer it and re-materialize it at a time-space-coordinate where it is not supposed to exist/known yet. You are suggesting that there are some particular neutrinos that are traveling faster than the speed of light? And that they were somehow isolated and trapped while traveling faster than light across the universe and then shipped to a few labs where they were made to stand still for a brief moment at the starting line before shooting off and continuing their incredible journey through space and time. Neutrinos for such uses are birthed at the time of the experiment by colliding protons against a solid target. What we have here is the news that neutrinos, any odd neutrino, can be accelerated to travel faster than light if the results of the experiment are found to be valid.
