Ram (can be easily upgraded later too) - 4 GB 3. Graphics card - 256MB to 1 GB (good to have depending upon your need) 4. A good screen 5. A fast hdd like 7200 rpm or SSD (if offered) Other imp features: 1. Reasonably fast WiFi card - 'N" for example 2. Bluetooth, if required 3. Webcamera, if required 4. HDMI out (very convienent if you need to connect your laptop to TVs as it imports both video and audio) 5. USB 3.0, if offered The things below are more on personal taste and needs: 1. DVD RW or Blur ray or nothing (if you use the flash drive and/or download) 2. The size of the HDD, i.e. 128GB or 750 GB or .... 3. screen size: 13" or 17" 4. extended warranties 5. fast ports like firewire or thunderbolt So, if someone writes: I hv or want an i7, graphics card, fast hdd, high resolution anti glare screen, .... ----> it means something if someone writes: I hv or want: 17", 500 GB, windows 7, dvd rw, etc ----> you are not focusing on the right stuff .... in this case, you could just go to a big box store and pick something up I got the HP 6170US,is it ok?:nervous:

RAM is always good investment, but at all the times there is a optimal value vs price - for typical usage.. these days, it is about 6-8 GB...beyond that you end up paying premium price vs what you would actually gain in performance. HDD speed, there is not too much difference between 7200 RPM and one level below (5000 RPM)..but yes, Solid State Drives are significantly faster ...but come at a premium, and have limited lifetime ( as per current tech)...so, you better have a practical justification for the premium you end up paying Screen - extra pixels are always useful, specifically for s/w development and designers. Dedicated Graphics Card & memory - helps with Gaming and other graphics intensive s/w... here again, beyond current market 'norm' one ends up paying too much ... vs the actual gains... these days 512-1GB card is the 'norm', for 'high-end' configuration. HDD size - again, at all the times, there is a market norm.. these days its about 500 GB. beyond which you would pay too much premium, and below which u don't save much.
Laaloo Posted December 14, 2011 Posted December 14, 2011 When buying laptops, make sure what the Maximum Memory supported is. Right now 4gb would be fine. But to extend the life of the laptop, in the future make sure that you can put more RAM in it especially with 64 bit applications.
zen Posted December 14, 2011 Posted December 14, 2011 To add to what I wrote: the laptop LCD panels you can get in 6 bits and 8 bits (don't know if you get higher like in monitors), so that's another key factor to consider abt screens
