Bharat Ratna not for Sachin Tendulkar but for Dhyan Chand?

@Mariyam, What kind of social service Artists or filmmakers have done to get Bharat Ratna? If you argue on those lines, why should Bismilla Khan or Ravi shankar get Baharat Ratna? It literally means "Gem of India" , so any person who have done exceptionally well in his or her respective field that inspires people in positive way deserves to be called "gem of India.

So, if we assume that awarding Rajiv Gandhi was a mistake, we should perpetuate similar mistakes hence forth? PS: I think he was awarded for coming up with the NGREGA scheme.

Inspire those who watch them with their work ethic and contribution to the Nation's glory, which Cricket definitely does.

This is so cliched. 'Contribution to the nation's glory' ( cricket btw is played in a handful of nations) and 'work ethic' are as intangible benefits as they come. What concrete long lasting service have Tendulkar/Dravid/Laxman or whoever given the Indian nation? Something that will impact the life of your grand children.

They all impact different segments of the society in their own way. It is not meaningful to compare on person's contribution with another.

Exactly!! The shoe shine boy at Sion Circle is the most efficient shoe shine boy in the world. He's gone 100 days with 100 shoes shined in less than 100 minutes. He impacts a different section of the society and it is not meaningful to compare his contribution with cricketers or social reformers.

In my book they shouldn't. Period. They scope of the award was modified to add musicians and entertainers. It wasn't a part of the original Bharat Ratna, IIRC.

Exactly!!! And that is not what its supposed to be. In most democracies, awards are of 2 types- 1) Those which glorify individual excellence 2) Those which glorify contribution to the society We already have an Arjuna Award for being an exceptional sports person. Why award Bharat Ratna to a cricketer for exactly the same reason that you've given him the Khel/Arjun award for? Doesn't make any sense at all.

Even if I agree what you're saying, we have already modified the scope of Bharat Ratna long time ago when they decided to give the award to film makers, foreign nationals who have nothing to do with Indian society and artists. Now this award has ceased to be limited for contribution to the society, So it doesn't really make any sense to keep only sports personality our of this award.

SO? ANYONE can be trained quite quickly to "climb a mountain" but not anyone can be the best batsman alive consistently for 20 yrs' date= people have climbed mountains since but no one has emulated Tendulkar.

As much as I support for Vishay, SRT, Dhyanchand for Bharat Ratna - the bolded part is ridiculous...I should not need to explain, just search around. I am sure there has to tons of reading material - why scaling Everest (and esp first one to do so) is one of the most significant high points in history of mankind.

Sachin will have his chance. No one's disputing the fact that Sachin has contributed immensely to cricket. But, Dhyan Chand is the man it should *first* go to.
