He is being used as make-shift opener just because middle order is stacked, he has always played at no.3 so why make him open? When Mukund is equally successful.

Clarke Posted January 30, 2012 Posted January 30, 2012 Rahane & Gambhir should open with Sehwag in the middle order. The latter does not give a damn about hanging around and has indicated his reluctance to open as well.

rajmarie Posted January 30, 2012 Posted January 30, 2012 Will like to see atleast 5 new player from the last series playing XI. That means no Dravid, VVS, Sehwag, Sachin & Dhoni. Home series is where India needs to get new playing in the XI & let them grow in confidence before going abroad.

Mukund (as the replacement opener in case openers can't get runs) SRT (to "guide" the youngsters) Rahul Sharma (to play instead of a pacer on a helpful or uneven track) Dinesh Karthik (as extra middle order bat and a backup wk) 2 of Zak/Ishant/PK depending on who gets to play Kohli to be the vice captain and groomed for captaincy so that he can take over the job in a couple of year's time. In case Dhoni's form spirals even at home, Gambhir to be made the standby captain. Kohli needs to focus on cementing his place in the team before being burdened by captaincy.

Sehwag and Zaheer will be back on the samosas and biryanis as we speak and will be 2 stones heavier the time the next test comes round so they should be axed as well. This thread shows some people are going to find it hard to let go of some of these players, but for Indian test cricket to have a bright future it needs to be done. Even if the rookies struggle vs NZ and ENG at home this year it doesn't matter. They will gain solid experience and 2013 onwards will be the true time to judge them. Short term pain for long term gain.

Yadav Despite Gambhir's technical problems, unlike Sehwag he at least tried to fight it out. He got 2 very very good balls in Perth and Adelaide and he has a fighting quality about him. I think Kohli can take over the captaincy in about 3-4 years but let him establish himself as a no.3 batsman first. I think he has the potential to be a very good, aggressive No.3 batsman for India. I also think we need to start playing 5 bowlers now. We can't let teams get 500 against us and with 5 bowlers, Zaheer can bowl shorter spells. We can either have 2 quicks in Aaron and Yadav or another swing bowler in Praveen or even Irfan Pathan, depending on the conditions. Playing Ojha as the main spinner also allows Ashwin a bit more freedom.
