A lot of sentiments on public online forums are expressed due to herd mentality. Not every hate comment comes after objective thought and judgement. The guiding of the juniors needs to be done and is part and parcel of the game. Most veteran players would speak for it.

"Guiding" can't be done by players who don't deserve a spot in the team and are past their sell-by date. If guiding needed to be done it had to happen in the last 2 years when the seniors could nail down the spot in the team. Without any performances seniors will simply add to the pressure on the youngsters. For example if the seniors had pulled their weight in Aus, Kohli would have had a much easier transition to test cricket. We are extremely lucky that Kohli had the mental strength to not fall by the wayside, but we can't have the same scenario play out with other youngsters. If seniors have to "guide" the youngsters they can do so in domestic cricket where they will have no shortage of youngsters to pass on the tips to and they can "guide" all they want.

No guidance-widance needed. Most of the youngsters have played for India at some point of time. They know the basic structure and requirements. They can surely adjust. The seniors will only pass on their losing culture, the fear of the opposition by praising the opposition more than what they deserve, their lazy attitude and how to give excuses after defeat. As I said earlier, when you don't deserve to be in the team, you should not be in the team, as simple as that

You have too take take your hat off to manjrekar here, hes got the balls to say whats right, many ex players dont want too "offend" current players, but what he says makes perfect sense, sehwag himslef wants to be a middle order batsman, get new openers in,give them a chance ...let dravid n laxy go..give them one more test at home as way of saying thankyou and goodbye too indian cricket...we have to start now, also dhoni should be just odi captain, let him play without the responsibility, let him go back to his aggressive flambouyant self...its what us the fans demand and what we deserve.. all though were not number one team in the world were the NUMBER 1 fans!!! bcci ...remember that!!!!

The seniors are the one who had developed a doing-decently-overseas culture. Surely most are over the hill and will fade out now, but it is harsh when you call them 'losers'. And no contemporary junior has set the world on fire after arriving in international cricket. They have all struggled, and the moment they have come off well in a match or two, we regard them as the next saviours of India. They surely need tons of guidance. And if the juniors have half the firepower that these seniors had, they would have wonderful careers.

We also need to define who's a senior here, and why should all the blame go to the Big 3. If everyone has to go, Gambhir and Sehwag and half the bowling side should go as well. That will essentially mean that India plays with its A-team, which is nothing but a kneejerk reaction. b) Guiding in domestics and internationals are two entirely different ball games. The guidance part comes where people averaging 50+ in FC games struggle to get a fifty in an international Test or ODI series and can't figure out what went wrong. And of course in match situations. c) How do you know that Kohli is not gaining advice from the seniors and thereby making improvements in his game? The young player in a bad patch will look forward to gaining advice from a few seniors, and if there is no one around to help him out, he'll feel all the more miserable. The idea is to gradually phase out the seniors and not dump everyone as a kneejerk reaction. And since international players (like Manjrekar and Dhoni) are advocating the 'guidance' part, they surely have a good reason to speak for it. d) We can take a look at averages and performances and figure out who deserves to be in the team and who not.

He is probably the honest India commentator - media writed.Almost everyone has / had affiliations with BCCI and arent neutral. But i think most hate Manjaraker still for his Sachin comment (Elephant in the room) which is unfortunate.

But my view-point is, no matter if the seniors are in the team or not, if a player has talent and skills to survive the tests of international cricket, he will eventually succeed e.g. Virat Kohli. And secondly if a player is talented enough but still have one or two weaknesses here and there, he will surely fail despite the presence of seniors and eventually will be dropped e.g. Suresh Raina. I know seniors can still pass on their experience regarding the pitch, opposition bowlers or the conditions as well, but looking at the present picture, selectors will hardly give maximum 1 test series to both VVS and Dravid or even Sehwag. (Although I am not in favor of that too). So, 1 test series is not enough to make a difference in regards to sharing the experience. Secondly Sachin Tendulkar will be there till atleast Australia home series to guide the youngsters.

Are you saying replacing almost 40 year old over the hill batsmen who were part of 8-0 away thrashing (probably the worst away performance ever) is a knee jerk reaction? Bottom line is that players should be picked in the team based on their performance and not for "guiding". If their guiding role is so important make them asistant coach or something so they can guide the youngsters but do not pick players who don't deserve to be in the team for something other than what their role in the team is.

Who doesn't get hate on this forum??
:haha: That's well said  Fans are fickle and either fans love the players or absolutely hate them - there's no middle ground. I guess that's why they are called fanatics (fans in short) :--D

He gets a lot of stick here on ICF. But a great thank you to Manjrekar for uttering these obvious truths and giving some air time to us fans (@6:45). He says all the right things except when he wants to retain some senior players to guide youngsters which seems to be a lil contentious on ICF at this moment. http://www.espncricinfo.com/ci/content/current/video_audio/551570.html
The problem with Sanjay Manjrekar is thus: a) He has this tendency to pander to his audience. For the same reason that you like this snippet, for the exact same reason he ticks me off. Namely the fact that current fans are well versed with cricket? Really? If so how come test cricket is dieing in India? Secondly as Sanjay says that through Twitter etc he is more in touch with fans now, does that mean that for the longest time he was not in touch with fans? If so how does that look like? Experts who are completely out of touch with fans and sing hosanas about their favorite players?? How is that different from a regional selector who pitches his own zonal player and doesnt give a damn about cricket or fans? b) He wants a review but stops short of calling for folks to retire. He mentions the worst ever drubbing and then saves his behind by calling for he always wants Indian cricket to be reviewed. What does that mean? If this was Ian Chappell he would have said clearly Ponting needs to go. That being said, he is atleats lot more outspoken that Messers Gavaskar, Shastri, Bhogle and other cheerleaders.
