Sad news regarding Yuvraj!!

While the entire country hopes and prays for India cricket stalwart Yuvraj Singh's recovery, it is satisfying to hear from a reputed medical personality that the star cricketer is being treated by the best in business. Dr J G Lalmalani, considered one of India's leading urologists, said, "I have had some patients treated by Dr Lawrence Einhorn. The results of chemotherapy are excellent life long. The downside is the many side effects." "Finally the hair has gone," Yuvraj Singh posted on his Twitter page on Friday. Hair loss (alopecia) due to chemotherapy is one of the most distressing side effects of chemo treatments. Hair loss happens because the chemotherapy affects all cells in the body, not just the cancer cells. (See Pics) However, Dr Lalmalani said: "Usually the tumour starts from the testicles and spreads to the lymph nodes, lungs and needs removal of the testicle, chemotherapy and sometimes also surgery and radiation for the lymph nodes." "If this is part of the testicular cancer causing metastasis in the lungs, Dr Einhorn is the best guy," Dr Lalmalani added. It can be noted that on October 2, 1996, then aged 25, Lance Armstrong, the former American professional road racing cyclist, who won the Tour de France a record seven consecutive times, was diagnosed as having developed Stage Three testicular cancer (Embryonal carcinoma). The cancer spread to his lungs, abdomen and brain. Interestingly, Dr Lalmalani's few patients have been cured by Dr Einhorn, who was in the medical team that successfully treated Armstrong. Dr Einhorn has created a major program in clinical investigation and is credited with major advances in the curative treatment of this cancer, most notably in the clinical use of platinum-based chemotherapy. "The drug is called cisplatinum and is very effective," Dr Lalmalani confirmed.

Armstrong had an orchiectomy to remove his diseased testicle
Armstrong's testes (I guess only one), was removed, because for him it started as testicular cancer, which spread upto his brain later on. I would assume chemo can affect fertility, but why would it affect testes, if they are not cancer affected. Also, he saved his sperm in sperm bank, that he later used to conceive his future kids. From the reports/news so far, there is no mention of UV's testes being affected. His fertility might be affected due to chemo (my guess), but I do not see why his testes would be removed.

India's leading urologist should know that it's a primary mediastinal seminoma, not metastasis from the testes. You should always check the testes of course, but the odds are they'll be clear. And it's cisplatin, not cisplatinum. Looks like open season on Yuvi.

Dhondy ...Absolutely right. The 1st thing that the medical team does after knowing some one has cancer, is to find the primary tumor and check by CT scan if there is metastasis in the bone and all organs of the body. A scan called PET scan, is also used and it scans whole body simultaneously to find any spread. Thus the primary tumor is diagnosed. A treatment based on wrong diagnosis (in any disease ) will fail. This doctor seems to not know the primary tumor is Mediastinal seminoma. Also to those asking about hair loss etc Chemotherapy works by killing all continually dividing cells. Hair, White blood cells, etc. As cancer cells are abnormal they divide continually. The drug works by killing all these cells. Therefore hair etc will comeback.WBC, platelets etc will be checked using blood test and when they go low additional drugs like Grastim will be given to boost the immune system. Chemo works fairly well for several cancers. The root cause however, is not resolved. The cancer cells often mutate (not always) and come back stronger. There are cancers for which there is 100% cure, there are others for which there is no cure. Best thing to do is to diagnose and treat immediately. Go to specialists when any change occurs in the body. Some people are not lucky as their cancers may be inside the body and not outside, but most of the time the body will give signals like weight loss etc. cancer is not a death sentence and could be treated successfully, but not by Alt. medicine. I hope this explanation helps.
