bajrang Posted February 21, 2012 Posted February 21, 2012 That's not a good excuse for bowling half-trackers. As a fast bowler, or for any bowler, you get wkts when you pitch the ball up. Bouncers look good in hihlights but wkts generally fall to pitched up deliveries and Umesh didn't bowl very many of those in his 1st spell. . oh really !?! so guess how many indian batsmen lost their wickets to pitched up deliveries?? answer is ZERO, . 6 lost their wicket to shortish length , 2 to good length, and 2 to full toss. lol pitching up in gabba in oneday game, what a joke. u will have 400 on board before u will get 10 wickets.
express bowling Posted February 21, 2012 Posted February 21, 2012 I thinks Fans need to understand he is a fast bowler and as zaheer khan said he has been allowed freedom to go and bowl fast and look for wickets bowl bouncers and yorkers ' date='He is going to have off days but when he does he will run through a side. This is the job of a young strike bowler ,He will learn line and length with time.Anyways these are meningless odi games.[/quote'] I think fans need to understand that really good fast bowlers, even when they are new, do not bowl random deliveries without thinking or having a plan. What happens is, on certain off days, they are unable to execute their plan in their quest for added pace or lack of rhythm. That part is totally acceptable and is infact desired. Young quicks must have the added aggression and zeal. But the problem with Umesh and in fact most young Indian pacers, whatever their pace, is that they don't seem to have a plan to start with and just go through the motions without thinking anything. Ishant and a couple of others have revealed this at times. Getting hit in an ODI is no big deal. That can happen to the best of the best but the bowler must have some objective. That must be encouraged in Indian cricket. Erring in executing that objective in an attempt to bowl quick by a rookie is more than ok. If we watch other young quicks like Finn, Pattinson, Cummins, de Lange, Starc we will understand. They also often have off days and get hit for runs but genetrally seem to have some solid plan while bowling. Umesh should be played in every test match, given the new ball in helpful conditions, always encouraged to bowl as quick as he can but also have a plan, preferably a simple one. He should not go through the motions. If, he does this and on a bad day goes for 100 runs in 10 overs, I have no problem. Otherwise we will have another Ishant, who, after 40 odd tests still does not think about what he is bowling and remains a "rookie".
chainsmoker1985 Posted February 22, 2012 Author Posted February 22, 2012 ^^straight boundaries were short' date= he had to bowl shorter, so not to get driven. only other guy bowling at his speeds was malinga he too went for 7 runs an over. aussie had better control at short, back of length stuff. in india if u ball short it sits up and can be whacked so our bowlers are rarely good with short ball. Everyone's throat is tired of saying, pitch the ball up, pitch the ball up on Australian pitches. But, this guy has no effect at all. If atleast he'd have followed this concept of pitching the ball up and stick to it, he'd have been much more effective. You are talking about this game against SL where boundaries are short. In this game only, a just OK type bowler Kulasekara troubled Indian greats so much up the order with new ball, by just pitching the ball up. Forget about line and lengths. Forget about showing heroics in his first matches. Just show some thinking, a lil bit of planning behind bowling, if not more. Like Ian Chappell said in one of his comments when Umesh was hit to boundary off a slower ball, he said- Umesh bowled slower ball only bcoz he hadn't bowled it for a long time, not bcoz it was required.
rkt.india Posted February 22, 2012 Posted February 22, 2012 Yadav's speed was clocked by the same cameras which recorded speeds for Aussie pacers. I am simply saying Umesh is as fast as most of the Aussie pacers which is nothing special. It's not as if he's the only bowler who's 150+ and others are clocking 120s & 130s. As for swinging the ball at 150+ I didn't see that this series, and I guess even the opposing team's batsmen haven't seen it either and that's why h has been taken apart in every game he has played. In fact he has been hit around so much that he hasn't even completed his quota of overs in most (if any) of the games and in the previous game Raina and Kohli had to bowl 49th and 50th over respectively with "fast bowler with swing" watching from th boundary. At the moment Yadav is another Sami who only has speed but nothing much. He has no control and no consistency in his line & length, and is easy fodder for decent intl batsmen. Just to be clear his bowling figures of 50 odd in 7 or 8 overs in most ofthe games have been recorded on Aus pitches. Just imagine if Umesh had to bowl to the same batsmen in subcontinent. What are you talking about hit around. Watch matches first, yes he went for runs but batsmen has not him as authentically as they hit Vinay Kumar and Irfan. If you have watched his bowling he has given so many runs through slight deflections, edges, top edges over the keeper, through the slips, and misfield. I have not seen a single batsman who has been completely comfortable against him. He troubled most batsmen, though he has been unlucky to not get many wickets and he could not produce the wicket taking deliveries he produced in tests. He has pace that can be good for him and also can go against him as edges can carry for 6s but on his good day it could have been straight up in the air. and do not compare him to Sami. Sami used to bowl short and wide or half volley which he has not done.
express bowling Posted February 22, 2012 Posted February 22, 2012 Umesh cannot be compared to Sami. Sami was plain bad whereas Umesh has the raw material to be really good if he bowls to a plan. Umesh bowls many unplayable and wicket taking deliveries --- , a rarity with Sami.

Our domestic cricket takes a lot of time to make these guys learn these things. He gets too excited with his pace, goes all out, and loses his execution then.

bajrang Posted February 22, 2012 Posted February 22, 2012 here i something you may find interesting playing for nearly for 1.5 years, dale styen after 6 matches styen average 34.66 economy 3.96 strike rate 52.5 (he played all matches in south africa) yadav average 32.26 economy 4.46 strike rate 43.6 in ke liye toh agar dale styen bhi indian team aa jata toh inhone use bhi loser bolana tha.

If there is no possibility he would be sent to county then why talk about it. I know your point has weight that in county he can learn a lot but he is not going to be send there. Forget it.
asterix Posted February 22, 2012 Posted February 22, 2012 I hope the change in bowling Coach will do the job. All it needs is a professional coach. Not merry making, laughing all the way to the bank types of coach.

Aren't we talking about his recent ODI performances? And he just doesn't look like picking any wickets at all, not even one sometimes. The whole problem is yes he has pace but when he is bowling out there, he is bowling like a dumb bowler who have no thinking behind what he is going to deliver.

saneindian Posted February 22, 2012 Posted February 22, 2012 chainsmoker sahab, there's something called as learning curve. For some people that is quite steep, for others its a gradual process. Umsh falls in the latter category. Within 12-15 months, he has gone from being a 135-138 kmph bowler to a proper 145+ bowler. So lets see which all boxes does he tick Pace (145+)- check Fitness- check Runup & action- check Bowling long spells (stamina)- check Bowling sharp bouncers- check Bowling variations (slower balls etc)- check Now the areas where he needs to improve- Moving the ball- has the ability, needs to be consistent Bowling yorkers- so-so, needs refinement Spraying the ball- Needs to work the most on this one. Has a tendency to bowl on pads, needs a better control Hitting the good length more often- Again some work needed, bt he ha shown if he lands it on good length he is as dangerous as anyone else In summary, there is enough skill and talent there to work with . With some fine tuning and more experience, some of those inconsistencies in his bowling will go away and he will become a complete bowler. So why not look at the glass being half full than it being half empty. Peace!

saneindian Posted February 22, 2012 Posted February 22, 2012 Healthy debate by calling a rookie bowler as a loser?
NareshK Posted February 22, 2012 Posted February 22, 2012 To the best of my knowledge, James Pattinson doesnt play ODIs for Australia or at least regularly. If every bowler gets to bowl on batting tracks in ODIs where teams score 280+ then they will go for runs. Its upto the team management to play him only in conditions which will suit his style of bowling and not every game. Also he should always be used as a strike bowler. That is at the beginning of the innings or to break a partnership in the middle and not as a second change bowler or at the death. He is not a containing, wicket to wicket type bowler but he is a wicket taker as he showed in the tests.

Now don't tell me that I need to watch the game live in the stadium. 6 off Umesh over 3rd man was the only iffy shot in the previous game, everything else were "authentic" shots. He was taken apart by Dilshan and Jayawardene and his line & length were inconsistent. I don't how you can call him "troubling the batsmen" and unlucky when his last 3 bowling figures were 0-46 off 7, 1-58 off 8 and 0-50 or therabouts in 7 IIRC. And these figures were on Aus pitches where he can expect much more assistance than other places. Just imagine what would have happened if he had bowled on a typical Indian patta against the same batsmen! Yes, he has potential but he's way too raw and needs to start bowling a consistent line & length.
asterix Posted February 22, 2012 Posted February 22, 2012 The unlucky excuse doesn't works anymore..I saw how UY bowled in that match.. I can safely say that it was mostly without any plan or thinking. Just going throught the motions..I hope he's not become overconfident. I agree, he shouldn't play limited overs matches but for that I'll blame stupid selectors..

So what is the thrashing of Vinay for you. Yadav conceded at least 10-15 runs through edges and top edges through slips and gully areas take those 15 out. If captain had slip, Thiramanne could have been gone there at the start of his innings but it went for 4 instead. You need these kind of luck and edges going into the hand of slip or keeper, same thing happened against Australia when SRT was standing too fast behind at first slip and he could catch the edge from Forrest and it hit his shin. You need these kind of luck and catches to be taken to win matches, look at how David Hussey caught Kohli. It was not to be a catch if there was an SRT standing. This is the kind of luck I am talking about.

You talk about plans ,every team makes plans it all about execution ,somedays you cannot as its nature of game.Umesh is blessed with talent as he can bowl both the outswinger and inswinger ,so he has many deliveries in his arsenal with time and exp he will no when to use them .
