Critical of Mahendra Singh Dhoni's rotation policy, former Indian skipper Sourav Ganguly says time has come for the selectors to appoint different cricket captains for the three formats of game. "Time has come for the selectors to decide three captains for three formats. At the moment there is too much cricket, too many formats," Ganguly said. Ganguly also reacted sharply to Dhoni's recent comment that senior players such as Sachin Tendulkar and Virender Sehwag are being rotated to ensure good fielding standards. "You will never get a team where all the 11 are outstanding fielders. Even Australia don't have 11 outstanding fielders. Fielding is very very important but it is also about scoring runs in very very tough conditions", he told Headlines Today. "And I feel Dhoni has to balance that. He just can't jump and say these guys can't field so they are being rotated. If a guy who can field averages 15 on the tour, what sense does it make? We have to find a way to balance players and make a team," he reasoned. Ganguly said Dhoni also has to stop backing players for too long if they don't give results. "I agree that every captain will feel that this player is more talented than the other. That's going to happen in future again. The point is he is too stuck on someone for too long because of his mindset," he said. "I agree (Suresh) Raina has to go but the problem with Dhoni is that he is thinking too far ahead, the 2015 World Cup." "And I bet if Raina doesn't improve his technique then he is going to struggle in the 2015 World Cup in Australia. People are going to bounce him out. Nobody is going to pitch the ball up to him. The selectors will have to look at young players who can perform," he added.

I think ICF has been unequivocal about separating leadership of 3 formats for quite some time. Just keep away Dhoni from tests, and let him focus (and lead) ODIs and T20s. For the test, we need to pick someone who is truely passionate about and committed to test cricket - like Clarke. least bothered about IPL moniez... difficult to find such person, but not impossible...

I've been asking for different captains for different formats since long time back.. There should be rotation policy in Selectors too (every year and including the chief selector). You cannot allow one group to completly have full control and monopoly on team selections and playing XI selections..

As if with 3 different captains our batters will start handling the moving and short pitch balls better and suddenly our techniques will improve! Multi captain theory will not work in India with far too many ego clashes. Identify a leader of the group and appoint him the captain across all formats. back him to the hilt and if there are ego clashes in the dressing room, tackle such issues head on. As of now Gambhir is the only option we have to replace MSD. Sehwag with his cavalier attitude and horrible fitness doesn't look to be the leader of a national team.

Different captains and teams for different format is a solution for player injuries, picking up right players for right formats also enough time for planning execution in todays busy calendar.

I agree that we need to have a split captaincy but MSD remains my man for ODIs and T20s. honestly i think very few indians really care about T20I considering that we have IPL.. abt dhoni backing players, i think it is a step in the right direction but he has to do it consistently for all players... i still believe rohit and raina are good. its a matter of time before they iron out their flaws. else send both to county cricket or australia , SAF to hone their skills. i strongly feel these guyz have to be the fulcrum along with dhoni gambho and virat for next WC. honestly what is wrong in laying foundation for WC 2015 right now.. we never had the vision earlier nor will we have services of GOD for 2015. so we need to understand limitations and find 11 players who will collectively contribute. our superstar days are over. period !!! Sehwag needs to be kicked out and i want manoj tiwari to get at least 6 -8 ODIs at a stretch to play. Jadeja needs to go hit the gym and come back as a stronger player. if he cannot clear 80 yard boundaries what the hell is he doing as 7 down. if we are prepping for WC 2015 jadeja is not in scheme of things unless he ups hjis average to 40+ with strike rate above 80 . i fully support dhoni in whatever he is doing in ODIs as it helps to seperate the wheat from the chaff and the chaff so far are sehwag and jaddu.. rohit and raina could go the chaff route but one year in county can do them a world of good in improving technique.

Thinking good about team and having an eye for future is what Dhoni is trying to do and so many people are not able digest it. If any one has listened Dhoni's press conference, one won't doubt his intentions and that he is not trying to down any of the seniors guys, but these seniors must understand that team is head of them and not they. They would have played but they too have not done anything to win India matches apart from Gambhir that is why there is no harm i n giving youngsters more experience of these conditions. We had same debate in tests too when seniors underperformed. But we have always lived in past performances and on reputations and whenever someone tried to change it, people cannot take it sporty. Dhoni had said in his press conference that quite a few of the seniors included him and even Gambhir who all are 30 or above may not play in 2015 WC so it is better to give these youngsters every chance to play here because these are the guys who are going to play in 2015 WC, not the seniors.

maybe in indin conditions i will play him but playing him in australia .. i dont see the point in one match bowled just 1-2 overs and came to bat at 7 why not play some one like tiwary instead who just got a 100 and is in form and technically a good batsman ?

Tiwary being good technically is something that I would not agree to. Also, you can't drop a player syuddenly after he did so well in India. Agreed that Tiwary also scored a 100 but again, he's competing with the likes of Kohli and Sharma who would be given a go ahead. Jadeja is competing with Irfan and if good sense prevails, then Ifran would be prefered.
