The Redbacks won their third one-day domestic premiership, finishing tied with Tigers in a last-ball nail-biter but triumphing as the higher-ranked side to overcome a 25-year exile from the champions stage. SA - an undisputed dud in the all-white arena of Sheffield Shield cricket - turned on red-and-black magic to claim the state's first one-day silverware since it beat Tassie in the 1986-87 McDonald's Cup final. Until last night, no state side had waited longer for a competition victory. In amazing closing scenes, tailender James Faulkner needed a run to tie and two runs to win from the final ball from Gary Putland.He missed and non-striker Ricky Ponting - booed for removing his pads for the final ball - scrambled through for the tying bye. It wasn't enough. Needing just five to win with seven wickets in hand starting the final over, Bailey fell on the second ball, lbw on referral. Facing four to get from four runs, and with Ponting (75) stranded at the bowlers end, Faulkner dug out a yorker for a handy two. Faulkner played and missed the next two deliveries, leaving two to win and one to tie from the last ball. Defending an imposing 285, the Redbacks manufactured one of the most dramatic championship wins in front of 10,245 free-entry fans. Tasmania needed to score 5 of 6 balls with 7 wickets in hand. Bailey was on the crease with an unbeaten 100 and Punter was on 70+. Still could not win. :hehe:

But for all that he has done, he did choke very badly today :hehe: P.S. Why would you bring in Sachin in this discussion? 'Wedded to him', 'can't live without his memory' types? Did you actually watch the game? There's no way Ponting choked - Faulkner did. Faulkner is actually quite a good batter so it's strange he stuffed it up so badly.

That was the rule for the tournament and both sides knew it.

f.b.m Posted February 25, 2012 Posted February 25, 2012 He agreed to run two runs knowing that James Faulkner (basically a tailender, dont know why he came in at 6) will be on strike. If Ponting had settled for a single, it would have been three off two (or 3, dont remember exactly) with Ponting being on strike. I think that was a mistake on Ponting's part although not a terrible one to make.

I guess it violates the playing conditions. http://www.espncricinfo.com/australia/content/story/555198.html Ponting was scratchy early in his innings, miscuing several balls and having the good fortune to see some lob just wide of fielders. He was put down on 36 by the eventual hero for the Redbacks, Putland, who ran around at long-on and failed to clasp a chance from a slog-sweep off the bowling of Nathan Lyon. Ponting had another life on 58 when Tom Cooper at long-off ran in and couldn't complete a low catch, and Cooper had also put down Bailey on 6. The failures in the field looked like they would cost South Australia the title as the two batsmen stuck around and both cleared the boundary with slog-sweeps off the spinners in the final few overs.

People should keep in mind Ponting actually put this much effort for a domestic match where most of our players don't even play (barring IPL). Can anyone imagine any India cricketer putting this much effort for his domestic team in a domestic tourney (barring IPL coz motivation there's money and franchise paymasters).

Dravid is an exception. He takes domestic games very seriously. Infact he is more hyper when he plays for Karnataka.

Which in retrorspect is rather surprising and shocking. Only a decade or so earlier domestic cricket was still considered very important. This is how we got Sachin Tendulkars of our team. This is we got Dravids, Srinaths, Kumbles, Gangulys, Laxmans etc. Players grinded their behind and them became a name for selection, very different to today's model where you are already a famous name for some reason. Props to Ponting to go right back to domestic cricket and help his side. This is how I would love to see SRT, Dravid and co do too. That should beef our system really good. Although the part I dont quite get is removing pads. Hmmmmm

His own crowd ridiculed him. Not everyone buys the 'cheater professional' bullshit. Lost nonetheless, after dominating the batting throughout. Award for the super-choker of the match!
