There's too many idiots in their cool pickup trucks & other big tanks who drive these vehicles beyond what's advisable on the highways. the 'safer' rating is based on the ability of the vehicle to survive a front-on collision.. don't really think anyone tests vehicles for a whammy from the side. Well now we know what happens

Well now we know what happens They do tests vehicles for side on collision ,but lot of it depends on the vehicles with which it collides .

But right about the time it rams onto divider there was a large truck on the other side. I have had my own crashes. Worst running straight into a truck.

Alchemist Posted February 27, 2012 Posted February 27, 2012 The only way to drive on Icy roads is to go slow. Very slow if possible. (20 mph) Braking is of very less use once the roads turn Icy. A 4WD might give you better traction while driving but when it comes to stopping, you are no more safe than any other car. I am very cautious every time I drive in mountains in snowy conditions. Usually use chains to finish the commute.

Actually, automobiles are designed to 'crumble' like that to absorb the force of the impact. That is why you see Formula cars have their noses smashed to smithereens even when the collision was mild. The theory is that the 'crumbling' dissipates the energy away from the driver. But in this case, none of that would have helped. :(
cowboysfan Posted February 27, 2012 Posted February 27, 2012 very surprised that there are no dividers ... normally all over the world the 4 lanes Express highways have dividers to prevent cross over. nope,most highways in the US only have dividers in populated areas,once you leave that its just 4 lanes of highway.(this accident looks like it happened in Russia though)
