saneindian Posted March 10, 2012 Posted March 10, 2012 VVS, if he doesn't retire now, may find himself dropped from the test side when we play tests vs the Kiwis. Sachin, as Dada said, will have to decide himself as none of the selectors or the skipper will have the guts to tell him you are being dropped. The next time we play tests, the top 7 could be something like this - Sehwag, Gambhir, Pujara, Sachin, Kohli, Rohit, MSD with Rahane asthe reserve batsman.

I dont see Laxman dropped for NZ test series.
Pagalpanti Posted March 10, 2012 Posted March 10, 2012 Don't we have a test series with NZ before the Eng series? Laxman should be given a chance to play in that, if he fails there as well, he should retire or get axed if he chooses to continue. I wish Laxman had retired and Dravid should've continued till Eng series.
CG Posted March 10, 2012 Posted March 10, 2012 Dravid retirement has made it easy for laxman to continue.
ravishingravi Posted March 10, 2012 Posted March 10, 2012 I was never against them continuing. But there should have been atleast a plan to phase out the seniors over maybe 18 months or so. Tendulkar made his intentions very clear after the WC win. His decision to continue to play ODIs tells you that he will keep enjoying the game till he keeps wanting the records. I can't make any sense of the decision beyond that. Laxman has to go.

bajrang Posted March 10, 2012 Posted March 10, 2012 @starnewslive: Lakshman, Sachin also likely to announce retirement - BCCI Sources star news just tweeted this.
Number Posted March 10, 2012 Posted March 10, 2012 star news just tweeted this. They are saying Sachin from ODIs.
Andrew Peter Posted March 10, 2012 Posted March 10, 2012 Odis would be so boring and inconsequential without Sachin . I hope its a fake news .
chainsmoker1985 Posted March 10, 2012 Posted March 10, 2012 Odis would be so boring and inconsequential without Sachin . I hope its a fake news . No,it won't. I don't know why you saying this. India has been playing without Sachin 9 out of 10 matches in last 2 yrs in ODIs. And there has been no difference in the popularity or results of the game.
Ultimate_Game Posted March 10, 2012 Author Posted March 10, 2012 For me, Sachin is a once in a lifetime batsman in par with players like Bradman, Sobers so I do not want him to retire just because AajTak, Arnab Goswami, Ganguly, Kapil Dev, U_G, Outty, Lurker, Rett wants him to retire. He should retire ofcourse he will, everybody willl have to one day. Let him decide till he is playing good or deserving a place in team if not playing well throw him out of the team. But not retirement because 57% drawing room critic wants. SRT will likely get a year in Tests if Laxman retires or is dropped but you can't really see SRT playing intl cricket after more than a year at this point. He was great but as someone mentioned so were the likes of Kapil and Gavaskar but eventually everyone's time runs out. SRT has played at the top level for 23 years :omg: 23 years is closer to the average age of an Indian (IIRC it's 26) which basically means SRT has played intl cricket for nearly as long as majority of Indians have been around on the planet! IMO SRT doesn't have anything left to achieve or prove, and there's not much point in SRT continuing to play on as we don't tour away for the next couple of years. Scoring runs against kiwis at home won't do much for him but it would be an ideal platform for a youngster to be initiated at the top level. Again, just because some of us want younger players to be given a chance doesn't mean we "hate" SRT. It's just that in the longer run it would be beneficial for Indian cricket to give youngsters a chance at home for the next couple of years so that they have a much better chance when they travel abroad at the end of 2013.

This is some argument which looks good only on proper. Good players don't need to be initiated, shielded and groomed like that. Sachin (age of 16), Ganguly, Dravid, Kumble, Sehwag all started their test careers on tough away tours. Why new generation players should be given that extra luxury? If you don't doubt their capabilities as international players, there is no need of this grooming and if you doubt then why waste time on them by letting them play at home.
Ultimate_Game Posted March 10, 2012 Author Posted March 10, 2012 Seriously? Everything balances on how much he can prove? There is no other reason for playing the game? At 39 when he hasn't scored much for a year I can't find any reason for him to play cricket at intl level. If he wants to play for the love of the game he can very well play domestic cricket and IPL and maybe mentor domestic cricketers and youngsters while doing so. do you really think he was only playing cricket till now to prove something to people?? Well as my response above says if he's not playing at intl level despite not doing much for a year he can very well continue playing domestic cricket. Surely you can't expect an over the hill 39 year old to be granted a spot in national team by default forever. This is some argument which looks good only on proper. This is exactly the reason we have underachieved at intl level. Despite having plenty of resources and love for the game we have a pretty mediocre record and your post sums it up. We have managed to unearth the likes of SRT, Kumble, Dravid etc. by accident and not by design. This is similar to how WI had all thos great fast bowlers in 70s and 80s and assumed they will never run out of quality pacers. Guess what happened to WI who would love to get 2nd grade pacers from 80s in their team now. Similarly we can't assume Ganguly, SRT, Dravid will happen by default and would simply show up in Eng or Aus and score runs. To be successful consistently you have to manage the talent the right way as Aus have shown, and you can't take things for granted. Rohit Sharma, Rahane and Murali Vijay's handling has shown how broken our process is. Rohit despite being one of the best talents in the country hasn't been given a chance at Test level so far. Murali Vijay who was ideally suited for Tests was given a chance in shorter format just because selectors couldn't fit him into the Test team. Now selectors are making the same mistake with Rahane as well. It's clear to anyone who has seen Rahane bat that he (along with Pujara) would be ideally suited to Tests but selectors have played him in T20s and odis :omg: The reason coz they don't have the balls to drop seniors who are pushing 40 and Dravid's retirement has actually cleared up the logjam a bit and I'm hopeful Laxman would go soon followed by Tendulkar within a year's time. You may come across a Dravid or SRT occasionally by playing them straight away on tough tours but to be consistently good and to make the most of the resources you have, you need to ease the youngsters at the highest level else you will lose too many talented players and occasionally unearth a gem which may not be enough to sustain excellence as a team at the highest level.
